I had a fairly similar situation on my last game (Emperor, Standard Map, Darius). I went for and won a tech victory and had RAs with all players throughout the game. This was possible even in the late game as all civs stayed friendly with me for some reason.
Obviously RAs took up most of my...
This might be random rather than programmed but in my games I've noticed that Catherine has a higher than average chance of starting all alone on an island on continents maps. Anyone else had this experience?
As for starting in the tundra, while it can feel crappy, there are advantages. Not...
Choosing liberty after National College can be very powerful in some circumstances. In my last game (Emperor) I found myself as the only civ on a medium sized continent. After beelining the NC I used liberty to pump out settlers every 4 turns and had soon covered the whole continent. Meanwile...
Hi there Ironic Lettuce, hope that you find this advice from an Emperor/Immortal-level player helpful:
Regarding Farms vs Trading Posts
You should generally build farms next to rivers and trading posts/ elsewhere. This is because riverside farms give 4 f (with civil service) a LOT sooner...
* Tangent Alert*
Monthar, if you're playing as Persia then make sure you time your golden ages properly. You want to have it start at the same time you declare war to benefit from the extra movement (3 move catapults!) and combat. Trading luxuries and leaving coliseums half built will help...
Most of the advice here already does the job, especially regarding technical superiority. But here are some other techniques that might be useful:
Build roads right up to the enemy's borders so that you can quickly advance and retreat. Consider even having a temporary extra road or 2 around...
One important thing to note is that settlers can be bought whereas the National College cannot. A technique that results from this is to research mining or calender after writing, then develop and sell a luxury resource* to buy a settler** while the library and National College are building...
This is an interesting idea but I think it might make Great Artists too powerful.
What I'd like to see is an increase in the amount of culture their terrain improvement (monument?) makes. At the moment I think it's only 4 culture which is less than an Opera House gives. I know there's no...
If you set workers to automated then they nearly always go to improve resources first. Of course, you shouldn't really use this setting at other times because the it is inefficient and won't fit your stratgery.
Some people on the forum think that a rich AI will sign a RA with you so to deplete your treasury before they declare war on you. I've never noticed this effect and am not sure if the programmers were that clever, but thought I'd spread the rumour about anyway.
Don't forget the Camel Archer rush. I know that they have less movement than Keshiks but Arabia can be a strong and rich Civ if managed well.
For instance, on King level after I got the NC, I beelined currency and could sell multiple luxuries with the bazaar. This funded both RAs to get...
I also find it tricky to get the National College that quickly. Here are some things I've found that might help you to do this (some of them are down to chance):
Have a mined luxury resource in your starting area. Use the worker to develop it, then sell to AI for 300 gold and buy a...
Am I alone in being frustrated with the automated explore button for ships? Whenever I press it my ships will decide to explore the polar regions rather than looking for new continents. What's worse is that they seem to get stuck there; I did a test last game and even after 60 turns on a...
I loan weaker civs (especially on other continents) money so that they have enough to pay for a research agreement. This not only gives you more science but provides a boost to them which reduces the chance that they'll be swallowed up by Alexander or some other warmongering AI. Keeping as...
