    Global News Report

IS THE WORLD POLARIZING? With the reaffirmation of the Entente between the Russian Empire, France, and New England, there stand to be several powers which look to defend themselves against this potential triumvate. The Berlin Alliance has been established to counteract the growing power of those three powers. The nations of Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Italy, England, and Greece have all agreed to form their own bloc in response to the Entente and to protect their own interests. Many fear that this reorganization of power could lead to a similar experience that took place in the early nineteenth century with the Venetian Pact. To these people, it seems that a major war is on the horizon.

    North American News Report

TEXAN-LOUISIANAN WAR. New Orleans, Dominion of Louisiana. In a move shocking and surprising most of North America, the French protectorate of Louisiana launched a sneak attack against Texas. Initial cavalry raids were bloodily repulsed by Texan forces in the north, and attempts to move into the Oklahoma province were blocked by the Texan army. Though the Louisianan fleet shattered the Texan navy in a single cannon volley, amphibious landings by a small army in southern Texas along the Rio Grande were forced back into the sea by local army. The main blow of the Louisianan military came at Houston, where the largest army landed to attack the Texan capital. After a several month long siege, the city fell, though the defending army managed to escape. Following battles north of the city resulted in a Texan defeat and a disorganized rout of the army to the north.
    Casualty List
Texas: 13 Infantry Brigades, 2 Cavalry Brigades, 7 Artillery Brigades, 6 Monitors
Louisiana: 11 Infantry Brigades, 6 Cavalry Brigades, 4 Artillery Brigades

CHICAGO ELECTIONS. Chicago, Free City of Chicago. Chicagoan elections this year saw the victory of Chicago’s Moderate Party, promising to unite both conservatives and liberals together under a united nationalist stance. They have pledged to protect the city against possible Virginian domination. (+1 Stability for Chicago)

GEORGIA ELECTIONS. Savannah, Georgia. After two years of war surrounding the North American nation of Georgia, the Conservatives have played off the fear to gain election. They have promised a stronger military defense for Georgia. This has met significant opposition and anger from the left, which has hoped for peaceful disarmament. (-1 Stability for Georgia)

NEW ENGLAND ELECTIONS. Boston, Republic of New England. Elections in New England this year were brutally fought, but after the accidental death of the Liberal Party candidate, the Moderate Party managed to win a victory. The Moderates have promised to keep New England strong abroad as well as maintaining improved working conditions for the lower classes.

ALASKA ANNEXED. Juno, Russian Empire. After several years of economic turmoil and decline, Alaska has accepted annexation by the Russian Empire. They have become a semi-autonomous region within Russia and given the same rights of citizenship. Some nations in North America have expressed displeasure at the arrival of yet another European imperial power on their continent.

SLAVE REFORM IN VIRGINIA. Richmond, Virginian Empire. In the Virginian state of Delaware, the government has declared slavery illegal and has promised compensation to the local slave owners for their lost slaves. The Virginian government has also allowed for freedmen to own their own property and homes, bringing rights to a new scale. Surrounding papers in Georgia and Pennsylvania have applauded this move by the Virginian government, and “they hope that Virginia will soon enter among the civilized nations of North America.”

ISANTI REVOLT IN SAUK. Sauk, Sauk. The Isanti tribe, long oppressed by the Sauk, have risen in the western part of the nation, only to be brutally suppressed by government forces. Heavy fighting took place throughout the countryside, leaving several villages burning and devastated. The Sauk government has declared martial law throughout Isanti territory and has begun retribution programs in response to the rebellion. The Lakota Sioux and Fox have protested against these actions, promising responses should the attacks on the Isanti continue.

    Central/South American News Report

PERU-BOLIVIAN WAR. Sucre, Bolivia. Despite German and New Englander attempts to secure peace in central South America, heavy fighting continued this year between Bolivian and Peruvian military forces. Bolivian attempts to outflank the Peruvian army met with failure thanks to a strong defensive position and the arrival of New Englander reinforcements. Peruvian advances later in the year nearly led to the capture of Sucre, pushing even into the outskirts. Late Bolivian counter-attacks led to the driving back of the Peruvian army to nearly the starting lines of the year’s fighting. On the home front in Bolivia, riots have occurred against the war and against the nation’s recent entry into the German Imperial Protectorate, Sucre and the other major cities of Bolivia have had martial law declared to prevent further unrest. In Peru similar protests were held against New England, though the government managed to prevent any significant violence from taking place
    Casualty List
Peru: 24 Infantry Brigades, 5 Artillery Brigades
    New England: 1 Artillery Brigade
Bolivia: 16 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades, 6 Cavalry Brigades

