Proposal: East India Company National Wonder is renamed to Chartered Company
Amendment: changed the name from "National Trade Center" to "Chartered Company"

Rationale: East India is too specific, while the game has a plethora of different Civilizations and cultures. A more generic name fits better and is better for the game, in my humble opinion.

East India Company is not actually very specific. Basically all western nations had an East India Company.

All EICs were Chartered Companies, which means they were granted legal trade monopolies with X foreign nation. A Chartered Company would capture examples of such entities that were the same thing, but not named "East India Company", like the "Hudson's Bay Company"

East India Company always bugs me that unlocks in Medieval Era while historically was founded in 1600.
It would make more sense historically-wise to rename it Casa da India (f: 1500) or even Casa da Guiné (f: 1443) which was the first ever of its kind.

Trade guilds with charter rights to monopolistic trade with certain ports date further back than that. One example would be the Company of Merchant Adventurers (pretty good band name...)

The oldest of such guilds I am aware of is the 500 Lords of Ayyavolu, who had monopolistic trade rights with present-day Indonesia and Malaysia, under the protection of the Chola.

I know very well, but it still refers to a specific geographic location on Earth (which is not necessarily bad, just a fact :D )

The main reason for this proposal wasn't even the possibly negative connotation of the company (which by itself could be enough justification), but the fact that they were (the British and the Dutch, at least) borderline completely independent from their respective governments, which is a bit weird for one of the best and most important National Wonder of the game, from a "theming-aspect".

But I do see your point, I'm not necessarily in favor for a change here (I can do it myself for my own usage), just thought might as well stir up the calm water a little bit, regarding the naming conventions.

If we want to be generic and ageographic then "Chartered Company" is a better choice than "National Trade Center" imho.

Yeah we could use fewer national wonders starting with the word "national".

I can sponsor this and related civilopedia change.

I'm surprised this one is controversial (and even losing at the moment).
Of all the names, East India Company is the weirdest.
What does this mean if I'm the Indonesians? What if I'm playing Pangaea or some other map where there are no Indies?

What do you do when you want to build the Eiffle Tower but your not playing France, or worse....there is no france in the game?

Yeah but this is a National Wonder and not a World Wonder.

east india company has no civ franchise pedigree; not counting the mobile/console spinoffs, it appears for the first time in civ 5 (unlike oxford and manhattan). Also, there's an "India" in the game, and building an "East India Company" has nothing to do with in-game India. I'm pretty tolerant of euro-centrism, but this one is too far. voted yes.

Yeah but this is a National Wonder and not a World Wonder./
And why is that such a magical statement that makes it ok for WW to have specific known names and history but NWs can't?

The simple truth is, its all arbitrary preference.

It makes less sense for everyone to have an Oxford University. :P

I wasn't declaring it was a magical statement of truth, it IS all a matter of taste.
