A Brave New World Part 2

Central/South American News Report

EL SALVADOR ELECTIONS. San Salvador, El Salvador. The recent growth and military purchases of Guatemala and Honduras have begun to greatly worry populace and politicians alike in the nation of El Salvador. In recent years both nations have made military purchases from the Republic of Italy, while the latter has also made a purchase or two from the Virginian Empire. The renewal of war in the region has begun to dawn as a imminent possibility, as the nations who could intervene become increasingly embroiled in a larger conflict to the north. This has sparked a revival of the El Salvadorian Conservative Party, which has promised to evolve the nation’s national security, bringing in modern weapons and equipment with which to arm the military. They have also promised a new plan to provide traditional Catholic education to the masses, hoping to improve the nation’s literacy rate dramatically. (+1 Stability)

REVOLT GROWS IN BUENOS AIRES. Buenos Aires, Argentine Collectives Federation. Anti-socialist agitators were unappeased by recent reforms by the Argentine Communist Party, as riots and revolts continue to rise throughout the eastern coast of the nation. These people have declared that they are not represented by the interests of any element of the Communist Party, and have renounced any control they might have. Fighting has grown brutal in the more urban regions as the military moves in to restore control. Although the Argentine military has declared victory in the conflict, there are some regions of several cities which remain no-go areas for the army and its supporters. Rumors of revolt continues to grow while the military struggles to maintain order. (-7 Manpower, -10 Infantry Brigades, -1 Stability)

ARGENTINE PARTY REFORM. Urquizaville, Argentine Collectives Federation. The Argentine Collectives Federation has taken a conservative step towards free political action by creating the new primary system for the Communist Party. Localized elections can now be held among various members of the communist organization for the various collectives of the country. This move mimics the constitutions of the Socialist Union of South America and the United Collectives of North America which both allow for similar localized democracy. However, the hope that it would resolve issues throughout the former Buenos Aires Protectorate has disintegrated in front of the eyes of those in charge of the nation. The riots and unrest mentioned above clearly demonstrate that the eastern Argentines call for a government which is not a communist one. (-1 Stability)

DEUXI ASSASSINATED. Mexico City, United Collectives of North America. The government of the United Collectives reported the death of Chinese revolutionary Chen Deuxi in Mexico City this year. This leader of the Union of Chinese Collectives took refuge within the nation following the collapse of his nation during the twilight of the Chinese Civil War. While claims have been made of the Republic of China’s involvement in the operation, no has decisively proven that it was anything more than a mere robbery gone bad. Police reports state that the murder took place in Deuxi’s house at night while asleep in bed. Independent sources have confirmed that he was killed by what some believe to have been an ice pick to the back of the head while sleeping.

REVOLT IN NICARAGUA. Leeville, Virginian Empire. A massive uprising has been launched by the Spanish majority population in Nicaragua against Virginian colonial rule. The Royal Colonial Army has just barely managed to retain control over the white city of Leeville in the southern part of the country, but have been forced out of the countryside by vicious guerilla forces. Shipping through the Nicaragua Canal has become dangerous as Nicaraguan forces occupy both sides of Lake Managua, shelling any ships which pass through to the canal ends on the west and east sides of the lake. This virtually has shut down shipping as the region becomes a war zone. The rebels have captured most of the city of Managua, though the colonial forces have retained their positions on the eastern side of the city. White settlers have been driven out in fear as the Hispanic members of the region proclaim the Union of Nicaragua under a socialist emergency leadership council. They have called upon the workers of Central America for a revolution, bringing about social justice against the Virginian imperialists. (-5 Infantry Brigades, -4 Stability in Nicaragua)

