Domination victory: Turn 170. Score 1506
- Did you play super hide bonus? How did the shuffle/unknown impact your play?
I didn't bother with the super hide, I have the display of known people shown, but I didn't go looking for anything else. The map was quite interesting as a one continent, I wasn't expecting that at all.

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
Domination. Crush my enemies with hordes of horses and trample them underfoot!
The game went pretty much as I hoped.
Vietnam who I met early on are so very tough. But they tried to take Mohenjo-Daro and got kicked badly and repulsed. Mohen destroyed the Vietnam 2nd city!, It them left them weak enough that I could roll over them before the recovered. Captured an unescorted settler, ha!
I like to wipe civ's out, it stops them complaining and no fear of them recovering.
Vietnam, was first
then north for Amanitor so many mines, so much pillaging wow, awesome
then west for Gitaraja - who got walls up in like 2 turns everywhere made that a bit of a slog.
launched 1/2 my army west over the ocean, what a waste that was to be!
The rest swept back south and east for Robert and then Joao (when my water launched armada arrived)
The final two, I just went for the capitols. Harald was easy and Matthias who was really tough, but I had so many cavalry I just rode past his big cities and encampments to take his capito which was unwalled!

- What were your initial 5-10 builds in the capital or other early cities?

Warrior, Slinger, Settler. Warrior, Archer. Warrior. Some ships for scouting.
Settled in place and tried to build up military as fast as possible.

- Early order for technology/civics? What did you prioritize for technology/civics?
The early cultural is towards political philosophy as ever, taking the path of eurekas, but craftsmen and militry tradition for the production cards.
Horses and horseback riding were my first focus'. Sailing and then Iron. Then science a bit.
Aim for Encampments and Ordu to churn out horse warriors of whatever type I could.

- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
It was great, everything powered up the army. I captured quite a few enemy horses when I started fighting them, every time that happened it felt good.
Keshig were awesome, in the end 4 promoted Keshig with 5 or 6 move from generals and 2 attacks owned walled cities tearing them down efficiently.
I aimed to get a trade with everyone for the diplo (and combat) bonus, sure it will get broken, but who cares!

- How many cities did you settle and/or capture? Where did you settle your first few cities?
Founded 7, conquered 29.
Settled in place, then founded east, then west, then north coast
Found a sub-continent to the south, so I ended up sending a settler there to the middle to capture some nice resources. Very handy.

- What were key production/purchase focuses? Military units / Civilian units / Districts & city development / Wonders / Civ Unique Unit & Infrastructure? Most critical or interesting?
Government Plaza with Warlords throne. The 20% boost was really important to keep things running.
Terracotta army after I had loads of 3 promoted units. Awesome. I had like 10 things all advanced to level 4 and double attacks.

- Pantheon chosen and why? Religious beliefs chosen, and why?
I ignored Religion once I had a pantheon: God of craftsmen for the production and fait boost from Strategiss. I think others would have been better with so many resources available though.

- What governments did you select? What key policy cards did you use? Why?
Oligarchy, that +4 combat and 20% bonus were so important.
then it was up to monarchy and finally theocracy for the discount.

- Which Governors were most important; when and why?
All of them! Well Amani and Magnus were the first two. With Amani getting me Kabul for the double combat XP bonus. I moved her a few times to boost and conquer city states as I needed. Magnus for the double yields is always powerful, but on this map with all the resources, he was awesome.
I had a 3 promoted liang to shield my volcano city in the Bayuda desert, stopped quite a few eruptions for wiping stuff
2 promoted victor was VERY handy for bolstering loyalty on the attack. I moved lots of governors around in my wars to keep cities loyal.

- Was diplomacy/trading useful? How? Relations with other civs?
Only for the combat bonus, my military after the ancient era was always dominant so nobody attacked me, sure they denounced me, but that meant no more surprise wars, better for me.
As ever a warmonger is hated, and the diplomacy game is irrelevant. World votes happen, I have 1 vote for each of 2 things, pretty irrelevant no chance of affecting the outcome.

- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
Golden ages were important, I missed the first one, there weren't the points available. The rest were golden - monumentality gave me a use for faith the get settlers and builders, and in the end military units after Grand Masters Chapel was built in the Government Plaza. I blew past the required points once the conquest was rolling.

- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?
No

- Any surprises/frustration/elations you ran into, how did you deal with it?
Mohenjoo-Daro took out a vietnam city after repulsing the early vietnam attack. Astonishing!
I founded a city in the desert with a captured settler - it was that or lose the settler, became my petra city in the end. fun!

- Did you enjoy your game?
Very much so. I like domination games. Emperor was a fun level to play at!

Dom Vic, turn 167.

Fun to read about Tarry's game, as mine went very differently. Founded 4 cities, then went to war with Vietnam with 5 horsemen. Was able to eliminate Vietnam, but Nubia already had walls and Indonesia seemed far away. So sent my horsemen east and found Scotland. Tried to attack and also levied Authayya, but Stirling and another major city both got up walls the turn before they would have been taken. If that had happened this game could have been shorter.

Ended up building an army of trebuchets and knights to be rid of Nubia, which then travelled and also conquered Scotland as bombards and cuirassiers.

But most civs were actually conquered by sea, despite this being Mongolia! Built about 5 galleys and got to caravels fast; then got the admiral that forms a fleet. But once again made a major mistake- sent all my ships east, where they took the Norwegian capital and another major city, but then couldn't go any further, so they literally had to go all the way back west and then across the western ocean to get to Portugal and Hungary, picking up two frigates on the way, and stopping long enough to take Majapahit. So 4 out of 7 civs conquered by the Mongolian navy.

Some points of interest:
the Vietnamese capital (Thang Long) was vastly more productive than the Mongolian capital in the end;
only built a single Keshig- missed out on this as I relied on conventional siege units;
only captured a single cavalry unit, as virtually every civ built a lot of melee and siege units but saw very, very few cavalry;
built the Government Plaza very late, just for governor titles really. Should have done it earlier to get more use out of Warlord's throne.
helped a lot by a Free Inquiry Golden Medieval to boost my science, which I otherwise didn't pay too much attention to beyond just getting to the relevant military units.
only built two Wonders- Artemis and Great Bath.
Built no encampments, but captured one early in Thang Long.
Great Admirals and Great Generals were invaluable.

I played the game blind, with no yield ribbon but found it didn't matter much. In fact I think it helped in a way- I wasn't scared off from attacking civs by some inflated military score number. I didn't ever see the map type but I guess there is no way to avoid seeing the number of civs- I checked the counter once to see how much Era Score I needed to reach Golden, and the number of civs is apparent, including civs not yet met.

But still a really fun game- hope to see more like this!

Religious victory, turn 168 score: 475

- Did you play super hide bonus? How did the shuffle/unknown impact your play?
I played with the super hide bonus. I play a lot of shuffle maps already so I didn't mind that aspect. The unknown was also fine in this context because the stats of other civs didn't really matter much for my VC.

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
I planned to go religion from the start because I'm absolutely terrible at domination. My basic plan was to get holy sites + religion as fast as possible, get theology for mahabodhi temple + apostles to pick up the belief giving you +2 faith per city converted, promote moksha until apostles got an extra promotion, and then spam apostles everywhere.

- What were your initial 5-10 builds in the capital or other early cities?
Honestly I can't exactly remember, but something like scout, scout, holy site, settler, holy site prayers x3, (purchased shrine), settler, monument

- Early order for technology/civics? What did you prioritize for technology/civics?
I researched astrology first for the holy site asap, and then pottery -> irrigation to get the citrus online. I think I then worked towards shipbuilding so my apostles and missionaries could embark. After that I picked up currency (bc I forgot about harbours lmao), apprenticeship for extra production from mines, horseback riding for the UU (for era score) and then printing for the extra level of visibility.

As for civics I beelined political philosophy (for autocracy for mahabodhi) and then theology to unlock mahabodhi itself. I then worked towards reformed church for theology.

- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
The diplomatic visibility bonus would have theoretically been helpful fighting other religious units, but sadly most civs did not produce a lot of apostles or even missionaries and i didnt get to make full use of this ability.

- How many cities did you settle and/or capture? Where did you settle your first few cities?
I settled 3 cities and captured none. My second city was on the coast to the north and my third was a few tiles to the east.

