You can trade luxuries, strategics, tribute CS, win luxury quests, build markets, connect cities.

Players with resources I named can do all of this too and have even more gold. Most of your Gold still comes from tiles in the early game.

provided you use the gold mostly for upgrades of your large army.

Well that's what I think isn't fun, when the game forces you to constantly spending all your early game gold on unit upgrades. There should be a balance between investments/purchases and upgrades.
