    Question About Carthage

It is properly pronounced 'Cart-Hage'. The name derives from Phoenecian 'Qart Hadash'. Furthermore, to my knowledge, there is no Latin word with a th that is pronounced the English way. Of course, most modern people pronounce it Car-thage anyway.

    Trade Routes 1770/1780

Thanks everyone for your efforts. Especially Birdjaguar, that's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks mate :) Now, what I'm also looking for is basically information about trade routes that went around Cape Horn, especially in the 18th and early 19th century... maps, text info, anything is...

    Trade Routes 1770/1780

Hey, does anybody here have/know of a map, preferably on the internet, that shows global trade routes around 1770/1780 somewhat accurately? I'm particularly interested in ones that would pass Cape Horn. Thanks :)

Why Didn't The Romans Invade Ireland?

Keep in mind that the true conquest of Britain began a century after Caesar's death... The presence of Roman artifacts -even architecture, and even Roman-styled forts- does not mean that the Romans were actually there. Roman objects have been found in non-Roman Germania, Scandinavia, even...

Does anyone actually LIVE in Greenland?

The majority of the Greenlanders are Inuit. According to the Fischer World Almanach 2003, 11,2% of the population was European in 2001. What I don't know is if these Europeans are descendants of the Viking settlers or of people who arrived later on. My guess is that it's a little bit of both.

Does anyone actually LIVE in Greenland?

It's not exclusively ice. Big parts of the coastal area are ice-free and have their share of vegetation in the summer. There's more than just fish to get there too. It may not be the most hospitable land out there, but it certainly allows some settling. There's also a pretty flourishing Inuit...

Funny or Weird names of places

That made me raise my eyebrow... There's a Batman in Turkey. I remember the most looked up city name in my school atlas was Vicksburg. "Wichsen" in German, pronounced the same way as "Vicks[en]", means "wanking". It was funny :D

    Do you like France ?

Personally, I have no understanding at all for the attitude of some individuals who dislike a whole country with 40+ million people because of what a handful of smelly people did long before these individuals were even born; nor do I have any sort of understanding for people who dislike other...

Was Alexander's Empire Greek or Macedonian?

IT HAPPENED AGAIN! Another person registered here and made only one post bumping this thread! CAN'T WE CLOSE THIS BLOODY THREAD? This is nothing but a nationalist flame thread from Greeks, Macedonians, Bulgarians and whoever else thinks he's got a right to talk about this. Please close this...
