Are you serious? That's gotta be awfully bad luck. I usually have at least 2 horses within 10 hexes of the starting location, often 6 (usually a 4 one and a 2 one). That's very strange. I always play standard though, so maybe it is the small map thing. You sure you dont have your advanced...
That only reduces the load time for me, not the AI's turns.
I also turn off city states and plan to levae them off due to how overpowered maritime ones are.
What difficulty, what map type?
Generally I wouldnt bother with them unless I needed to fast buy some defensive units quick because I got attacked with my pants down, or if I had bismarck as a neighbor I would consider rushing him with everything I had to stop the inevitable pike parade.

I usually mostly hold puppet empires in deity/immortal, so rationalism seems to be a better policy tree. Sometimes I even purposely go into -5 ot lower happiness so my puppets all send their workes to the trading posts.
Ya right, and Iraq has been such an archeology friendly state in the last 100 years they have excavted all over the place! rofl
I think china stopped digging when they started digging up red headed white people in ancient china.
Anyway getting back to the OP. That voice over in the game...

the computer does not "hide in the trees" for any sort of tactical advantage. It's pretty rare to even see trees anywhere near cities after turn 100 or so, cause the computer usually chops them all on the higher difficulties. The trees are usually on the outskirts of their territory. Your logic...
