If my understanding is right, I should not be able to spot out opponent's membership until I discover that society, right?
I played a few games and it looks like membership information is always open in Diplomatic screen, regardless of my discovery.

No, I don't think so. It is rather the other way round - you can learn about the membership of others by sending a delegation alone, while reaching the level of "secret" diplomatic visibility might even cause you getting an invitation. It was discussed discussion here:
