    Blacks outside Africa

Aboriginal Australians are not the only people in the world to have a taboo about depicting or naming the dead. For instance, most cultures in the northern regions of both Old and New World have taboos against naming the dead until the name has been passed on to a descendent. (When watching...

Merging Camps, City States, and Civs

I have mixed feelings. In principle I like your idea (with the adjustment of merging Barbarians and City-states into Minor Civilizations), but I also feel like a game where I have to fight for every inch of expansion is a game where I'm going to play a permanent one-city challenge...which I...

Medieval Ireland or Classical Gaul, though they butchered Gaul in NFP.

I'd be pretty excited by an Icelandic civ TBH, but it's hard to make a strong argument for it against just going with Norway again. The Kingdom of the Isles at least has the Norse-Gaelic thing going for it. Too little known about them. We know very little of their language (though it was...

Irony 1: Robert the Bruce speaking Middle English is historic, though they could have had him speaking Norman. Irony 2: TBH I fully expected them to have him anachronistically speaking Gaelic. (If we ever get a Scottish civ again, I would strongly prefer they base it on the Kingdom of the...

I wasn't using that as a counterargument against including Italy; I was pointing to it as another example that Italy has been represented in the game. (And yes, you're right I forgot about Venice.) That's, uh, one way of putting it. Probably not the way the Byzantines would have put it. :p

Scotland was poorly designed, but I don't object to the idea of a Scottish civ--even if it loses out in pretty much every respect to an Irish civ. TBH I would be a little surprised if barbarians return in their current form in Civ7; Barbarian Clans was the first step in acknowledging that their...

Also as city-states (Bologna and Vatican City in Civ6; Florence, Milan, Genoa, and Vatican City in Civ5.).

There is no archaeological evidence that Iroquoian peoples even lived in the Great Lakes region until about a century after 1142. There is also good historical evidence that the Iroquois Confederacy was founded after the Huron Confederacy (which was formed in the 15th century). Also your claim...

No. Of all the unnecessary civs added to the game, Australia is the worst offender. I will take Canada led by Celine Dion with a Beaver Mountie UU and a Tim Horton's UB before I accept Australia back. :p Australia is already in the game: it's part of the English civilization. For the TSL...

Ukrainian civilisation (mainly based on Cossacks)

Italy's pretty near the bottom of my European civ wishlist, but I also disagree with virtually all of the arguments against it being presented here. Well, they kind of did. Americans had very local identities until a new American identity was forged--consciously and ad hoc--during the...

Not entirely correct. We don't know for sure when the League was founded, with most estimates somewhere between 1400 and 1600, but increasingly scholarship points to the creation of the League as a direct response to encounters with the French in the 16th century. True for Phoenicia--at least...

So if the even numbered Civs are the better ones, your expectations for 7

I mean, you're certainly entitled to like Civ5, but I'd definitely say you're in the minority there. IMO Civ5 is by a long shot the weakest game of the franchise with the possible exception of Civ3 so OP's theory holds for me so far.

All post-Columbian Native Americans were affected by American expansion. However, not all were equally written into Manifest Destiny narratives like the Frontier thesis. Also to be clear I'm not saying that a Native American civ or leader should be excluded because of how they've been presented...
