saxons vs vikings

I watched season 1 (iirc it has 4 seasons already). Season 1 was pretty low-budget, next to similar shows afaik. Also, what is the appeal supposed to be? It has some gore, but not that much - i expected more gore in a show about viking raiders - and the depiction of viking life seems to be...
