My simple modding exercise has finally taken shape! While there are still stylistic problems (Shakespeare's tongue is not my first language) and the .xml work (Civilopedia, Diplotext) is FAR from complete, graphics, traits and favorite civics are already included! Check out the following civs with their new "symbolical" or "abstract" leaders:

For a better understanding of the mod concept, read this thread first:

China:
Sun Yat-sen- he represents the modernization of the Middle Kingdom. IS TO BE REPLACED BY Lu Xun.
Confucius- Has created an ancient, universal set of ethics which is still important for almost any Far Eastern culture with Chinese influence.

America:
Ralph Waldo Emerson- Father of the US' intellectual declaration of independence.
Samuel Clemens- who does not like his humourous, yet also critical works?

England:
Shakespeare- do I need to say more?
Cecil Rhodes- I was in need of some evil guy.

France:
Hugo: Included because of his political influence and his genius.
Robespierre: Same as Rhodes. Can be regarded as the father of state terrorism.

Germany
Karl Marx- Communism, wasn't necessarily a good thing but had a HUGE impact on world history.
Martin Luther- Reformation, Protestantism. Sorry, German Catholics. Aber vielleicht wird es ja beim nächsten Mal einen bedeutenden deutschen Katholiken geben! Perhaps there will be a German Catholic "leader*" next time!

Persia: Firdouzi- sorry, wrong spelling. But the Shahnameh is a great read!

Arabia: Averroes- maybe I should've chosen a more religious leader...

Greece: Plato

Rome: Cicero

Spain: Cervantes

* no, no not that guy. You know what leader means if directly translated into German... (if you omit the An-)

Known issues:
Luther sounds like a communist because he shares his text with Marx (compare Frederick/Bismarck problem).
.xml- errors, typos etc. (i.e. CIVIC_FREEDOM_OF_SPEECH instead of CIVIC_FREE_SPEECH)

For Persia, add Omar Khayyam- poet, mathemitician, astronomer, philosopher, perhaps the greatest intellectual of the Middle Ages.

Russia-Tolstoy!

Thank you for your positive responses- I am surprised indeed  ... I have long abandoned this attempt at a mod project (as you can see, its's basically just graphics and fairly incomplete), for uni and err... BTS (there are other leisure pastimes as well, of course ;) ) are keeping me busy for quite a time now. It's basically a really eclectic approach- principles you associate with its origin in a certain civilisation (how about choices like Thoreau as an American leader or Robert Burns for the Celts), but unfortunately I have been fairly sloppy with Islamic, Russian etc. civs (this should be remedied of course). That's why you have Rhodes (representing British colonialism) and Robespierre (revolution gone wrong and transformed into tyranny- as in 1911, 1917 or 1979 etc. ...)
Let's see if I find the data somewhere... well, if somebody's (in case it's not myself) interested in backporting to BTS and working on completion, that could be nice.

Some thoughts
China: IMHO perfectly represented by Lu Xun and Confucius (Mao and Qin Shi Huang, kinda): Radical modernity vs. tradition (not as "ossified" as the cliché suggests though). Eastern Zhou philosophers like Han Fei, Mozi or Zhuangzi would be another interesting approach.

Germany: Of course, Marx and Luther (at least the former) are somewhat controversial sources, why not Goethe or Kant in addition to them?

Russia: Tolstoy or Dostoevsky or both- as they were not only truly outstanding, rightfully considered "canonical" writers nowadays, but also profound thinkers. I am a bit divided on the second LH.

Japan: A Zen master or Fukuzawa Yukichi (initially one of the most outspoken proponents of westernisation in the 19th century- the perfect Anti-[CIV]- Tokugawa)? A single leader is certainly not enough...

Persia or Ottomans: Rumi perhaps?

Vikings: Snorri Sturluson?

etc. etc. etc.

Too bad humanities are a bit underrepresented by the current GPP system (c'mon, only the Great Artist?), an "intellectual" kind of thing missing...

AI programming would be interesting, as you may flesh out the characters in various ways (e.g. Marx being over-zealous about his favorite civic).

So long...

For France, wouldn't François-Marie Arouet (a.k.a. Voltaire) be a better choice? I mean, many of his ideas and philosophies went on to influence the future democracies of many nations.
For the Celts, George Bernard Shaw has long been a personal favorite philosopher of mine.
For Germany, perhaps Ludwig Wittgenstein would be a better choice? I know he isn't German-borne, but neither was Hitler.

My contribution: Portugal
Camoes - Our greatest epic poet
Fernando Pessoa - a poet known for his ability to split into many I 's!
