So far the patch seems to be working. Since I have vista, I never updated to 3.0. Does 3.19a fix the issue with enemy spies causing a CTD that was present in 2.02 (I think I have the right version)?
I forgot to mention that I am playing v 2.02 (I am unfortunately, I am stuck with Vista). See if that solves the run time errors. Otherwise, when the turn ends, the computer will move the AI controlled players until a CTD.

I keep getting the same CTD. Did anybody ever solve this issue? To me, it appears that some thing is missing in regard to the Tornado graphics (the German unique jet fighter graphic). Any help would be appreciated.

I saw that possible fix. I did disable the espionage option in a game that I am playing now. So far, only one CTD and I am past the medieval period.
