News:
-Crowds eagerly anticipate Serena's final performance;
-Unvaccinated Djoker sits this one out after all;
-Since her winning streak ended at Wimbledon, WTA's No. 1 Iga has played 4-4.

WTA:
Draw is ridiculously open with all but one of the former champions unseeded (Serena, Venus, Stephens, Andreescu, Osaka). The unflagged have had a very strong hard court season and most players are lucky Kasatkina and Samsonova with two titles each are confined to the same quarter. Caroline Garcia is coming off her Cincinnati victory, and Bencic had an impressive run to the quarters in Montreal. Also, Venus/Serena doubles, anyone?

ATP:
Despite a lot of variance on the men's side, Nadal and Medvedev seem more strongly favored. The latter has had a good season, but there have been many exciting runs. FAA has consistently made quarterfinals in his past three tournaments and is seeded in Medvedev's quarter. Kyrgios who has enjoyed lots of success is ready to go home, and Djere is downright exhausted from Winston-Salem. Tsitsipas, who reached the finals in Cincinnati, faces an intense 16th (Tsitsipas-Galan, Sonego-Thompson, Nishioka-Davidovich Fokina, Fuscovics-Cressy) and a competitive road to the semis. Similarly, Alcaraz has a number of challenges ahead in his quarter. All the same, would not be surprised by breakthrough performances.

EDIT: Streamlined news.
