Ra is the main antagonist of the movie Stargate, which would spawn a long-running and popular television series. The main premise behind the series is that aliens once lived on Earth posing as the gods of several ancient mythologies, using stationary wormhole generators (the "Stargates" of the title) to transport to Earth and back.
Ra is a Goa'uld, a parasitic alien that can inhabit and control human bodies. In the Stargate canon, Ra first discovered Earth 10,000 years ago, taking control of a young boy (played by Jaye Davidson, better known as the "girl who isn't a girl" from The Crying Game) claiming to be the Egyptian sun god of the same name and enslaving a good part of the human race. After a 5000 year rule, Ra was deposed and his Stargate was buried in Egypt. In 1928, the Stargate was rediscovered and shipped to America, where it would finally be reopened in 1994. Humans once again made contact with Ra, now ruling enslaved humans on the planet Abydos. Ra was killed by the human strike force and his subjects freed. The power vacuum left by his death form much of the plot of the series Stargate SG-1
