Classic (really old) computer strategy games

Panzer General, now over 20 years old. Very simple to learn, but very strategic. The only problem was finding actual people to play against if you got bored of the AI. The Settlers 2. Real time economy management at its finest. Plus it had a rather catchy soundtrack that I can still recall...

    International Relations Simulator

Call to Power II had something called the "World Peace Victory" where you would win the game if you were allied with every other civilization. Implementing something like this would be a small step in the direction you're looking for, it at least makes a "win by cooperation" possible.

A more relevant storyline for global issues today

These are great ideas, they take the game in the direction of feeling like you are in an actual world, not a gameboard.

    A cool idea.

How would this actually work? If a civilization got big enough would they be "promoted"?

Features from the past that made for a better game

It wasn't perfect, but I agree that stack death was preferable to the other systems that have been tried.

[CTP] How to get unprovoked attacks???

Did you install the update to version 1.2? I just reinstalled the game and started playing, the AI is not especially intelligent but they have definitely been going to war without much in the way of provocation. I noticed that the more powerful you get, the angrier the AI becomes.
