It's just buggy. If you have it on discs, download and install the patch (that can be found on the Firaxis site) manually. If you bought it from a system like D2D or Steam, you'll likely have to get an update specific to that system.

It's due to a combination of vertical research paths, tech trading, increasingly expensive techs and cheaper research for techs already discovered by other civs. All of these things often result in a constant or closing, rather than widening, difference in tech level.

My question is why, when you have no oil, are you complaining about your military while researching medicine, instead of say, researching fission so you can make use of your uranium for battleships, or researching plastics to get standard ethanol? Also, why did you research flight when you knew...

So it's an issue of when the game finally gets around to saying 'hey, these things are connected'? So both cities and forts allow coastal connections, but cities trigger the game to update it's map of connections, whereas forts don't?

In BTS, forts do provide coastal trade routes, but maybe not when they're within a city's radius and on the same landmass?

Use a fort.

Is it the 18 civs earth map? If so, England can squeeze in 7 cities on the islands it has pre-astronomy access to. 4 in England. 2 in Ireland and 1 in Iceland.

If he's referring to the screenshot of the city at the end of the game, it's because they're all stacked into one icon when you have more than would fit in visibly.
