1.61 patch does NOT fix problem for 6800 users

Hi folks, i'm having the same problem as described in this thread - game plays fine for a while but at random it just locks up, requiring me to turn off the power to the computer.

I've got a gigabyte 6800 card and I've not had this problem in any other program except for civ 4.

From reading this thread it seems that going back to archaic drivers seems to fix this problem. Is there a definitive answer on which driver we should use? Do we need to go as far back as 7x.xx drivers to fix this problem, or are there more recent versions which do the trick?

Also, has there been any official word from take two, firaxis or nvidia about this? It seems to be a common problem for many 6800 users.

I'm new here, but I've been reading these various threads involving issues with the GeForce 6800/6800GT. I'm specifically using the BFG GeForce 6800GT OC card. I get the nasty lil' crash that causes the "Multi-Colored Checkerboard Screen" pattern with the "Mooninite Quad-Laser Bullet" mouse cursor. (For those who don't know, this is an "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" reference.) There are various pictures of the occurance on other threads.

I have tried most of the "fixes" proposed on these various threads short of buying new hardware. I've never hit over 80 degrees so I don't think the card's cooling system is the issue. I also don't know if it is a driver problem, as reverting to the 71.89 forceware driver has not fixed the issue for me either. The game also crashes using the latest version of 91.47 forceware.

The crash seems to occur almost exclusively when I open the city display screen. The game doesn't always crash when I open the screen and sometimes it will crash when I am doing something outside of the city display screen. I'd say that an estimated 95% of the time it crashes while in the city display screen though. I've been able to play entire games without it crashing if I avoid openning the city screen.

I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the exact same problem with the exact same card make and model as I have has found a definitive fix to the issue. It would also be nice to know if Fireaxis is aware of this issue and if they are working on a solution, be it a patch or something else.

my crashes occur in pretty much every part of the game, at random, and without warning - it just locks up completely requiring nothing short of a power down to get out of the glitch.

quite a severe problem, and it seems to be happening on a great number of people's systems.

any updates?
