2022 Winter Olympics.

A country with 1 gold, 0 silver, 0 bronze above a country with 0 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze? Seems illogical to me.

Both approaches result in illogical listings in some capacity, but the "Add up all medals and call it a day" results in more illogical listings.

Clearly the most optimal solution here is to weigh each type of medal differently and do the math that way. But that's not as intuitive to viewers as number of gold (or total) medals, so I get why they don't do it that way.

Aside from that, counting gold medals first and sorting by that before you even get to silver medals, is a far superior method to simply adding up alllll the medals and going with that. It does benefit countries who send a lot of athletes to the games and have their medal counts spread out, VS a country that might only send a small handful of athletes who perform better (i.e. are more likely to get gold)