INSTABILITY IN COLOMBIA. Bogotá, Colombia. Riots and socialist protests led to increasing violence in the South American nation of Colombia. Martial law has been declared and thousands of civilian casualties have been reported. Some cities have thrown up barricades and threatens to open rebellion (-3 Stability for Colombia)

REFORMATION IN BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The emperor has returned to Brazil, given the position of a figurehead ruler over a republican style government. Despite this and the arrival of nearly four divisions of German soldiers, the Brazilian nation is no more stable. Socialist riots and near mutinies among the military have taken place, restored to order by only the barest of chance. Many fear that the government of Brazil is teetering, just getting ready to collapse.

    European News Report

FRENCH CONSUL ASSASSINATED. Paris, French Empire. The French imperial world was rocked this year when the Consul was assassinated by an anarchist bomber. In the resulting confusion, a compromise candidate was brought to the position from the Moderate Party. Though considered to be inexperienced, he has relatively few political enemies and is widely believed to be the only man for the job at the moment. None the less, the stability effects have been felt through the entire empire, protectorates and the main nation. No one is really sure if the new Consul will be able to restore complete order. (-1 Stability for French Empire and its Protectorates)

CELTIC UNION ELECTIONS. Dublin, Celtic Union. The Conservative Party of the Celtic Union was overturned this year, as the Liberal Party won an overwhelming victory in these elections. There has been some considerable dispute over these tightly fought elections, and accusations of corruption and bribery have been made. Riots broke out in Dublin and Glasgow, starting fires and nearly burning down both cities despite the valiant efforts of the local fire fighting organizations. The new Liberal Party has promised to strive for peace and possible disarmament in the hopes of forestalling a future war in the British Islands. (-1 Stability for Celtic Union)

DANISH EMPIRE ELECTIONS. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. Dansk Venstre Parti won this year’s elections for Prime Minister, throwing out the former representatives of the Dansk Konservative Parti. This Moderate force has promised to unite both left and right, in the hopes of establishing a stronger Danish nation-state. (+1 Stability for the Danish Empire)

PORTUGAL ELECTIONS. Lisbon, Portugal. The Liberals of the Portuguese government have been turned out of office this year, as the monarchist Conservatives regain power based on a Catholic faith platform. There has been some argument over this, but most have felt it was a fairly fought electoral campaign for both sides.

    African/Middle Eastern News Report

LIBERIA ELECTIONS. Forsythville, Liberia. The Liberal Party of Liberia won reelection this year, pledging to keep stability in the nation and to build up conditions for the working man of Liberia. They have also announced plans to build greater ties with other African nations like Morocco and the Zulu Empire. (+1 Stability for Liberia)

    Asian/Pacific News Report

WAR OF THE WARLORDS. Peking, Chinese Empire. In a massive gamble to restore order to the Chinese Empire, the emperor ordered a massive assault against all the reigning warlords of western and southern China. These attacks met with varying levels of success and failure. To the far west, Sinkiang has nearly collapsed under the pressure of the massive Imperial assault. In the closer west, Yunnan not only has defeated the Imperial army in the field, they have managed to seize some land from the emperor’s government. Guangxi has managed to hold the Imperial armies at a stalemate, using relatively equal forces and artillery superiority to hold their ground.
    Casualty List
Guangxi: 9 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades
Yunnan: 10 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades
Sinkiang: 16 Infantry Brigades, 1 Artillery Brigade
Chinese Empire: 54 Infantry Brigades, 4 Artillery Brigades

OOC: Great update :). Just a thought with stability I think it would be more realistic if costs of stability were reversed. So that if your stability level was 1 you have to pay 12 Economic Power and if your stability level was 12 you have to pay 1 Economic Power to maintain your current level. The costs to upgrade to the next level are still the same so to go from 10 to 11 it would cost 11 and so on. This way I think is more realistic since if you've got a stability level of 3 you will have to pay a lot more to remain in power with rebellions likely occurring all over the nation but if your at level 12 and everyones happy then they don't require much to stay that way. It will also encourage people to invest in stability since with the way it is now I would personally prefer to lower stability a little bit to free up some Economic Power.

Your violent attack against the Republic of Texas is a great concern to the Mexican Empire. After your recent concerns about Virginian aggression we would have expected Louisiana to not mimic the actions of her neighbor.

