[LH] Haakon Haakonson IV (v 1) 2016-10-05

It's finally here, Haakon Haakonson IV of Norway. It is believed that during his reign, Medieval Norway reached its peak.

Haakon Haakonson IV was born in 1204. He was declared the king's son shortly after his father, Haakon III, died. When he was young, Norway was in a period of civil war. In the year 1217, when he was only 13, Haakonson became king of Norway. For a time, the church refused to recognize him, due to the fact that he was an illegitimate son. It wasn't until six years after he became king that they finally recognized him. During the early years of his reign, Skule Bårdsson was chosen to rule one-third of the kingdom as Earl. The relationship between Skule and Haakonson became strained over the years, as Haakonson asserted more power. In 1225, in an attempt ot reconcile the relationship, Haakonson married Skule's daughter, Margrét Skúladóttir. In 1239, Skule betrayed Haakonson and proclaimed himself king. The rebellion ended a year later, with the execution of Skule. After this, much of Haakonson's reign was an era of peace. He died on December 16, 1263, when he was staying in the Orkney Islands.
