    patch 109 now out

my verdict on the patch: what the hell did this fix?? there seems to be no to little noticable improvement with regards to the laggy/choppy/slow play. i still have to force 1.1 shaders and use low graphic settings and still end up dropping down to 2-3 fps by later game. and now the...

New official nVidia Forceware drivers (81.94)

yah, ditto. fx5200/512RAM no discernable improvement. but who can tell. the game is so squirrly. sometimes, late game slows to 1-2 fps, but then can rebound back up to 15fps. how or why? who knows!

    A couple of problems

yes, if the forum search is working, check out "chesire cat" and/or "black terrain". you're not the first or only person to have this issue. unfortunately you're not going to like the solution. check out the "T & L" sticky on this page. this seems to be a standard problem that is hardware...

massive hard drive access even though the game is not installed there

sorry for not really offering any help. but i can tell you anecdotally that i notice this game chewing up my HD pretty hard. after running/quitting the game, everything is slow to respond. i remember years ago when i got alpha cent, that game did similar things to my computer then. so...

    Stupid Civ Tricks

heh, interesting observation. i notice the same thing. egypt often (usually) universally despised. maybe that's what we have in common. i also notice that some agg nations have serious anger issues. they'll continue to come at you regardless of their relative strength. that is, i remember...

    Replacement Graphics Card

    best advice of all.

New official nVidia Forceware drivers (81.94)

there's no mention of civ iv in the release notes, but... they do mention similar 'stuttering issues' and refer people back to 77.72. OR...there are rendering issues with other games that they say will be fixed in next release. i guess if they don't specifically address civ issues, these...

    512mb of RAM isn't enough.....

again....stop perpetrating this on other people, there is simply too much conflicting evidence to say memory alone is the problem. plenty of people with tons of mem have slow games, others with 256mb are running fine. don't spend $$ on mem (or worse, a new vid card) until more is known.

    This game is unbearably slow

stop saying this. there are plenty of anecdotes out there from people who have LOTS of mem and can't play, and similar stories of people with 256mb who are playing just fine. while RAM might very well be the problem for some folks, there seems to be no real way of knowing. i have 512mb...

I think most of you misunderstand something

yah, i'm using fx5200 (512RAM/Pent IV 2.8) and my fps varies wildly, and randomly. though, generally speaking, the larger the map the slower the fps, but i have been able play on standard maps (sometimes, ok, once...yesterday) for hours with 15-20! which seemed incredible to me since i HAD been...

    Great news! Patch in development!

hmm... but that's the thing...the problems exist on such a wide variety of configs that how could they NOT have run across it. you don't believe all the developers, at all the companies involved, use exactly the same machines with the same specs??? you know that's simply not the case...

my 2 cents on fixing some problems

you do. go through something like this: 'my comp'/'hard drive'/'docs & settings'/'user (you)'/'application data' (this is hidden, you have to show hidden folders)/'my games'/'civ iv'/'cache'

Leader Contact Screens cause many problems

i know this doesn't refer to leaderheads (though i notice the same thing)... but i also noticed recently another odd problem-causer: the damn swaying trees. this was posted by soemone else earlier and i thought "that's a joke". but just from OBSERVATION, i see that when i'm over ocean tiles...

1GB RAM for Standard, 2GB RAM for Huge recommended memory!

thanks, limp. if this is the case, it answers my question regarding whether or not a patch can even fix the problem. i'm guessing it can, but whether or not they WILL fix it...or soon...is speculative.

nVidia - Fix for Crash to Desktop possibly found

yah, and the point (previous poster?) about larger maps/more civs = slow gameplay is true...with respect to the TURN TIME. but i think what you, me, and many others are referring to is the choppy video that comes with bigger maps. and if you get to that point where you're machine seems to...