HAITI IN CHAOS. Port-au-Prince, Empire of Haiti. After years of struggling, the nation of Haiti has collapsed into full civil war. Divisions have established themselves into battle lines as the government loses its grip on most of the island of Hispaniola. The imperial government has managed to retain its support from the navy as well as holding together the colonies and various garrisons within. The main island of the empire, however, has fallen apart as a number of factions emerge against the leadership. Though the emperor retains control of most of Port-au-Prince and some of the surrounding region, he has lost overall control of the island. A communist insurgency has erupted in the northwestern part of the island and also claims the northern quarter of Port-au-Prince. In the center of the island, the long oppressed native Taino population has risen up and reestablished the Taino Republic, declaring independence from the faltering empire. Lastly, on the eastern half of the island, a conservative general has seized control of several socialist air bases which had been used against Puerto Rico. He has used this power and his own forces to carve out a swathe of land of his own. This territory has been proclaimed the new Grand Kingdom of Hispaniola. Fighting has already been brutal and the nation has crossed the brink of anarchy.

COLOMBIA ANNOUNCES NEW STYLE OF GOVERNMENT. Bogota, Colombia. The Colombian government has announced to the people that they will no longer allow runaway communist influence within their nation, as socialism is incompatible with a true Christian state. The military government has pledged that they will work closely with the Colombian Catholic Church to make sure that the nation is run by traditional Catholic virtues. A number of prominent socialists and communists have been arrested and imprisoned by the government, while many more have simply disappeared. The government has stated that they will do what they can to keep the nation safe against all aggression by the evil communist scourge. To this end, a large amount of arms has been purchased from the French government, including some of the massive zeppelin dreadnoughts which gained notoriety during the various Mississippi River Crises between Louisiana and Georgia. The new weapons are said to be the nation’s bulwark against socialist expansionism.

European News Report

ENGLAND ELECTIONS. London, England. The government of England went through its latest series of elections this year, which have been dominated by fears of external insecurity and invasion. The rising belief that a war with France may be on the horizon have led to many to look for comfort within the bosom of the reigning Conservative Party. The Conservatives have promised to maintain England’s military and international affairs at the current levels, vowing that the nation would not be caught unawares by the eruption of a major war in Europe. They have also spoke on the raging war against the United Collectives of North America, and while they have argued against “naked communist aggression” in the region, they have not committed to involvement in the region. (+1 Stability)

RUSSIAN ELECTIONS. St. Petersburg, Russian Federation. The Russian people have grown increasingly concerned by the intensifying tensions across the world, both in Europe and in North America. The brutality of the conflict in North America has reach cinemas in Russia, as the fighting continues to swell between armies numbering in the millions. This has led to the revival of the political career of Josef Jugashvili who has united a number of conservative and liberal politicians into his own faction. He has railed against the standing party for allowing the “technological stagnation” of the nation’s navy and army. He has vowed to help modernize the “long distance capacity” of the country’s military, providing more jobs for the armed forces and national weapons industry. He’s promised to scale back government spending on superfluous domestic programs and “corporate bribery,” helping to create ever greater power for the Russian government. (-1 Stability)

UNREST IN BULGARIA. Sofia, Bulgaria. Fighting broke out in the Bulgarian capitol of Sofia this year as elements of the military attempted to rise in rebellion against the standing government. In the chaos the Liberal Party prime minister has resigned and vanished from public life. Martial law has been declared throughout the nation and the army has been deployed through strategic points across the country. The emergency government has granted the monarch of Bulgaria, Tsar Ferdinand III, absolute executive authority over the nation. He has pledged to use his backing with the military to investigate the causes of the disorder and to properly achieve full control over the country. Some dissident elements of the country have protested against this move, and riots have been broken out, but the government has assured the Russian Imperial Protectorate that the unrest is being quelled “with all due diligence and force.” (-9 Infantry Brigades)

