INTRO:

WWII always had a special meaning to me. My paternal grandfather, former history student, entered the war as a midshipman in the Soviet Black Sea Fleet, became a marine when his destroyer was bombed and sunk, fought in North Caucasus, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary. He suffered contusion in the very heavy actions during Lake Balaton Defensive Operation in March 1945, and never fully recovered from it. He did not like to talk about the War at all... 12 volumes of official Soviet History of WWII was the first history book I ever read, which inspired numerous map drawings and war games I was inventing and playing with myself and my brother :high5:

MOD:

So needless to say I went through a lot of testings while selecting a WWII scenario for PBEM. I respect and enthusiastically support all the work done by all the WW2 scenario creators but for some personal reasons ended up with WORLD WAR II 1939 mod by asioasioasio. I did some PBEM adjustments to WW2 1939 - Europe Scenario by kodzi and asioasioasio, mostly keeping initial number of units the same (couple of exceptions). Major change was giving most of Canadian cities (but not units!) to British player, reducing Canada to British vassal represented by Ottawa. Minor changes are too many to mention them all -- like creating Malta, making USA neutral in 1939, replacing Dublin with Belfast (Irish rulers were neutral, even expressing condoleances upon Hitler's suicide :crazyeye:), etc... So the resulting file (German start) is attached at the end of this post.

Edit: Game started 2-17-2013. May the strongest ideology win! :mwaha:

PLAYERS:

Axis Ideology Champion (The Third Reich, master of Balkan Axis, and Italy) Tigranes

Western Allies Ideology Champion (British Empire with Canadian cities, master of 1 city civ Canada) kiwitt

Comintern Ideology Champion (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) academia

I would really love to play with some dedicated WW2 fan from former Axis country ;) -- German, Italian, Hungarian... You got an idea. So please PM me.

I am hoping for a fast paced 3 player semi-private game, so you don't have to post here, not even GPS -- we will figure things out among three of us

VICTORIES:

There are 3 ideologies (Axis, Western Allies, Comintern -- former religions) and 21 objective cities in the game:

attachment.php

In 1939 your ideology controls 6 objective cities with 3 objective cities remaining neutral. "Ideology controls a city" means ideology is present in the city and city belongs to you or to the civ that shares your ideology. There are 3 possible victories, one set by game and 2 by house rules:

Ideological Victory At any time any player whose ideology controls 12 or more Objective cities (as defined above) instantly wins the game.

WWII victory You win the game by the beginning of the last turn (Week 2 May 1945, after 243 turns :crazyeye:) if your ideology controls more objective cities than your opponents.

Time Victory Regular in-game victory by score in unlikely event we need a tie breaker with each of the ideologies controlling 7 cities (7*3=21).

HOUSE RULES:

Please do not be annoyed with these lengthy house rules. They are there to insure realistic WWII play:

THE MIGHTY BAKER'S DOZEN

1. No gifting units. Period.
2. No airlifts, except for units representing a single person, e.g. Great General...
3. Cities cannot be gifted except only when liberated to the original Sep 1939 owner (this includes Canadian cities, which can be returned to Canada by human British player).

4. No permanent alliance between human players (includes Italy with Germany).
5. Italy goes AI if Rome is lost to any civ. Human Germany and human Italy cannot fight each other.
6. Once war is declared no peace deal can be accepted/proposed until the fall of "belligerent" capital.

7. Before 1941 Germany and/or Italy can declare on USSR only after fall of Paris, while USSR can declare on Germany and/or Italy only after fall of Helsinki
8. Before 1945 UK and USSR can declare on each other only after the fall of Berlin.
9. Before 1940 UK can declare on Italy only if Italy is at war with someone.
10. Before 1940 Italy can declare on UK only after fall of Paris.

11. Human players cannot switch from their ideology (religion) and original Politics Civic (Fascist, Right Wing, Communist).
12. No land crossing of Benelux, Spain and Turkey by any human player during OBs with those civs, while those countries stay neutral (not involved in any wars).
13. If the USA has not joined the side of the Allies by the end of 1941 and declared war, Germany declares war of the USA on Week 1 of December 1941. So does human Italy.

Everything else is allowed, unless all 3 players agree otherwise.

I´m tempted, but I´m not sure about some of the house rules:

3. No artillery range bombardment from Transports.

Why not?

5. No permanent alliance between human players (includes Italy with Germany).

Wait what? How can both Italy and Germany be human, if you want only one player representing the Axis?

11. Before 1949 Italy can declare on UK only after fall of any non-Polish city.

Shouldn´t that be 1939?

I´m tempted, but I´m not sure about some of the house rules:

1. Transport rule is pretty much standard nowadays. Transports are, you know, transports, not 4 cannon strong Battleships with range bombardement abilities. Field artillery is required to be unloaded and deployed on the ground to start range bombardement. Edit I just double checked and thankfully very smart scenario creators took care of this issue, so no house rule is needed. While in Transpor Artillery displays the regular bombardement range graphics but actual bombardement is impossible (no button) :goodjob:

2. Axis human player controls two civilizations at the same time. Game order goes Germany-emals Britain-emails Russia (to the dude on your avatar ;) ) -emails to Germany's player who plays Italy and then he plays Germany again (new turn). Italy operates under very specific house rules (goes AI if Rome is lost). Then AI Italy can do whatever AI whats it to do, it can even declare on Germany, like Italy did in real life. We all know that Italian Government of General Badoglio declared war on Germans on October 13, 1943, thus becoming an Allied co-belligerent, though not an ally.

