    Welcome to the 6otM81 Opening Actions thread.

    STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed at least 80 to 100 turns in your game.

    This thread is used to discuss the game once you've started playing through your first 100 turns. Apart from normal decency, the only posting restrictions are to please not post videos until the deadline is finished and to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. Please remember that we are running a family friendly site, so express anger or frustration with this in mind. :)

    Please use this thread to discuss your goals for the game and your opening moves through the first 100 turns. Anything after that should be posted in the After Actions thread once you have completed your game.

    - How long did you search for a site for your first city? What criteria did you use?
    - Where did you settle your capital city? Your second city?

    Spoiler Ancient Era T1-44 :

    Early Strategy:
    1) After moving the warrior 1W, I decided to settle on the wine so I could place another city 4W. Debated this do to the loss of being on coast vs +3 food luxury capital square.
    2) Failed this: Focus on 3 quick cities with one production build and one from pantheon. To try this, I started working the faith tile on T8-25 (as soon as borders expanded) and took God King on T14-36. On T25 I got a pantheon, but religious settlements were gone. This focus cost me >50 production and slowed my first settler vs. working other tiles (and taking UP), so a failed gamble. I ended the ancient era with 2 cities. Would have been better to focus production, but the faith tile was too tempting - curses Leif for his evil ways . Slow start will make this game tougher, but that’s part of the fun.
    3) Try for Dark Age instead of pushing for Golden, so was thinking I could skimp on military since I would avoid killing barbarian camps.
    4) Barbarians!! Barb encampment N on T13 get Scout with “!” on T16, Barb encampment S on T18 which my warrior eliminated as I didn’t want to be surrounded. Had to switch to military to survive/clear. I’m so used to AI civ’s clearing barb on deity that I forgot about the map type.
    5) Both builders used 2 charges each and then became sea explorers.

    (1E on wine): 6-Buy Tile(2W), 7-Scout, 21-Settler, 25/26- Builder (one from Pantheon), 30-Slinger, 37-Monument, 40/42-Warrior, 44-Slinger
    25-Sendai (4W): 25-Buy Tile (turtles), ?-Monument, 43-Granary(g)
    Districts: chopped forest for future Kyoto Campus placement and started Sendai Campus

    Science: AH, Mining, Pottery, Writing, Sailing, BW
    Culture & Policies: 14-COL (Sur/GK), 36-FT (Dis/UP), 37-Craft(Agoge/UP), 43-EE,44-(Dis/UP)
    Governors: 43-Liang

    Military: 3 warriors, 2 slingers, 1 scout
    Diplomacy: 42-Australia (42-delegation, 44-OB)
    Trading: trade Australia 2 resources for 8g/t
    City States: met Bologna (2 envoys) & Zanzibar (1 envoy)
    Religion: 25 – Pantheon Fertility Rights (wanted 2 builders for exploration, but needed to focus on military; also faster to size 10 cities for future rationalism policy)

    Classic Strategy:

    1) Explore and expand after the slow start. Now at 6 cities but didn’t get my third one until T69.
    2) Push science to Mil Tac to start building military.

    Diplomacy: I’ve met everyone; delegation & OB to all; Declared Friends with France, China, & Poland
    Trading: 83g/t from deals; trading all luxury (still ecstatic cities from Suz) & all Dip Favor (generally in sets of 10 or so)
    City States: I’ve met 9/12, Suz of Bologna & Zanzibar
    Religion: didn’t try; no further focus – just built the quick HS for quests
    Wonders: None
    Era Score: 47/34


    Spoiler Medieval Era to T100 :

    HEROIC AGE (Monumentality, Free Inquiry, PB&V)
    Medieval Strategy:

    1) Military Expansion: Make Alliances; Get ready for first war with Samurai; Trade for Iron/Horses & get Black Marketeer
    2) Focus on Sc/Cul boosts; harbors/comm hubs first in cities for Free Inquiry

    World Congress: World voted for Military Companies (-50% production cost of units) and Military Advisors (+5 str to melee units); I had zero DipFav to sway them, but got exactly what I wanted
    Cities: settled 2 more for 8 total, stopped expanding to chop military
    Districts: done/placed; GovPl-1/x, HS-1/0, Campus-2/1, Harbor-3/2, CommH-1/1, Theater-0/2, IZ-0/1, Encamp-1/0

    Science: mostly upper to Cartography
    Culture & Policies: balanced to Mercenaries & Civil Service (for alliances)
    Governors: 89-Magnus (Black Marketeer due to lack of iron), 91-Pingala (now +sc/cul)
    Great People: tried to get a great general, but last Ancient era one was bought when I was at 59 points, so now waiting for the next one; I still have zero great people

    Military: 3 Galleys; 7 Samurai, 1 Bat Ram, 1 Spearman, 1 Archer, others at 0 cost
    Note: Samurai are +5 for Military Advisors, +4 for Oligarchy, +5 against Australian units from Military Alliance with Poland; +5 near coast for Divine Wind; oh, my!
    Diplomacy: T100 Allies – Poland, France, Canada, Macedonia; Friendly – China; T100 started war with Australia (convinced all others that had met Australia to pay me +18g/t total to join in); late to start warring ☹
    Trading: anytime a Civ got to 40 iron/horses, traded for the 2 extras, which meant Poland and sometimes Canada for Iron, France for Horses; ended up not building horse units, so really waste of gold there, especially after I finally got a horse pasture; +183g/t from deals (lux & dip fav)
    City States: added Suz Kumasi (3 now)
    Religion: N/A
    Wonders: None
    Era Score: already 71/80 for next Golden Age
