As we all know, currently in the game there is no advantage to a mixed affinity strategy. With 2 levels on your secondary affinity, you get all the hybrid UU and any point more than that will just delay your win condition.
Considering the three affinity victories, it makes sense. For you to have the strongest units and to be capable of doing so many extreme things (like conquering the mother Earth or merging everyone minds with a planet) you NEED to be fanatical and radical about your ideologies. However, an open-minded approach really have no reward? The proposition i'll make here is to give a chance for the non-fanatic sponsors.
PS: I registered this account just so I can discuss with you guys those ideas, as I'm interested on making a mod about it.
Power to the Fanatics, Versatility to the Open-Minded
The very first thing I though when thinking about mixed affinities was to give it a boost on weaker units. As someone with mixed affinities can't reach stronger UU, it would make sense to have benefits on weaker units because of the synergy of different ideas. But after pondering a lot about it, I decided that the best course of action was to actually limit the versatility of pure affinities, while keeping their power. That said, a great way of boosting weaker units of mixed affinities is to give they early upgrades.
Upgrades on Unique Units
Every Unique Unit have an affinity point total requirement for an upgrade. For example, the level 4 UU (like the Battlesuit) can be upgraded to True Battlesuit on 12 purity, or Prime Battlesuit on 10 purity + 2 supremacy. The idea is to tweak that for giving a better reward for a mixed approach, reducing the total required by 2 while increasing the secondary requirement.
For example, True Battlesuit would require 12 purity, but Prime Battlesuit would require 6 purity and 4 supremacy, for a total of just 10. This is a compensation to the fact that, for getting that, he don't even have a level 7 UU, and can't even dream of stronger UU.
Upgrades on Basic Units
Now, this is a challenge. If one is to follow the idea of reducing the versatility of a pure affinity, and increasing mixed's one, one would have to actually limit upgrades for pure affinities. This, however, have balancing issues for nerfing affinities too much. The solution I found is to give each affinity a basic unit focus, where only players with points on it can unlock the final tier of said basic unit.
As an example, lets suppose the focused basic unit of Harmony is the infantry. With every other tier unchanged, the last soldier tier would be:
Marauder: 11 harmony
Centurion: 6 purity, 4 harmony
Apostle: 6 supremacy, 4 harmony
I'm thinking about tuning those numbers to optimize the "one upgrade per affinity level" rule. Or maybe chance other units unstead.
Infantry would be the basic unit focus of Harmony (11h or 6x 4h)
Cavalry would be the basic unit focus of Purity (9p or 5x 3p)
I am undecided about Supremacy.
Naturally, other basic units would remain unchanged.
Victory Conditions
I didn't think of any special victory conditions for mixed affinity, so basically you have to go either domination or contact.
Other Buffs
I'm currently afraid of thinking about extra bonuses for mixed affinities, but things I would do (and while I'm at it, fix other balance issues) is things like tweaking the affinity XP spread on the tech web and nerfing level 4 UU (so the guy going mixed don't need to rush level 4 affinity anyway).