- What were key production/purchase focuses? Military units / Civilian units / Districts & city development / Wonders / Civ Unique Unit & Infrastructure? Most critical or interesting?
Apostles were obviously very important for my VC. I also built holy sites and mahabodhi temple asap, followed by commercial hubs (bc im an idiot) for the extra trade route capacity. Nothing else I built mattered that much.

- Pantheon chosen and why? Religious beliefs chosen, and why?
Thanks to a lucky tribal village I got one of the first pantheons. I chose extra culture from plantations to get to political philosophy and theology faster. I chose feed the world for my main religious belief, followed by the one which makes missionaries and apostles 30% off. After I built mahabodhi I adopted the +2 faith per converted city belief and mosques for the additional spread.

- What governments did you select? What key policy cards did you use? Why?
I selected autocracy and then theology for the wonder building bonus and faith discount respectively. Honestly none of the policy cards ended up being particularly important.

- Which Governors were most important; when and why?
I first went pingala into connisseur for as much early culture as possible. I then grabbed moksha so I could beeline the title giving religious units and extra promotion.

- Was diplomacy/trading useful? How? Relations with other civs?
I was a declared friend of every civ except for norway and hungrary, who denounced me for converting their cities. I made a religious alliance with nubia just to get the boost for diplomatic service. Diplo favour was pretty useful to vote down religious emergencies (and to sell to the AI for large amounts of gold)

- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
I got a normal age in the classical era, followed by a golden medieval and renaissance (I picked exodus both times)

- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?
Not having heroes and legends, secret societies or barbarian clans enabled was a bit annoying. The extra yields from industries were nice.

- Any surprises/frustration/elations you ran into, how did you deal with it?
nubia absolutely demolished vietnam with patiti archers on something like turn 10, completely removing vietnam from the game. I have never, ever seen the AI eliminate another civ entirely in 500 hours of playing, so I was shocked and impressed by this. unfortunately nubia also used her military might to raze yerevan, which was highly annoying but honestly didnt make that much of a difference in the end.

- Did you enjoy your game?
Yep, it was short and sweet due to only having three cities and not having much to do during each turn. I also just quite like religious victories im ngl

Console player here so only playing along in spirit. Turn 312 Culture Victory. For some reason I cannot win domination, it always turns into a culture victory. I was one turn away from capturing the last capitol, and the culture victory popped. I don't really understand it. The whole world hates me, but for some reason they love to visit!

Anyways, I didn't see a religious victory being viable for GK, there's no reliable source of faith. Pushing early horses is definitely strong. Anyways, this was a fun variant! Would love to see some more interesting options come up like this.

I'll be trying out this GOTM on stream. Stop by to watch or give advice. Emperor is a higher difficulty than I am used to.

I kept the banners with resources up, the game just feels uncomfortable without knowing your opponent resources (even though it doesn't really make that much of a difference ;))
Also, I did not manage to keep the players count a secret, as the Golden/Dark Age system kind of spoils it.

Otherwise, not knowing the kind of map really influenced my game, as I had no idea whether to build ships and beeline cartography or not. So I decided to build both a strong navy and a strong standing army, and it actually turned out amazingly well.

Thanks for a cool game!

DV T99

I recall being quite interested in exploring the different HM executions with Genghis Khan back in the day, decided to give this one a go.

<T55 (Ancient Era)

- So it's quite clear the optimal 6HM ~T50 opening is not viable given the coastal start and we have only 4 wood tiles + 1 stone to chop.
- My tech was AH-Sailing-BW-Masonry-HR. Again, not ideal but worked out well to get the Eureka's.
- Build order: Scout-(Scout from TV)-Slinger-Settler-Builder
- With limited chopping, (1 - GP, 1 - encampment) I ended up with an initial 4HM army at T56-57. Ordu built for the second army.
- Hiring Amani to Mohenjo-Daro for the housing bonus is tempting, being first to meet them, but we cannot delay promoting Magnus to chop the first HM army.
- Initially I had the thought of grabbing Kandy early and hope to secure a relic for a quick gold profit and early help for FP with monumentality, but Vietnam was quick to become their ally.
- Pantheon: Goddess of Festivals to help with mid-game culture. This ended up playing out really well as we were lagging behind culture all of early game.
- Secured a Golden Age quite easily, thanks to finding 2 WW, meeting Civs and being the first to find a new continent with our galley.

