The statue was erected in 1875. Most immigrants coming into New York at the time were from the poorer and less-Protestant parts of Europe; they were not people with high levels of educated, or with heavy exposure to "American values". Do you seriously believe that the people who erected it imagined that the penniless migrants stepping off the boats from Ireland, Sicily or Poland were ready-made Americans?
There's only one characteristic that these European peasants shared with the WASPs of old America, and I don't think it's one that you are going to readily admit to preferring.

No the real assess are those who embrace that thinking.
And those who are so 'passionate' about tighter immigration, birthright citizenship, being a major problem and don't think they are part of the White Nationalist problem.
Birthright citizenship is part of the 14th ammendment. One of three amendments passed during post civil war reconstruction with veto proof majority (Johnson tried to veto the 13th and Congress overrode him). It was part of a package of bills intended to give rights to newly emancipated slaves.
Trump's mentions of overturning birthright citizenship is yet another racist dog whistle. It is specifically aimed at that portion of his base. Any moron knows he has no power to undermine an ammendment. If you're in that "Republicans are colorblind, Democrats are the real racists" group and you think Trump's in the right here you are an idiot.

Or even if not in that group, anyone who 'see's the merits' because 'other countries don't have it' and 'we have an immigration problem' is the bigger problem because that is the majority of people who allow White Nationalist ideas to fester.
Trump's base is his base. Those that enable and are complicit while feigning moral superiority, shame.
If people want to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, the best time to push for it is when you have a perceived ally of immigrants in power.
Right now, you cannot support the discussion without implicitly supporting the racist portion of Trump's base
I'm not thinking that anyone overtakes him. The fringe is split between Warren and Sanders, and it seems unlikely that either of them would drop out...and even if one does the combined fringe still doesn't catch Biden. But I think that a health/good of the party sidestep is a distinct possibility. And that would mean that someone who is left in the race besides the fringe favorites could be immediately vaulted to the top by a mere handshake.

Of the three most popular doctrines of constitutional interpretation (living document/liberal, originalism, and textualism), birthright citizenship gets only a marginal support from textualism. There is no utility or moral imperative being served by the practice right now— especially since it's being so heavily abused— and it absolutely wasn't the original intent of the 14th amendment, which as you said, was intended to give rights to the slaves.
There's around 30, but they include countries like New Zealand on that list. In the American way even less. Ours you still need 1 NZ parent or permanent residency and your children will be citizen's.
I don't think Trump's off his rocker there, outside the USA I don't think it would be a big deal. His motivation is a problem though.
Health. I don't think he has the health to be president, or even run a real presidential campaign. He's party faithful, and the party needed a well known name to serve as a placeholder early, so he's in there...but I doubt that he really plans to go the distance.
He's specifically doing it in order to further corrupt the values of the USA as per the wishes of his foreign handlers. The more racist, the more divided, the more unequal and undemocratic the US is, the easier it is for its enemies to exploit it. Hence his specific attacks against and sabotage of social safety nets, racial and cultural integration and religious tolerance, financial stability, voting enfranchisement, foreign relations, environmental action, etc. etc.
