25 years of Civfanatics - a retrospective

I looked at the general discussion forums, specifically how recently the thread at the bottom of the front page had been posted in:
VII: Dec 15
VI: Aug 13
V: Feb 17
IV: Sep 4
III: Jun 3
II: April 25
I: May 2

So the most recent entry, VII, is the only one where the entire front page of General is from within the last month, but our gang down in IV did take second place over two newer games. :D

Although an imprecise way to measure, it does show certain trends. Also, on the Civ5 subforums Vox Populi is greatly more active than General Discussions, Rhye's and Fall is such on the Civ4 subforums, and the Scenario League on the Civ2 subforums.

I’m always vaguely surprised when I notice that the site features games other than Civ III.
I think you might be alone there.

Hardly - by the metric above, Civ3's C&C (a community unto itself) is the most active of the series
I meant his more coy jab, specifically.

incidentally ı started playing the Rood classic thing about a full month ago . Will have a post about YOUR vile tricks when ı find the time to handle those hundreds of Norsemen and Danes landing on my beloved Ireland .

I stumbled upon some old news from September of 2001 today, which might be of interest for forum historians, as it answers the question of, "when did we move to vBulletin?"

Going farther back in time, to October 25, 2000, I found the news announcement about the opening of the UBB forum:

So, it's clear that 25 years before this thread was created, the CivFanatics forums were not considered to be new, just the UBB version, and there was a forum before that, which indeed it seems was deleted.

I have not yet found any traces of the pre-UBB forums. However, I thought it might be a good idea to preserve a screenshot of the Internet Archive's first snapshot of the UBB forums, which is from February 3, 2001:

Only 555 members at that time - now we have over 300,000!

On the topic of civ retrospective threads, today I found the retrospective thread from 2002. While both it and this thread have congratulatory posts, they were far more common in 2002 - the forum was new, so its survival was notable, there wasn't a lot of "ancient history" yet, and there were already people who were spending lots of time here.

Were there 5, 10, or other-year retrospectives? Perhaps we will find some at some point.

Lovely job on pulling together the history of CFC!