>T55 (Classica Era)

- Nubia declared on Vietnam 1 turn before I did. When left with one city, Nubia's HM "stole" it from me, but ended up working out for the better, because they raised it - giving
us no penalties to continue trading with other Civs and declaring on Nubia.
- 2 scouts early allowed us to reveal what to plan for, although I was anticipating building harbors early on.
- 4+2HM army to clear the North/North-West. Did not encounter any walls except the last city.
- 4+2+2+2HM with gradual reinforcements to take out the 2 Faith CS and continue with the conquest East.
- Rushing Castles
- Ideally you want to get enough hammers to 2turn HMs from capital without the policy card, the citrus industry helped speed this up; and Chop in more HMs as Magnus gets rotated.
- I stole a settler from Norway, allowing a deep settle towards Hungary around T70. Settled near good chops to get 3 HC -> knights before losing it to loyalty.
- I opted to hard build Apadana, with the intent to levy Buenos Aires units to take out Hungary. This ended up being quite unnecessary and a waste of production.
- Pyramids in Kawa, Temple of Artemis in Vietnam's capital.
- Great game, had a lot of fun, the 3 Knight army was crucial to secure a <T100 win. Was a nice surprise that Matthias built a lot of HC.
- Was slowed down by Norway crossing the middle choke point.

So I am not quite clear .. do you not lose Örtoo when taking a city where you established a trading post? Was this changed in GS?

One of my first ever Emperor games.

I was behind in tech for most of the game, and only caught up because of pillaging and espionage. It was a turn-by-turn race for a science victory with Robert launching 20 turns before me, but my Lagranges getting me there first. A fun game!

Domination Victory, turn 183, score 1098

After a couple of months looking at those games, I finally finished one so glad to join and hopefully I will take part again and improve along the way :)

- Did you play super hide bonus? How did the shuffle/unknown impact your play?

I did not play with it. Shuffle did not impact me too much, even though I was not sure I would not need sea power, I took the risk to not focus on the sea anyway and it paid off since all civs were on the same continent anyway.

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?

I usually don't like playing domination so it was almost a first for me. I wanted to take out my nearest neighbor before HM and then keep going, almost changed plan when I realised it was Vietnam and they had wood/jungle everywhere around them but then they went at war with Nubia and Mohenjo so I rushed in and got the capital.
Took about ten turns to pause, get more HC + Mohenjo&Nazgarmu suzerainty and then went after Nubia who rewarded me with lots of gold pillaging and a couple of good cities. They had taken Kaboul with wall and encampment which slowed me a bit, decided to liberate it to get the suzerain bonus which proved very useful.
Went after Gitarja directly after, getting Knights, Keshigs and Trebuchets during that attack. She did not last too long though she had a couple of walls.
I then paused for a few turns to redeploy to the east and set up trading roads with everyone. Got Scotland, Norway and Hungary without stopping. Interestingly, I did not need to go after Portugal since Hungary had captured their capital earlier on. I finished by capturing Lisbon and Buda on the same turn.

Looking at other recaps, I think I was probably a bit too cautious on my first conquests, I may not have needed to pause as much and should have just kept going, it could have saved me 10-15 turns. Probably something to remember in next domination games (at least on Emperor or below). Also I don't know how to use chopping effectively (except when I am rushing wonders), did not use it once this game...

- What were your initial 5-10 builds in the capital or other early cities?

Slinger x 3, Warrior, Settler, Builder, Trader, Warrior or something like that
Never usually get a Scout, maybe I should have. A Golden Classic Age could have been useful and I would have known more about the other players earlier on (I think I met Hungary at turn 100).

- Early order for technology/civics? What did you prioritize for technology/civics?
AH, mining, pottery, irrigation, iron working, HM. Wanted to beeline Printing and Stirrups, then just went for military units techs.

- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
Ordoo is great, it makes for a very enjoyable game with large combat advantages and a fast army. Only frustration is I think I only captured 1 HM all game, enemies did not really train horse units...

- How many cities did you settle and/or capture? Where did you settle your first few cities?
Settled 3 cities including the capital. One to the coast north and another along the coast southeast using a Vietnamese settler. Lost a captured settler to Nazgarmu as well, that was a bit stupid.
Then I kept about 2/3 of the cities I got. Mainly used the two vietnamese ones for units and the others for tech and money.

- What were key production/purchase focuses? Military units / Civilian units / Districts & city development / Wonders / Civ Unique Unit & Infrastructure? Most critical or interesting?
The army that rolled on the eastern part of the map was Knights supported by Bombards and three Keshigs. It may have been a bit overkill, actually finished with a couple of artillery (definitely overkill) and about 10 cuirassiers.
My main districts where encampments + trading quarters, got campuses from my conquests and science from pillaging. I was lagging a bit in culture after midgame but I had managed to grab Oligarchy and then Feudalism/Monarchy fast enough

- Pantheon chosen and why? Religious beliefs chosen, and why?
Crafting for the bonus on strategic resource, was a nice help at the beginning. Did not try for a religion at all.
- What governments did you select? What key policy cards did you use? Why?
Oligarchy > Monarchy

- Which Governors were most important; when and why?
Pingala to help with science/culture, Armani to get a few suzerainship before going to war with the previous suzerain and Victor to stabilize ongoing conquests.

- Was diplomacy/trading useful? How? Relations with other civs?
Got me some money and obviously useful to make the most of Ordoo.

- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
Normal classical and then I think I went all golden (or maybe normal Medieval)
- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?
The citrus bonus was nice for the capital, otherwise not so much.
- Any surprises/frustration/elations you ran into, how did you deal with it?
Losing that settler to Nazgarmu and becoming their suzerain the next turn was funny ^^

- Did you enjoy your game?
Very much so, I always find Domination Games tedious with all the micro management and too large empires so I generally don't finish them but I had a lot of fun on this one!
Being ahead on science thanks to pillaging and captured campus helped a lot since I always had units that were more than enough to tear down the few walls I encountered

DV T196. Taking almost every city was slow due to walls and having to pound them down with keshigs/CBs. Only bothered to build 2 siege units for my other army. Frigates were also quite important for some coastal civs.

Domination Victory, T121, Score 904, 15 h

Plan
The map seemed some kind of small island or strangely shaped continent, so I went for an early navy with to Galleys to explore the map. But as my scout started to find more and more civs, I went ahead after horsemen and they were all I needed in the end.

Early game
For the initial 100 turns the victory was already set with my cavalry swarming the continent. The early focus was to explore and find where the enemies where hiding, with a scout and galleys when I could. Then find horses, then research horsemen technology. While waiting for Horseback Ridding, I built a couple encampments, and then two Ordus while waiting for the 50% chavalry discount card.

By T100 I had already defeated Ba Trieu, Amanitore and Gitarja, and was moving new and old armies to the west.
Captura de pantalla de 2022-10-16 19-58-23.png

Religion
Pantheon: God of Craftsmen for extra early production.
Did not bother to look for a religion.

Wonders
Not a big role in my game, I built the Oracle to faith-buy a couple Almirants (I had no Celestial Navigation to earn points normally), the Pyramids for extra build charges (which worked quite good as I saved the captured builders with 1 build until the wonder was completed), the Great Library to help with research which I should have totally skipped, and the Alhambra which was nice for an extra military card, but played no role as I finished it only three turns before victory.

I do not remember using any Natural Wonder.

Diplomacy and War
Matthias and Harald were declared friends until a few turns before I had to fight them to win. I never gave a Delegation access to my country.

When I found Ba Trieu next to me and in the jungle I was almost at the point of quitting, for I thought she would be just to bothersome to fight. But I decided to give it a try in the end. The war with her begun a bit earlier than I had planned in T55, when a slinger had her fourth settler nearby for an easy capture. This war was mainly made with warrior and archers, half of them from Mohenjo-Daro, which was very helpful with the housing bonus as well, but a couple of horsemen arrived in the end to accelerate the capture of the cities. First horsemen was T62.

