'Ello;

Admittedly longtime lurker here - been following several of the playthroughs here, and thought I might start my own, both to showcase my particular favourite 'boxed' scenario, and to help with my meager cIV skills. I must be insane or something :crazyeye:

At any rate, we're playing the '1000 AD' scenario, taking advantage of (or clawing back from) where the civs were in those days :)

At any rate, I'm going to be starting off with one of my RL favourite civs:

Civ4ScreenShot0000.JPG

Note that I am normally a Prince-level player, so this should prove more than enough of a challenge :p

The Starting situation:

Civ4ScreenShot0001.JPG

Small, and pretty isolated - not exactly the best start for a warmonger. The island is both a blessing and a curse; we don't have to worry too much about attacks, but we're going to need to do a lot of ferrying troops, at least until we establish a bit of a presence :)

Our neighbours are Korea, who shares our religion, but is both smaller than us and weaker. They're generally a pushover. And then there's China... On the occassions that I've played the map through, China almost always becomes a superpower. Right at the start they have lots of good land and a decent tech lead on the rest of the world. Somehow, we're going to have to deal with them, and likely from a poorer position...

Civ4ScreenShot0002.JPG

This only the middle of a... decidedly single-minded tech tree. One the one hand, we have Philosophy, in case we (for whatever reason) want to be pacifists, I guess... On the other hand, we're lacking both Sailing and Alphabet. I'd love to hear Tokugawa explain how he got to the island in the first place with only tiny fishing boats to sail with :p!

I'm a little behind in techs. Not as badly as some other civs on this map, but with the ten-ton gorilla of China sitting at my doorstep, I'm going to feel it all the worse

Our three cities. I see one good production city, one decent (but not spectacular) science city, and one city I don't know what to do with >.>

So the starting position is certainly not the best - we're going to be the underdogs for much of the early game. There's room to expand north into Hokkaido, but beyond that, it looks like war is the only option to help carve out a decent-sized empire (yes, I much prefer sitting back and building up a peaceful empire - why do you think we're playing a warmonger :crazyeye:).

Several of China's coastal cities are quite juicy - but Qin Shi Huang isn't about to roll over and let me take them, and he's certainly got the power to stop me (even with the starting war with Gengis, who usually plays dead pretty quickly), so, sorry Wang Kon, ol' buddy, but you're going to be on the chopping block first >.>

Also probably shoot for an 'early' coastal wonder. Both the Colossus and the Great Lighthouse are available, but we can probably only take one before the AI scoops the other. Still, when running a sea-based economy, either one should help up get up to tech parity a lot :)

(Hum... need to work on image-posting skills, as well... >.>)
(Certainly feel outclassed posting this, but no real way of finding out whether it's the right thing without trying.)

Just a couple questions. How did you get a lighthouse in Hakata and kama-something if you do not have sailing?
Why have you waited so long before popping the borders of hakata? that gold would help nicely.

And another question...

Why did you not make settling on the mainland a HUGE priority? You have just 3 meagre cities high in food but good for little else. Since the map you are playing is well known to most it is safe to say that the mainland is well worth grabbing. it also gives you a foot in the door to take China's juicy land once you have samurai - which is now.

I'm in the course of playing a peaceful Japan game, in 1200 AD I have 18 cities, 3 on the main island, 2 on Continental Asia, and then 13 on all the islands going down to Australia. I still have 5 more to settle, 2 more on Australia, 2 on New Zealand, and 1 more island.

I have had the Colossus since mid - BC's and don't plan on giving up the bonus for a very long time :p. 80% of my tiles worked are water tiles.

I agree, people don't seem to realise he has not taken a turn yet.

I would agree with heading into Korea, but if possible I would also get exploring asap and try to tech trade with everybody other than China in order to haul them back from their current tech lead.

At Shurdas- he's playing the 1000 AD map, so this is just what you start with.
Really?

Well I obviously did not know that. :D Seems a little weird to play a civ game like that, but whatever floats your boat is cool I guess.

Good luck in that case! :goodjob:

Sorry, I should have made that more specific - yes this is the 1000 AD map. I enjoy jumping into the middle of a game like that, and Neal's already doing a much better job at the basic Earth map than I ever could, which would have made this thread redundant.

I wouldn't say *all* of the cities are useless. Maoi Statues + mining the copper in Kamakura will give us a (relatively) decent production city. Which will, of course, be an absolute necessity if we plan on getting anywhere on the mainland :crazyeye:

Agreed that we need contact with other civ (and alphabet!) for tech trades, which means scouts; the best civs for trading with are all over in Europe, and there is no Suez canal analogy in this world. Could send a galley over, but rounding Africa may take too long...

