Welcome to the 6otM14 Opening Actions thread.

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed at least 80 to 100 turns in your game.

This thread is used to discuss the game once you've started playing through your first 100 turns. Apart from normal decency, the only posting restrictions are to please not post videos until the deadline is finished and to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. Please remember that we are running a family friendly site, so express anger or frustration with this in mind. :)

Please use this thread to discuss your goals for the game and your opening moves through the first 100 turns. Anything after that should be posted in the After Actions thread once you have completed your game.

Took a break from Civ6 for a month or so and decided to try out the new patch with this GoTM. Really enjoying the TSL Earth map so far.

- Where did you settle your capital city? Your second city?
1 tile NW. My second city was captured Madrid and then I settled Ephesus around where Moscow irl should be.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
I just followed eurekas I had. I actively pursued eurekas for Archery, Machinery and Shipbuilding.

- What was your build order?
Scout, 3 Slingers, Warrior. I continued pushing units out because Spain DoW'd me early.

- Were there any early wars? Did you start them?
Yup. As I said, Phillip attacked me, don't know why. He shouldn't have done that because I quickly disposed of him. Then I DoW'd Gandhi to capture his worker with my scout, but there wasn't any combat and we soon made peace.

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
My first district was a Holy Site in Madrid. Apart from that, I actually still don't have any other districts. I'm building them right now.

- Did you try to build any Wonders?
Nope.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Yeah, after capturing Madrid I founded two of my own cities in Europe and then I captured Carthage. They were just in the way. Currently preparing for an invasion of Egypt and then Sumeria and India.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
I switched cards a lot. Went with Oligarchy. When fighting barbs I took Discipline, then switched to Conscription. Also took Urban Planning, Charismatic Leader, Inspiration and Revelation, then switched to Strategos after acquiring Great Prophet. While building my ships I took Maritime Industries.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?

I met Seoul, Hattusa, Hong Kong, Kumasi, Kabul and Carthage. Hattusa is my ally. Also cultivated Carthage...by force. :D

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Phillip wasn't, but I think others don't dare do anything because I lead in military strength by far. Sumeria and Egypt were at war for some time, but nothing much came out of it.

- How were the Barbarians?
Quite a lot of them, but I dealt with them swiftly.

- Any surprises?
Not really, just enjoying the map so far. I hope we re-visit the TSL Earth map in the future. :)

Settled in place. I don’t want mountain spots limiting my production at the start. I moved a settler west – hoping not too many AI there to stop me

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Sailing – Mining – Archery - Astrology

- What was your build order?
Slinger – Worker – Slinger – Settler – Slinger – Slinger – Slinger – Holy Site

- Were there any early wars? Did you start them?
Yes. I know Spain will have an early religion. After archers upgrade, dispatched him in a 9 turn war while my first city was building the Holy Site and doing Prayers for an early religion. City 2 was worker and settlers production

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
After a settler and archer upgrades, made the Holy Site near the mountains to the north of the cap

- Did you try to build any Wonders?
Nope.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Yes. I prioritized cities in Eastern Europe. Think St. Petersburg, Ukraine, Serbia. Anything to cut the Carthage off

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
Nothing out of the ordinary. Prioritized cheap ranged units, cheap spaces to purchase. Went to monarchy as fast as I could

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?

Don’t remember. I keep City States alive hoping I’ll be their Suzerain. When I lack influence, I take them out if they help the AI

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
They were until late. But then I had field cannons and knights. I plan on rolling over anything that wasn’t taking on my religion. Egypt towards Japan.

- How were the Barbarians?
Archers tear up Barbs.

- Any surprises?
The map is awesome. I hate playing for religion. It’s more of a Domination game with some missionaries thrown out there

A few turns past the 100 mark and I just realized something went badly wrong. My two most recent missionaries reached the lands of Kongo. When I converted people in one of their cities it turned out my missionary was spreading Hinduism, India's religion. I tried to understand and I noticed that Athens, my holy city, was converted to Hinduism. So that is what all those Indian missionaries that I was not paying attention to where doing over there...

At the moment I can not spread my religion because I can not buy missionaries of the right kind. I suppose that's because my religion has no majority in any of my cities. Is there a way out of that situation? Will my holy city slowly convert back to the state religion for example? At the moment another city with no majority religion is building the Mahabodhi temple. That should award two apostles. I really wonder what their religious persuasion will be. Perhaps I should wait finishing it?

Anyway.. I have five cities now, among which Madrid, the only city of the late Spanish empire. I am now aiming my forces at Gandhi. He really is extremely annoying in this game.

Other info: Settled in place. Started with monument, then builder, then settler.

Pericles turn 101. I settled in place and built slinger/worker/slinger/settler. I rushed two additional settlers to populate the surprisingly empty territory of W Europe and conquered Spain (Madrid only city) with archers and a warrior.
The free wildcard slot allowed me to use the +2 GP points to speed up religion founding whilst building a Holy Site, I took +1 sea production as Pantheon (none of the Faith pantheons seemed worthwhile) then founded Eastern Orthodoxy with boost to Missionary/Apostle production and +1 amenity for districts (there are very few types of luxury in my sphere of control). I then conquered Carthage for ivory and free sea movement through the Med.
I am best friends with Sumeria but India (my main Religious foe) and Egypt have just made a joint DoW against me. My plan is to conquer Egypt (another religion founder) and spread my Faith to Kongo before religious war against India. One of my exploring units has just reached the Pacific and met Japan, so it appears that the final AI (and religion) lie in the New World. I am building up my Faith production and may evangelize an Apostle for +1 spread (Mosques?) and take a punt for Hagia Sophia. Amenites may become an issue so will look out for a luxurious spot to settle an extra city. Looking hard for a religious CS.
