2018 spring patch - AI domination combat test

AI try to capture capital while they cannot hold it due to loyalty.
In one of my games, Scythia went around and attacked Pericles from behind. Athens was conquered but revolted just few turns later (there are 5 frontline Greek cities!)

I saw the same thing as well. They also take them properly in clusters as well, sweeping out whole civs. I also saw the AI picking up leftover cities after a big war off loyalty dropping from their enemies.

I think it's just random and based on several factors. Logistics, terrain, proximity to larger civs that are not at war and have large populations and governors, etc. I don't know if it is possible to write the AI code to make captures based on loyalty and the placement of adjacent cities.

Another good thing I see is that the AI places governors in border cities better than they did before. Used to be they did it when loyalty dropped first to a sizable amount making it easier to snipe them with bread and circuses etc. You can still do that but it's not as easy as it was before.

Are these starts with just one city per player? The AI is very strongly wired to expand with settlers if the option is available to them, which, to be fair, is actually a pretty reasonable course of action given how the normal game is played instead of battle tests. They will nearly always create a Settler around turn 20-30 or so on standard speed followed not long after by a second one. This urge to expand with Settlers remains there even if you unlock every unit iand wonder in the game and reduce the cost to 1.

In my current Viking game Germany put up a respectable defence. Increasing its army (might be coincidence) when i denounced him. His reiters did a good job considering i had a 2 to 1 advantace in military power while going on full offensive. And was using 2 fronts with units protecting each other. I had to retreat more then half of my units or face losses. My culverins placed on hills behind my front line made a difference. If Germany was equal in strenght or had a solid ranged unit positioned in its capital i doubt i could have pushed through without losses. I probably did more damage to him then other way around do.