Before I had finished Ba Trieu, I begun fighting Amanitore at T71 when a settler was alto looking for some space to grab. The horsemen and archers easily took her down, except for her last city who managed to build walls, and I decided to spare. Sparing the walls city let me to focus on Gitarja who fell in T94.

While fighting Gitarja, the new horsemen were directed to the east where I levied Ayutthaya (T74) to fight Robert and get some extra Era Score. Robert had some real army, with catapults and men-at-arms, but some tactical retreats and archer-bombing managed the situation until horsemen started to arrive to the front and turn the tide. His capital, Stirling, fell in T104 and the rest of the game was a walk. Or should I say gallop?

Only one AI build walls, Matthias, which made the rest of the countries easy picks. Harald had an astonishing army, but he had no Cartography, so my single Quadrireme bombed them from the ocean, and ended finding a path to help capture Nidaros in T113. Lisbon was cherry-picked and conquered in T117 while my horsemen, upgraded to coursers, sneaked through Matthias cities to hard work on the walls of his capital until they fall in T121.
Captura de pantalla de 2022-10-18 01-05-20.png

Monopolies
Greatly ignored in this game, although I looked for luxuries when nearby, as Happiness was a real negative at some point.

Barbarians
Only problem was a navy encampment in the SW island that blocked my galleys in their exploration to the East. In the end I levied Hattusa to end them and also collect a bunch of Village goodies.

Final state
Only ever build 1 settler, conquered 26 cities and received 1 thanks to loyalty flip. In the end main strategy was the three cities with encampments (my two initial and one from Ba Trieu), pumping light chavalry for almost all the game, while the conquered cities focused in Commercial Hubs/Markets to maintain the economy, and Builders/Entertainment complexes to reduce the unhappiness as much as possible.

An interesting thing that happened in my game was the other leaders voted to make chavalry a +5 strength in the Congress, even though I had 0 diplomatic favor to influence the vote!

A great and interesting map. Cavalry is extremely powerful when the AI does not build walls. Thanks a lot for the game!

Victory turn/method186/Domination

What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
  • We gotta go horses domination, right? Be rude not to. Not even going to try for religion.
  • Encampments for production and unique stables.
  • Don’t accept any embassies, use trading routes for early advantage.
  • Emperor so should be able to keep up with science better than usual Diety.
  • Encampment/campus/commercial going to be key districts.
  • Be on the look out for industries/monopolies.
  • Keep it pretty open otherwise, don’t know anything about the map.
I eventually ended up splitting my forces and attacking multiple civs simultaneously once I realised I had over built and was way ahead.

Started taking out Vietnam, then north into Nubia whom I accidentally completely eliminated – their capital flipped to free city and I didn’t realise that would end them. Not that it mattered. Embarked my army to strike straight into Indonesian capital (only took two cities), then from there headed W to Hungary and Portugal while sending a second force into Scotland for the N while a Levy’d military attacked them from the S.

Ended up with a bit of gold problem start of Medieval era only had 8GPT. Probably overcorrected, was up to 119GPT by Renaissance though.

What went well?
  • Generally stuck to overall strategy, though switched to swords once AI started getting walls.
  • Early horses to take out Vietnam.
  • Each era planned pretty well (not withstanding the below lessons), but it was also a straightforward game to plan.
  • Did better than I usually do managing my research & civic boosts.

What could have been better / what did I learn?
  • In general, was overly cautious. Some of that was being used to Diety, some of that was just not being particularly familiar with Domination victories and combat before jet bombers.
  • Over-built infrastructure. I underestimated not only my own technical advantage, but the +6/+12 bonus from diplomatic vision pretty much counts for a full tech level. Could have started just building units much earlier and shaved a heap of turns off.
  • Didn’t scout early enough, didn’t find Norway’s capital and also wasn’t aware just how weak Norway/Portugal/Hungary were. Could have attacked much earlier.
  • Assumed AI would just have walls everywhere, but they really didn’t. Could have made more progress through non-protected cities earlier.
  • Over-valued science in the player strip. Thought I was on-par with Scotland and so held off attacking, but I would have steam rolled them.
  • Didn’t consider naval option until way too late, didn’t realise frigates do siege damage to cities.
  • Worried too much about amenities/happiness.
  • Over-valued corporations/monopolies, and so invested too much energy into them. Pendulum swing from last game where I didn’t realise how powerful they were (specifically in a culture victory though.)
  • Pay more attention to loyalty on first settle, really important that 2nd city is productive.
  • After reading someone elses’ report, realising I probably don’t chop anywhere near enough.

