Göbekli Tepe

Current Version: 3 (Updated 21 November 2014)
Gobekli Tepe predates even Agriculture, and is the oldest known man-made religious site on Earth, with an estimated date of construction at around 8000 BCE. Built in Turkey near the Syrian border, the site wasn't identified until the 1960's, when it was thought to be a Byzantine cemetery. Proper excavations on the site did not begin in earnest until 1995, when the true nature was revealed to be a neolithic religious site. Several of the large monolithic pillars, which were all quarried on site with flint tools and transported uphill with Neolithic technologies, feature animal motifs which are believed to be sacred. In whole, the site currently excavated is believed to be at least 300 metres in diameter, with excavations still ongoing and recovering more of the site. However, the site remains a key insight into human society of the period, having just emerged from the last Ice Age and slowly beginning the transition into an agricultural revolution which would ultimately give birth to civilisation. Ingame, Gobekli Tepe provides +2 Faith from every source of Stone and Marble worked by the city, and does not require a technology.
