Haven't "tested" this, but I've definitely seen AI Pantheon beliefs in my cities that converted to the AI religion. Specifically, Desert Faith, in a couple of games.
I will add, although it is irrelevant in this particular case, that you only have to step into friendly territory to get the initial embark "promotion." That includes friendly City-States and even Civ's you have Open Borders with.

Not sure if this is completely true. I created a GProphet in a Djenne city and sent it down to convert the Holy City of the now wiped out Spanish. I converted Madrid, then moved a few tiles to the puppet Barcelona. Thought I hit the spread button, but apparently hit the Holy Site button instead...
For the overall course of a game, I don't think the Mayans lose out on generating the GP you want, it just comes about in a different way.
The early extra faith you'll be getting from the shrine eventually can be used to buy, in the Industrial age on, the GP you missed out in the midgame...
Yep. It hasn't happened again since I posted, but both times I repeatedly tried Right-Clicking in multiple turns (since I kept thinking they were new pop-ups).
This has happened twice now since G&K.
Standard notification, "Edinburgh wants Sugar" for We Love the King Day appears. But the notification logo stays permanantly on the screen. Right-Click won't remove it.
It does vanish on a reload of the game however.
As a note, it affects your guys who are two tiles away BEFORE combat. I was trying the Mongols last night and had a general(Khan) right behind a horseman. Sent the Horseman a full 5 tiles away to attack an archer, and the odds still had the General Bonus displayed.