3. Silly typo. Game ends in Week 2 1945,, what 1949? Fixed to 1940!

Alrighty then, count me in!

I don't want to sound demanding, but would you please download the PBEM Autosave from the Opening Post and familiarize yourself with overall situation (I assume you want to be Axis, right?).
This scenario is quite complex and quite stylish, but some people do not like the dark depressing stylish terrain or the idea of Trucks (ground transport), or the way planes get killed even when they are scouting and etc.

I just want to make sure you know exactly what you are signing up to :D I spent close to month testing this scenario and still discover more and more depths in it. Let me tell you -- those authors really put a lot of thought into this brutal and time consuming World War 2 gem, but incompetent AI destroys all the joy.

You are welcome to play Germany's first turn whenever you ready and post it here. I hope kiwitt (Britain) will get in touch with you about his email...

I need help as in:

1. Step by step instructions as to how to download what mod and how to configure it to work with my system (Win7-64).
2. How to run a test play game by myself to familarize myself with the mod.

Now I am not stupid or incapable. I played a ton of SMAC PBEM back a decade or so and I am not computer illiterate. I have an IT degree. But I suffered some brain damage from an accident a number of years ago. Its been a long slow recovery. This pretty much wiped out a lot of memory. I've come a long way back but its a bit of a struggle. I can beat single player Civ4 on immortal.

I just get stuck on stuff that has changed from the older operating systems and I get frustrated over it. If you are willing to invest a little time in helping me I'll be willing to help you guys out as a player in the game or a replacement, standby or whatever. Quid pro quo.

I am sorry to hear about injury. :( I hope I can be helpful:

1. Download exe file -- this mod is one of the few that comes with professionally done installation file with uninstall option.

2. Run the file, but don't accept any default directories for installation they would offer. Rather navigate through windows to your Beyond the Sword/Mods folder and copy the address to there from the top address bar. You can then paste to instead of teh path suggested by installer.

3. Sit back and enjoy files being unpacked and installed automatically. No need to unpack anything: asioasioasio is an amazing dude :goodjob:

4. After installation go inside WW2-1939 Folder then go inside Private Maps and double click European scenarion. The second map is global scenario which we dont need.

Things should be self evident after that -- if you stumble at any stage -- feel free to post here or take a screen shot -- I will try to help. Must be pretty simple, really.

Well, I just took a look and... it wasn´t pretty. For starters, I somehow managed to lose four Bombers and one Fighter to a single Polish Intercepter that barely got scratched. I spent two hours playing the starting turn before I gave up. Now, I know that it´s certainly historical for me to loose, but with my apparent incompetency your troops will be back for Christmas. I hope you don´t mind if I want to call quits, you´re better off with a player that actually knows what he is doing.

If you like I can take over the Axis and someone else can take the Western Allies.

I don't mind getting beaten up ;)

One question: what speed are you planning on playing?

I'm in a PBEM in the lower speed and... it's painfully slow!!!

One turn represents a week, go figure.

I understand your feelings, it was the same with me when I have started. Your very first move as a Germany must be to use your super Fighter in Berlin -- it kills any Polish plane on contact. Then you use your other fighters them bombers. Then you advance with ground troops. Pretty much just like in real war. Every scenario has its little tricks and its learning curve -- with all the research path, how the units behave, National and World Wonders, etc... After one month on Emperor I was able to achive all the objectives of the openning post as Germany -- and got bored because of AI's poor play.

Germany is the protagonist in this scenario, and you are not suppose to loose historically azt the beginning. You are suppose to blitzkrieg (before Soviets declare on you, since you want to declare on them the first).

I can be Axis myself, and you can defend Stalingrad one day as Stalin :D But if you want to quit, it's fine ;)

Well, 1939 is Epic, while Today and Minor League are Marathon. The real question is -- how many turns (approximately) this scenario has. Around 250+... But one can win earlier if you secure 12+ objectives. Humans start with 6 (Britain controls 4), AI has 3, but if you are Axis you can grab 3 objectives from AI 2 from 1 player 1 from another and win, so I expect this will be less than 1 year game, with 3 players only. Number of players affects pace exponentially. Only 3 must be reasonable well paced.

Why do you play it at marathon? Epic is the default speed set by the modders :dunno:

tigranes:
first of all, thanks for your invitation! let me tell you that i accept taking command of the Axis and lead it to the inevitable victory :D

however, i noticed that the ww2 1939 scenario that i had and played, is the one for warlords!
when i tried downloading the BTS version, i couldnt do it as the link is dead :(
any idea where i can get the BTS version from?

thx!

Welcome!

I applaud your bravery  :D -- and looking forward to capture Berlin from you :p

Exe file downloads just fine for me from gamefront -- try this link -- it is working, I just checked.

If I could ask you -- would you please try to play hotsit BTS player as Germany just few turns (try to capture Paris ;) ), just to get a feeling of this scenario. It is quite complex, involves many strategic choices about research, buildings, diplomacy, units and War execution in general. Plus, numerous house rules only add to this complexity -- I just want you to make sure you will really enjoy something like this :mischief:

ok, game downloaded and working!
i´ll play a few turns as germany as you suggested and come back later with my impressions.
thx!
