City Planning Mode 2016-10-05

A simple UI modification that should be useful in planning where to found cities. Compatible with Enhanced User Interface.

Discussion thread here.

Update(s)

2016-04-04: Now it's compatible with Enhanced User Interface. If you use the old version, delete the CityPlanningMode folder before using the new one. It uses a different folder name, which is important because it should be alphabetically after the EUI folder (UI_bc1).

Installation

Due to the peculiarities of Civ5 modding (see here), this package can't take the form of a traditional mod. Instead, it's a "pseudo-DLC".

To install, you need to unpack it in your DLC folder. For PC, it's [Your Steam Install Location]\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\assets\DLC. The installation procedure is the same as with Enhanced User Interface, so for more detailed information, refer to the instructions here (instead of the UI_bc1 folder, use the xCityPlanningMode folder, also there is no XML file to put in the Text folder).

To uninstall, you need to remove the xCityPlanningMode folder from the DLC folder. AFAIK there is no way to disable it without removing.

Usage

Press the X key to enable/disable the city planning mode. While enabled, the maximum working range of cities (3 hexes around each city, unless you use a modded DLL that changes this) is displayed as colored hexes:
  • yellow - your cities
  • red - cities of other civs
  • blue - city states
Hexes belonging to multiple categories have colors that are a mix of the above.

When you mouse over a hex where a city can be founded, the limits of that potential city are displayed as a white border. When you mouse over an existing city, its limits are displayed as a border in appropriate color, and its hexes are not colored (so any colored hexes within the border are overlapping from other cities).

The colored hexes are updated when founding or capturing a city, and at the start of every turn (to account for cities that are razed or traded in diplomacy). So when you trade cities with the AI, the colors probably won't be immediately updated, but you can update them by disabling and enabling the mode (pressing X twice).
