Civ of the Week: The Hyksos (Vanilla and Warlords) 2016-10-05

THIS WEEK'S CIV IS:

THE HYKSOS

What is Civ of the Week?

Civ of the Week is a “project” aiming at bringing you a new, fresh, exotic, and most of all, random, civ every 1-2 weeks, from all corners of the globe, from the Vietnamese to the Mittanni to the Iraqis.
Each civilization will be available in vanilla and warlords, and will feature full civilopedia text entires, 1-2 leaders, a UU, a UB, audio, and full graphics.

Because of the quick speed at which the civs are produced, they may not be as high quality as other well-planned custom civs, but hopefully, the civs will be playable.

The purpose of Civ of the Week, then, is two-fold:

1. To bring you random civs that would probably not have been chosen as civilizations first of all, and to provide a new, more exotic, more interesting experience in choosing civilizations.

2. To promote more knowledge of lesser-known peoples, cultures, and histories.

Otherwise, then, enjoy! The thread for Civ of the Week is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=5490559#post5490559

Name: Hyksos Empire

Description: Not much is known about the Hyksos, but sometime during the Second Intermediate Period of Ancient Egyptian history (c. 1800 BCE – c. 1500 BCE), the Egyptians spoke of the “Heka Khasewet”, translated as “Rulers of Foreign Lands”. They were an important part of Egyptian military history, as they introduced many military innovations such as the chariot.
Though traditional scholarly thinking states that the Hyksos were Asiatic invaders of Egypt, of Semitic or even Indo-Aryan origin, because of the obscurity of the era, it is not known whether they were actual invaders, simply migrating tribes, Egyptian rulers themselves who eventually became hated, or even Hebrew Pharaohs.
However, it is known that they established two dynasties in Egypt, known as the Fifteenth and Sixteenth dynasties, though the Fifteenth dynasty was more dominant, and ruled much of the Nile Delta, the Sinai, parts of Palestine, and much of central Egypt. They destroyed the old thirteenth dynasty of Egypt, as well as its successor, the fourteenth dynasty; however, in the south, centered around Waset (also known as Thebes), the seventeenth dynasty arose, and it was this dynasty that kept Egyptian independence alive.

Finally, around the reign of Sequenre Tao II of the Seventeenth dynasty, the Egyptians began a counterattack against the Hyksos. Sequenre Tao II died, probably in battle, and was succeeded by his son, Kamose. Kamose was much more successful than his father, nearly destroying the Hyksos dynasty. However, he died somehow, and was succeeded by his brother (sometimes considered his son) Ahmose. It was Ahmose who finally drove the Hyksos kings out of Egypt, securing Egyptian independence.

The Hyksos retreated to a desert fortress-city in the Sinai, called Sharuhen, and they finally fell after a three-year siege. After this, it is not certain exactly where they went, but it is probable that they fled into the Levant.