Awesome. I've always found playing scenarios like this, starting with stuff you didn't build yourself, to be a bit weird and alien-feeling, but I've always been fascinated by them. I'll be following this with interest. Obviously, priority #1 is to get some boats in the water and try to beat China to Korea. The same basic strategies then apply. Send your Samurai to glory!

Quick round today - much of it was getting the... erm... backwater up to the point where we're actually relevant.

First up; a couple changes to the map:

1panamahu2.jpg

2andesev5.jpg

Those of you following the 'King of the World' series should be familiar with these - knocking down the mountain on Panama, and allowing Huayna access to the South American interior, in order to help those two out a bit... and they're going to need all the help they can get.

On the home front, started with some civics changes:

I have all this extra growth just lying around; might as well use it :p Lazy bums - don't do anything but sit around and breed. You can see Sailing already queued up, too - it's practically mandatory in this game.

At the very least, they get a scout up and running for our explorations:

Of course, the first order of business is to go say 'hi' to the Ainu goody hut hidden away in Hokkaido. So I send... him...

6ryuogawm3.jpg

WRONG WAY!

...idiot...

Ryuoga works his way south to meet the Khmer and the Indians. Which turns out to be a dead end; Saladin controls all the way to the Himalayan foothills, and, as has been mentioned, he ain't lettin' any pathetic scout with a poor sense of direction through...

Meanwhile, we send some settlers to claim the only open land on this island, unescorted, because I figured the only way they would run into trouble is if those Ainu popped some warriors, right?

10oopsnj6.jpg

Right...

I really shouldn't have been surprised.

On the plus side, though:

11colossusmo3.jpg

That immediately boosts our tiny economy a lot. In spite of only having three cities, we can now keep tech parity with everyone we know (well... except that massive purple stain on our gameplan over there...)

At this point, Wang Kon comes knocking with a deal for maps, which, figuring a little info on our future lands wouldn't hurt, accept. Normally by this point, he's got a city or two in Kamchatka, and I like a little forwarning about such things :)

This time?

The great khan must've gotten bored throwing his outdated keshiks at China's walls or something, which certainly puts me on the clock - I don't want him beating me to the juicy target of Seoul!

Revving up for war, now - settler #2 doesn't see any further barbarians, and settles:

Shortly after:

15freespicehx8.jpg

Lessee... spices, silks, silver, gold, and dyes on this tiny island, surrounded by a food-rich ocean. If I remember to use it, that whip is going to get a workout :crazyeye: !

And with my war preparations complete:

16koreawarkm0.jpg

Sorry, Wang, but it's for the greater good... of me...

I was worried about not packing enough - only six samurai - but I wanted to get that city before the Mongols invaded.

Turns out the worrying was for naught. A longbow and an archer were all the military poor Korea had left. Seoul was ours. And it came with a nice bonus: the University of Sankore (sorry, no screenie).

Well

Between the University and the Colossus, we are certainly well on our way to being an economic power, in spite of our size. On the other hand, With Genghis sitting in P'yongyang, with his outdated troops, there's some more easy land to grab. And then, of course, there's Qin, who we're going to have to deal with at some point. Preferrably before he decides to deal with us.

Here's our illustrious empire:

Not really much to look at... yet...

Nice to know Khan and Qin are still at war - hopefully they'll be too busy with each other to notice us before it's too late :ninja:

Finally, the save:View attachment Tokugawa AD-1280.CivBeyondSwordSave

It was already there when he started it, he's playing the Earth 1000 AD map. Pretty bad spot for a city anyways imo, lol. I mean you can fit 3 'ok' cities on the Japanese islands, but they won't be fantastic except for the capitol.

Note: Snowy, you should really put that in your original post if you haven't, else some people may be confused without reading other posts.

Ouch... Rough luck losing the Settler, there. Well, at least nobody can say you didn't earn your win.

I don't know about the Civilian builds (A 32 turn Forge and a 33 turn University!?). You should be training as many Samurai as possible and building boats to get them to Korea. Once your empire stretches from Hokkaido to Bangladesh, then you can start thinking about higher learning. At least, that's how I'd go about it. I can't imagine that wiping the Mongols and Chinese off the map is going to have huge diplomatic implications...

But, then, I'm in the middle of a military romp in my Genghis Khan game, so maybe my blood's just a little hot right now...

My favorite scenario..especially my one go with Suryavarman II ;)

Good luck. My one advice (way late) would be to start The Oracle in the northern city, then build a Mine on the forested hills. You can then take Liberalism as your free tech, choosing ANOTHER free tech...hehehe.
