This is a great map! I like the projection and the area covered. Ok, maybe I 'd like to see a little more of north africa so that Egypt could fit in, but what the hey... I like it!
Because I like it, I'm going to put some time in and comment on it. No offence meant, take it as a compliment! Feel free to ignore, implement and comment my suggestions. I'll start off with the north-western part, since I know that part better than the rest of europe. I'll post more if you think it's of any use.
ICELAND: Add some whales around Iceland. Iceland and Japan are the only nations "fishing" whales at the moment.
IRELAND: Looks good. I like that the Irish have horses and salpeter, but no Iron.
One problem though: the good farmland (wheat & cattle) conflict with the good fishing (whales and fish). For example: if you want to build a city that can use the whale at (4,38) you have to build it on (6,36) which is a wheat, but if you build there you loose the wheats food bonus, since extra food never counts for the city square. Same with whale (10,38) & wheat (9,35) and whale (4,30) & game (7,31).
I don't know if this is intentional or not, but it can be annoying!
GREAT BRITAIN: Just two comments.
1) Does GB have that much gold? I have no idea myself, but I've never heard of it.
2) London has Iron and Coal within city radius. If you move just one of them a little to the west/north, the English won't be able to build Ironworks in their capital, but will have to build them in a city in Wales or lower scotland instead. An uncorrupted ironworks is pretty powerful, and Englands industrial region has always been Wales, so perhaps switch places between the coal and the aluminium?
SCANDINAVIA: Sweden has mineral subtantial depostits. Sweden was mining and selling a lot of silver & copper during the middle ages, and swedish iron was strategically important during world war 2 and exported coal to england during the industrial revolution. So perhaps one iron and one gold in the hills north-east of the scandinavian starting location (stockholm) and one iron up in the snow-capped mountains in the far north?
DENMARK: Denmark is very flat and very fertile. Perhaps remove the hills and add some cattle?
NETHERLANDS: The Netherlands are Agricultural, so they benefit from being placed next to a river. Perhaps move the starting location one tile south-west?
(Note on Rubber & Saltpeter: I won't comment on the placement of rubber or saltpeter. Both are neccesary for the game, but rubber dosn't exist i Europe, and saltpeter can easily be manufactured. A map designer basicaly has to add them here and there for game balance purposes, and "realism" (on a europen map) can't be applied. The same with some of the luxuries like silk and spices. If anyone makes a mod with this map (as it deserves!) resources like rubber, saltpeter, silk, spices, incense etc should probably be replaced with other resources like rare metals (strategic), salt (luxury), etc, but that's outside the scope of this map and my comments.)
