And oh noes...they are democrats....

TRENTON, N.J. — Eleven public officials from across New Jersey, including a mayor and two state lawmakers, were arrested Thursday in a federal corruption probe, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Democratic state Assemblymen Mims Hackett Jr. and Alfred E. Steele were among those arrested, along with Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera, a law enforcement official said.

The chief of staff to Newark's City Council president was also arrested, the official said, along with Passaic Councilmen Jonathan Soto and Marcellus Jackson and five Pleasantville school board members.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to upstage a formal announcement, said the arrests were related to insurance contracts for local governments.

The arrests were first reported Thursday by WNBC-TV in New York.

Initial court appearances were scheduled in federal court Thursday afternoon in Trenton.

The U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Christopher J. Christie, and FBI Special Agent in Charge Weysan Dun have scheduled a 3:30 p.m. news conference at the courthouse.

The arrests are the latest in an anti-corruption campaign waged by Christie's office, and mark the second major corruption roundup this year.

Two Democratic senators, Wayne Bryant of Lawnside and Sharpe James of Newark, are facing pending federal corruption charges. Both pleaded not guilty.

More than 100 public officials in the state have been convicted on federal corruption charges in the last five years.

More than 100 convicted in the last 5 years in the state of New Jersey??? What the heck is going on there?

You'd think people would be less partisan when it comes to corruption...

Ugh. It always pisses me off when school staff becomes corrupted.

If they are guilty, then :goodjob: Department of Justice. It may be a little harder to convict than usual thanks to the cloud created by Gonzales' selection of U.S. Attorneys to fire in 2006. Gives the defense lawyers plenty to work with in terms of muddying the waters.

How is this news? Its Jersey this is expected, come on ...its Jersey!!!!!

Right wing extremist american party no 1, meet right wing extremist american party 2....

You gotta be kidding me. You guys say this here, and remain silent on all the spamity spam we get when a republican taps his toe for example?

puh-leese.

Any conviction of any american politician is really quite good news.

What do you want me to say on the republican thread? That his innocent? Guilty? This should be less partisan?

I could care less about that sort of things (his offences).

I would hope the federal government investigates into more corruption charges here in New Jersey..

but then we'd probably have to call for re-elections.

Is the "US Attorney" a politically appointed attorney, or is he elected?
Nominated by the President, approved by the Senate. In theory, the appointment is political, but once in place, the appointee should be given a great deal of deference in exercising prosecutorial discretion.

Isn't being shocked about corruption in New Jersey (or Chicago for that matter) kind of like being shocked to learn that there are Catholics in Latin America?

Bob Torricelli wasn't the only one? I'm speechless.

Was this part of the Esplanad project? Was Councilman Zellman from the Sopanos a Democrat or Republican? Either way he got to hit Tony Sopranos hot Russian ex.

Sorry, I've been rewatching the series on DVD.

Was Councilman Zellman from the Sopanos a Democrat or Republican?
Clearly Zellman was a Democrat as this article makes clear. :)

@MB, the difference is that Craig is a prominent Repub, a Senator, and, again for the umpteenth time, he's one of those "Family Values" browbeaters. So yes, when you're a nationally prominent politician and your hypocrisy is exposed, esp. when it involves an issue of significant national debate, then guess what, you're news.

Also make a mental note that all news outlets are covering this so that we don't have to hear the whining, in say a year, when some Repub scandal hits that "WHY DIDN'T THE MAJOR OUTLETS COVER THE NJ SCANDAL????!?!?!?!?"

Amazing how so many rugged-individualist stand-on-your-own-2-feet conservatives become such martyrs when they (incorrectly) think that some democrat bad guy got "let off easy" by a bunch of losers in an internet forum. ;)

Jeez, is corruption contagious or what?

The Pleasantville school board members also referred undercover agents to public officials in northern New Jersey, who accepted bribes as well, according to the release. The northern New Jersey officials referred the undercover agents to "still other corrupt public officials," the news release states.

Seems everybody knew someone else who wanted 'a piece of the action'.