What were your initial 5-10 builds in the capital or other early cities?
T6: Scout finished
T11: Scout finished
T?: Builder
T25: Settler (with chop)
T25: Bought monument
T29: 2nd city founded. Somewhat aggressively close to Vietnam, end up having loyalty issues that turned it into a dead city for about 20 turns.
T38: 3rd city founded.

Early order for technology/civics? What did you prioritize for technology/civics?
Animal Husbandary to reveal horses. Went to Horseback Riding with a short detour through Irrigation since heap of tiles to improve with that.

How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
The +6 diplo bonus was amazing and I made full use of it with the trading post bonus. In hindsight, could have been more aggressive using it.
Unique stables and keshig I only used for era score.
Didn’t manage to capture ANY horses :( :( :(

How many cities did you settle and/or capture? Where did you settle your first few cities?
Settled maybe 6-ish, captured the rest (27 total). First cities were E then N:

Pantheon chosen and why? Religious beliefs chosen, and why?
T42 Pantheon, took City Patron (25% discount when no district). Didn’t really think anything sounded that strong so thought I’d try this one. Don’t know if I really noticed it much. Not sure what else I would have taken though. Didn’t go for religion at all.

When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
First was normal, every other was Golden and I way overshot them.

Did you enjoy your game?
Yep! Gave me a new appreciation for Domination, and I enjoyed playing on a lower difficulty level that didn’t come with the crushing dread of being behind for so long. (I pretty much felt I had this in the bag after the first 50 turns.)

Domination Victory - turn 234, Score 1765

- Did you play super hide bonus? How did the shuffle/unknown impact your play?
I did not play super hide bonus. The shuffle / unknown made me a bit cautious to open. I really should have scouted out the Eastern part of the map more, but once I was fighting Namibia I shifted my focus to crushing her to get to the snowball.

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
I knew I'd be going Domination out of the gate. Crush the nearest neighbor, move right on to the next, and start leveling units up. Once I saw it was Vietnam I knew I wanted to get to them before they got their Vai Chein. I did try and push right through on Namibia and spread my horsemen out a bit. I lost a few of them, had to rebuild an army but then after that it was smooth sailing. . Crush the nearest neighbor, move right on to the next, and start leveling units up.

- What were your initial 5-10 builds in the capital or other early cities?
This was my first time playing the game of the month so I didn't write this down. I ended up getting 3 cities down pretty quick then took the rest of the world.

- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
This was my first play through of Mongolia. I tried to get trading posts and spies to get me the visibility bonus. This really took place on the 3 people to the East. I also got tons of encampments and Ordos up. Those helped as I had great generals throughout the ages.

- How many cities did you settle and/or capture? Where did you settle your first few cities?
I think I only settled 5 or 6 cities. I put down 3 initial cities, and then the rest were to get strategic resources.

- What were key production/purchase focuses? Military units / Civilian units / Districts & city development / Wonders / Civ Unique Unit & Infrastructure? Most critical or interesting?
Kilwa was really my only must have. There were plenty of city states and I was Suze of most of them.

- Was diplomacy/trading useful? How? Relations with other civs?
I kept the people to the west open for trades through most of the game. Norway was a great friend.... until it was time to take their capital and well... all the rest of their cities.

- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
I took a dark age in classical era and rolled into golden ages for the rest of the game.

- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?

This was my first time playing monopolies and corporations. It was fine. I'm sure I could have done more with it but I just ended up making some corporations and calling it good. I never did make a monopoly or a product.

- Did you enjoy your game?

That game was a lot of fun. I tend to play domination the most so had a lot of fun playing such a war-focused civ. I'll be back for another one. I didn't really focus on closing out the game as fast as possible. Some of your replies made me rethink what I could have done differently.
