1.29 Industrial Age Crash

I have regular Civ3 patched to 1.29 and entering the Industrial Age causes a crash.

I know this has something to do with Settlers or Workers as I've seen on other forums.

What I havent been able to find is how to FIX this. I've searched on here but not found anything, how can I play past the Industrial Age without it crashing?

I dont have the save anymore. I thought it was corrupted so I deleted it. Then I tried a new game and the same thing happened. I thought the save was corrupted so I deleted it and searched for why my savegames were being corrupted and I found a forum post that it was a game file ITSELF, not my savegames.

I can play another one to the Industrial Age and upload it, if you need that.

Also, how would I upload the save?

At the bottom of the post, before you can submit it, there is a 'Manage Attachments' button. This is not available in the Quick Reply box. You would upload it from there.

Have you tried reinstalling? Also, did you make any changes to the game?

Yes re-installing hasnt worked and I havent added anything to the game except the 1.29 patch

Yes, which is what I read was the problem. The 1.29 patch apparently did something to the Settler or Worker to where it corrupted their uniforms for the Industrial Age so when they try to switch it crashes.

Try downloading the patch again and seeing if that helps. You might have had a corrupted download.

Vinegar,

did you modify any of the files?

i would look at the era splash file as this is one of the first things to appear during an era transition.

and yes, the worker, settler, and the army units are era-specific and could very well be part of the problem.

lastly, is there a particular error message? or is it the straight-to-black-->desktop?

I didnt modify anything except the .exe

I had to replace it for the game to actually work in the first place.

I got a Fatal Error message but I didnt keep it. Im playing the game currently trying to power to the Industrial Age to get the error code. Hopefully I'll have that soon.

a few more thoughts:

how is your available RAM? i had problems in the past w/ this (too low) and fixed it by plugging in some sticks.

does the crash occur exactly as you transition into the Ind era? i mean, w/ the era splash and all that?

is it the text box error message or the one that has the little conquests icon on it saying something like "A problem occurred...and program must close"? if it's the latter then it's something more difficult to diagnose.

one issue i've seen although i'm not so sure it applies to your case is reaching a maximum units allowed (MUA) threshhold. in this event, the game craps out w/ that diffucult to diagnose crash message. can't seem to recall the exact no. of units that comprises the MUA but it's in the several thousands (i've seen it happen though). by units i mean the actual units on the map. there's a hardcoded (and difficult to reach) limit.

if i were in your shoes, i would try to run the last save on file (i realize you deleted the latest one) and see if it can get past that nagging point...and snap a screen shot, too :) so we can maybe help diagnose the problem :D

I had similar problem, once I entered to industrial age and once settler or worker was chosen in "build menu" game crashed, same if settler or worker was chosen "in game".

Solution:
1. I download patch again
2. Completely uninstalled civ (from Add/Remove programs),
--Had to uninstall civilization and its patch (bolth showed as installed)
3. Restarted computer
4. Manually deleted civ folder.
5. Reinstalled game
6. Patched

That worked for me.
