Original Description/Intro:
The Three Punic Wars fought between Rome and Carthage
resulted in Rome becoming the leading power in the Western
Mediterranean. Early relations had been friendly, but the
Carthaginian occupation of Sicily, prompted by commercial
interest, threatened the trade and security of Rome's allies.
Rome's intervention led to the First Punic War. The Romans built a
fleet to challenge the naval strength of Carthage and reduced Sicily
to a Roman Province.
^
The Carthaginians under Hamilcar Barca, and his son
Hannibal, conquered Spain starting the Second Punic War.
Hannibal crossed into Italy and defeated many Roman units.
Worn down by the tactics of Fabius Cunctator, who avoided pitched
battles, and deprived of the help of his brother Hasdrubal,
Hannibal was recalled. Scipio Africanus drove the Carthaginians
from Spain and invaded Africa. After his defeat by Scipio Africanus,
Hannibal advised acceptance of the harsh Roman terms of peace.
Carthage nevertheless made a quick economic recovery.
^
On the pretext of a Carthaginian attack on one of Rome's allies,
Rome opened the Third Punic War, landed in Africa and destroyed
Carthage completely, literally ploughing the city under the soil.
^
^^NOTES
^No technologies may be acquired by conquest.
^Research is not a factor--don't bother.
^Government switching is not allowed.
^There is no barracks improvement--veteran units must be earned.