The Mexican Empire demands that Louisiana immediatly call for a cease fire with the Republic of Texas and look to resolve any dispute that you may have diplomatically.

    To: The Republic of Texas
    From: Mexico

Your struggle against Louisiana must succeed. The Mexican Empire is willing to send economic aid to the Republic of Texas to ensure that our neighbor to the East is stable and secure. While in the past our two nations may have had our differences after 60 years of peace and prosperity we feel that we have overcome these differences.

The Kaiser would like to express his condolences for the death of your Consul and we hope that the those responsible, if it is indeed a group of persons, are brought to swift justice. We hope that stability will return to your nation quickly.

    To New England and Peru

Germany was under the impression that both your nations wanted peace? We have even withdrawn our armies from the conflict entirely yet New England persists? What do your nations propose, for this conflict cannot go on. To much has been lost already. Germany again calls for an immediate cease fire and a return to pre-war borders. Further more we ask again that New England withdraw her troops from Peru immediately.

    To Bolivia

The Kaiser is most displeased with your illegal use of our land to maneuver troops.

    To Louisiana

Germany to is concerned of this violence. We back Mexico in their call for a cease fire and demand an explanation for your actions. What wrong has the Republic of Texas committed against you?

Edit:- Stability would cost less to keep people unhappy because obviously you are doing less and don't give a crap about them. You aren't using propaganda to sway the sheep, you aren't bribing people, you aren't doing a lot of things you should to keep them happy. If you aren't doing those things, and they hate you, you aren't spending a lot of money, hence less money=less stability.

Know that your unwarranted invasion of the Republic of Texas is not looked upon kindly here in Virginia. Texas has long been a friend and a one-time ally, and we will not see her threatened by an upstart state as yourself. Withdraw from Texas now.

    To Texas
    From Virginia

Your defense is of paramount concern to Virginia. As friends of King Robert I, Texas has reserved for itself a place on the short list that is a true Virginian friend. If peace is not signed soon, you can expect a harsher, more tangible Virginian response to this invasion.

    To New England
    From Virginia

I hope that you will express the same concerns as I over the situation in Texas. Perhaps we could work together to find common ground on this issue and so amplify our voice in the calling for a swift Louisianian withdrawal.

    To France
    From Virginia

Our condolences for the death of your consul. On another note, we ask that you have a chat with your governor in Louisiana. Their unwarranted attack against a friend of the Kingdom's, and indeed an ally of New England's, is quite disturbing.

    To Sweden
    From King Robert II

Thank you for your congratulations. With the dawn of the new century, so too has Virginia entered a new age of enlightenment.

    To Georgia
    From Virginia

I reiterate that Georgia has nothing to fear from Virginia. Our long road towards reconciliation, though, could be lengthened if Georgia finds it in herself to align militarily with that of New England.

    To Chicago
    From King Robert II

First I'd like to express my congratulations for the victories of the moderate party and the election of the prime minister. Second, I would like to express Virginia's quest for reconciliation with the city-state of Chicago from past grievances. And third, I would be honored to sign a peace treaty and a non-aggression pact with Chicago, that would last for a decade.

    To Canada
    From King Robert II

Canada, like Georgia and Pennsylvania, has nothing to fear from Virginia. On another note, I am currently aware of Canada's predicament concerning her very reliant relationship with New England. While it is of no concern to me whether Canada cares for her market destination or not, but I do come with a further proposition. Should Canada be willing, Virginia proposes a lengthy rail network, headquartered in Detroit, that would open up Virginia's northern provinces to Canadian goods while also transporting Canadian goods as far south as the Mississippi, and as far east as the Atlantic coast. This could broaden Canada's market, while lessoning her relial on channels through New England.

OOC: Well, in the discussion regarding stability, I think that a small bonus should be given for keeping stability high. For example, every point you keep your nation over 6-8 stability, you get half a growth point to represent the fact that a stable country is one that works harder and has a better proficiency in the industries and such, because stability means that strikes are less likely. EQ, please, keep in mind that having to pay for stability to stay in 10, 11 or 12 is quite hard, especially if you don't get any kind of economic bonus.

    To: Swedish Empire
    From: Danish Empire

Despite the change of government from the Konservative Parti to the Venstre Parti, there won't be any change in foreign relationships. In fact, we hope that, considering our slightly more liberal policies, the relationship between the two of us only betters with time, up to the point where there is enough trust among us to create the hoped Kalmar Alliance, and further.
