Civ of the Week: The Mughals 2016-10-05

THIS WEEKS CIV:

The MUGHALS

What is Civ of the Week?

Civ of the Week is a “project” aiming at bringing you a new, fresh, exotic, and most of all, random, civ every 1-2 weeks, from all corners of the globe, from the Vietnamese to the Mittanni to the Iraqis.
Each civilization will be available in vanilla and warlords, and will feature full civilopedia text entires, 1-2 leaders, a UU, a UB, audio, and full graphics.

Because of the quick speed at which the civs are produced, they may not be as high quality as other well-planned custom civs, but hopefully, the civs will be playable at a decently enjoyable level.

The purpose of Civ of the Week, then, is two-fold:

1. To bring you random civs that would probably not have been chosen as civilizations first of all, and to provide a new, more exotic, more interesting experience in choosing civilizations.

2. To promote more knowledge of lesser-known peoples, cultures, and histories.

Otherwise, then, enjoy!

This week’s civ is:

THE MUGHALS

Name: Mughal Empire

Description: The Mughals were arguably one of the greatest rulers of India. Originating from Central Asia, they were led by Babur, who claimed descent from the famous conqueror Tamerlame, and the even more famous conqueror Genghis Khan. Sweeping down into India, he conquered a sizable amount of territory in the north, and founding the Mughal Empire in 1526.
However, within a generation of his death, his successors were driven out by the native Indians. The Indian’s victory was short lived, as Akbar, Babur’s grandson, defeated them soon after. A great ruler, Akbar ruled as an enlightened despot; though he was a Muslim, he permitted Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and various other religious peoples to discuss faith at his court; under his rule, trade, commerce, and the domestic sector of India flourished.
His good rule was continued for a few generations. Under Akbar’s grandson, Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal was built, a monument to Shah Jahan’s wife. Shah Jahan was ousted by his son, Aurangzeb, who became known as the “greatest” Mughal Emperor. Intolerant like his predecessors, he prosecuted Hindus especially, and set about on grand conquests, bringing nearly all of the Indian subcontinent under his rule. However, the Hindus who had suffered under him fought back after his death, and the Mughal Empire quickly fell into decline as the Portuguese, French, and most of all, the British, began encroaching on their old glory.
After the last Mughal Emperor took part in the Indian Mutiny against Britain, he was exiled to Burma, thus affectively ending the Mughal dynasty. His descendants are still alive today.
