25 years of Civfanatics - a retrospective

Oh yeah... I've obviously also spent... hours over hours here :D.

Wow! Thanks!

Oh, another "official" thing developed on CFC by the community was the official patch for Civ4Col. PatchMod was made by me and Sn00py here, and then published by Firaxis as the official patch.

:eek: and I thought I knew everything about this game!
I am sorry for overlooking this, will be fixed in an instant :).
EDIT: Done, also in the 30-years civ thread.
EDIT2: For the patch, I'd need a link, I've not played Col much.

Ha! From the above one would think this was was just a civ site. But it has been so much more: Off Topic, NESing, Other games, Mafia, etc.
Yes, a lot of things have happened in the forum.
If anyone would like to write something about it... ;)

That discussion is better for elsewhere ;).

This made me wonder so I went and took a look. I joined on Jan 5, 2002 - 23 years and still here! Yes, I'm part of the not very active group but I'm still here. :)
Great idea for an article! :thumbsup:

Thanks for coming back here, oldtimer :).

Here's the original PatchMod thread here: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/mod-snoopy-dale-patchmod.293253/

And the first line of the official patch notes (I verified this right now by installing the steam version of the game and opening readme.htm):

all of this is really charming. it's nuts that it's been that long.

Someone who shares my forum birthdate XD

I'm still...on-again, off-again semi-active I guess? (Which is to say, I have spurs of pretty intense activity followed by breaks when I get too bored or annoyed at a discussion. Not unique to CFC, that ; that,s me and the entire internet).

An epic read! Takes me back to those days in the early 2000s when I stumbled across the site while seeking modding resources. I'd forgotten about the funeral spambot though!
I was one of the migrants from Apolyton, along with most of the Civ2 Scenario League.

Great to see this many old-timers here :D.

Thanks, changed :thumbsup:.
And no worries, no need to double check, I believe you :).

It's one of the very weird occurences which I somehow I can't forget.
If this maybe triggered some other forgotten memories, then write them down, can add them :).

- 2008, March 6: CFC Hacked (information about this seems lost)

The hacker deleted many civ files and many/most were quickly replaced by the membership.

3/6/08

On the second of March 2008
By 2:19 it was already too late:
The hacker came cloaked and stealthy
Spying what was fun and healthy,
With tools arcane and evil grin,
Telefragged's guards were then done in;
With malicious thoughts and spiteful glee
The foul fellow went on a deleting spree:
Love's labor’s ripped from our soul
Left a tangled mess and gaping hole;
What once was fine and now's in shambles,
Was lost to hate, so now we scramble
To rebuild all with efforts fair,
A finer place for those who care,
Where kindness wins out in the end,
With the files so many quickly send.

Fascinating read, thanks for the write-up!

I'd only been here as a lurker for, I don't know, around 5 years until I finally signed up in 2014, and not exactly super active between then and 2021, so a lot of that is all new to me.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate this place for continuing to host all the stuff for the older civ games after all this time. I think the number of advanced EXE modifying / reverse engineering projects that have found a home here in the last 10 years (C3X, ToTPP, Civ2UIA, OpenCiv1 and others) show it to be a worthwhile endeavour. Here's to another 25 years, by which time we'll be on Civ XIV! (and people will be saying the sweet spot was Civs 8 through 11 :cool: )

In the early days of CivFanatics @Lefty Scaevola and @Padma were active moderators and supporters of Thunderfall; they were instrumental in developing the culture here. I took note of their activities back in October of 2008.

Lefty Scaevola, does what all right hands do:
He lurks in the shadows waiting for you;
He's the enforcer, the bringer of tears,
He's your worst nightmare, keeper of fears,
He's older than old and lives in dark places,
Few have survived, who see his stark faces,
Thunder made manifest on digital screens
He's the terror of posters still in their teens;
All power, all mighty with echoing yells,
His only weak spot--the words he misspells.

Oct 21, 2008

From high above the forum voices
A shadow lurks making choices;
His trusty basset waddles round
Sniffing air and then the ground;
Double logins and those unseen,
Trolls and flamers being mean,
"Perfect" posters are detected,
And in a flash redirected;
Few escape this duo's prowl
And once on the scent, beware the howl;
Padma knows the tricks and angles
Even participles left to dangle,
The perfect Mod this baby boomer
He even has a sense of humor.

At least one marriage bloomed here:

1/17/2008
Bozo Erectus & Mathilda:

Your two names we've seen before,
And the smiles are showing what's in store,
And how love has warped both time and space
Enough for each to find your place;
Lost souls you are to reason's call
To see, to touch, to gaze is all,
To lose yourselves you are compelled--
There is no escape from this mind meld.

(Sadly, they are no longer together, but last I heard he still lives in Finland.)

Recently we have seen frustrating slow downs in the site. But they are not the first. We had them back in the Fall of 2005 too.

11/05

Thunderfall hordes the dough
To keep this site running slow;
Sluggish forums serve him well
As patient posters here do dwell,
Waiting for some page to load
While switching out of lurker mode;
To speed it up will take real money
That he now spends on his honey;
Transparency is not for all,
Especially our god Thunderfall:
Behind the curtain over there
He's posting in his underwear.
