With development of the Chi-Ri and Chi-To tanks underway during the later parts of the war, Japan had decided to begin two tank destroyer programs using the chassis of both medium tanks. The Chi-Ri would eventually lead to the Ho-Ri tank destroyer designs and prototype, however it had not always been just it. There had also been plans for a more conventional TD tank with a front mounted superstructure. While originally being declined in favor of the Ho-Ri, it was later reintroduced with the Chi-Ri's production chassis as seen in this diagram.
