2011 MLB Thread

alright. i love how you try calling me out old boy  it's as if you think i'm completely blinded by my love affair. i think i've watched enough baseball in my time to make assessments. don't agree with it? fine. lay it out. just like i'm about to do.

beltran
.285 avg, 16 homers, 69 rbi, 66 runs scored, 3 SB, 31 2Bs, 61 walks, 73 Ks

beltran stats 2011

now, let's look at what really matters for my argument; beltran is hitting .225 against left handed pitching. pence? .316 against lefties. a look at the other numbers for pence shows a better overall avg at .311. there are other numbers too where pence is better (rbi, sb and some of those obtuse sabre stats) and the point i'm trying to make is that pence is a far better fit for philadelphia. by that i mean that they needed a right handed bat and pence fits this profile much better than beltran.

Why are we even arguing this? Maybe the Giants couldn't match the Phillies package for Pence? We don't know that they valued Beltran OVER Pence.

you guys can crow all you want about me and my love affair. however, my eyes don't deceive me. both of them. i've watched beltran play a lot over the years, when he was good and all that. he is not what he once was. i don't care what stats you throw at me.

Of of course he's not what he once was, he's the best center fielder of the last decade, and while he's certainly in decline, that doesn't mean he has lost all value. In fact he is still quite valuable and should get a decent 2-3 year deal in the off-season.

We're arguing this because El Justo claimed Beltran was "done" and is "washed up," while extolling Pence, when in fact Beltran has had the better season to date, despite being 6 years older and in the twilight of his career :p

I also think that it's important to point out that we (the Giants) are paying next to nothing for Beltran, and we essentially gave up nothing for him. Also he hit the homerun that gave us the early lead last night. So I'm not complaining about this so called "slow bat"

Beltran has more walks, fewer strikeouts, higher OBP, higher SLG and higher OPS than Pence, and he cost the Giants way less than Pence cost the Phillies. Although Pence is better defensively, how simple do you want the stats to be to admit that Beltran has played better than Pence this season?

Will Pence be more valuable to the Phillies in the long run? Probably yes, he's younger, less expensive and under team control beyond this season. But then again, the Phillies paid a premium for Pence, while Beltran was a lot cheaper for the Giants...

difference of opinion. what i find obnoxious (and some of you may find me obnoxious :) which is a fair point imo) is the fact that some folks seems to think that i am blind. far from it. sure i have a rooting interest. but what my eyeballs see tells me pence is better right now and will be for the foreseeable future. the stats are similar in a lot of categories. and fwiw, the package they gave up was not premium, not yet at least. but the odds are surely against any of those guys out-performing pence.

Shoe eating bet!

If the Giants prospect traded for Beltran turns out to be a No. 1 starter, I will post a picture on this forum of me eating a shoe.

If any of the Phillies prospects traded for Pence turn out to outperform Pence, El J will similarly post a picture of himself eating a shoe.

GAUNTLET THROWN! [pimp]

Sports forum is clearly best forum. That's what, the 3rd shoe eating proposition this thread?

Went to the game last night, it was friggen grayte. Some of the best energy I've seen brought to that stadium in a long time. The Madbum brought it last night, allowing one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings of work. The Giants had some nice, timely hitting from the new guys (The Kep had a 2 RBI Double, and Slowbat Beltran hit a gapper in the first). After tonight and the gem by Lincy three nights ago, I really hope this is a sign of great things to come.

Also there's a new hipster alternative to the panda hat.

What do you guys think about the Atlanta Braves?

Fantastic bullpen. If they get quality starting pitching in the playoffs they will be dangerous.

Their starting pitching is good-but-not-great though, they don't have a dominant ace they can lean on, and their lineup doesn't scare me.