RESISTANCE IN PORTUGAL. Lisbon, Portugal. Last year’s takeover by King Miguel III and his backers has proven to be not an unanimously popular move among the people of Portugal. Opposition papers have risen in revolt against the newly reorganized regime, but have found themselves quickly closed down by loyalists to the monarchy. Riots have broken out over the closing of one of the largest papers in Lisbon, which had recently published an article criticizing the king for not following the ways of his great-grandfather who had liberalized the nation and ensured Portuguese freedom from both the French and Spanish monarchies. The violence has been extreme and the government has responded in force and martial law has been declared along with a curfew within Lisbon and Oporto, the main centers of unrest and “illegal activity.” (-1 Stability, -1 Manpower)

DANES FOLLOW SWEDISH DECLARATION. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. The Danish imperial government has declared a similar claim as to the Swedish 1935 declaration of neutrality in North America. All Danish sea lanes have been closed to the military shipping of belligerent nations to be enforced by the power of Denmark’s navy. The prohibition is limited to ships carrying arms for belligerent nations in conflict as well as to warships of any nation. The zones include off the coastline of Danish colonies in both Africa and the Caribbean Sea.

African/Middle Eastern News Report

PALESTINE ELECTIONS. Al Quds, Palestine. Palestinian elections were hotly disputed this year as various regional parties emerged to throw the Conservative leaders of the nation into turmoil. The recent reforms of Rashid Arabia have sparked a backlash at the perceived Islamist supporters of the Conservative Party, and the liberals have capitalized upon this. Rallying support from local Jews and Christians in bulk, the Liberal Party has managed to break the hold of the Conservatives over much of the nation. They have vowed to keep the nation safe from Islamic oppression as well as to maintain the sovereignty of the mostly Arab republic from any ambitions the regime in Rashid Arabia may harbor. The Conservatives have naturally protested against the approach of the Liberals, decrying perceived fear tactics, and denying any involvement with the Rashids. Hearings and investigations have taken place, greatly undermining any hope of cooperation within the nation’s Congress. (-2 Stability)

WAR ERUPTS IN MIDDLE EAST. Mosul, Kurdistan. Due to recent failure to turn over Kurdish regions to the new government of Kurdistan, a war has been launched between the new nation and Persia. The Kurd government has launched a full invasion of Persia, hoping to obtain what they believe is rightfully theirs from the Persian government. The invasion has proven to be mostly successful, as the Persian military was distracted by planning for a possible Virginian or Russian attack. The Kurds have taken much of the territory they demanded after harsh fighting for the major towns and villages of the region. The Kurds have offered a peace for the hotly disputed area, which has in the past thirty years fallen under the control of six different nations for various amounts of time. Persian nationalists have called for some effort to be made against the upstart Kurds and to preserve Persia’ territorial sovereignty.

RASHIDS LAUNCH UNITY PROGRAM. Riyadh, Rashid Arabia. Hoping to bring centralization and unity to the Arabian nation, following previous years’ military reform, Rashid Arabia has launched the new “Unity through Faith” program. This program has led to the arrest of noted religious leaders outside of the Sunni Islam faith, primarily members of the Wahabi movement as well as the exile of the nation’s minor Christian population. Sunni Islam has been announced to be the official state religion and others have been barred from practice throughout the country. The king has vowed to lead the nation by the laws of the Quran in the hopes of establishing a pure state of Islam once again. This move has raised ire in the nation’s neighbors, which have begun to mobilize their militaries in the case of Rashid aggression.

TUNISIA BEGINS ELECTRIFICATION. Tunis, Tunisia. The Tunisian government has launched a popular new program for the people of the less developed regions of the nation. In order to encourage construction in regions outside of Tunis proper, the government has paid for the construction and fuel for large power stations to bring electrification to the undeveloped villages along the Algerian and Libyan borders. The people of the country, though somewhat concerned of the cost, have viewed this as a popular and progressive step forward for the nation as a whole. (+1 Stability)

ABYSSINIA RIOTS. Addis Ababa, Republic of New England. As the war in North America begins to summon resources from all parts of the New Englander empire, the people of Abyssinia have risen in protest against foreign rule. This region, which remained independent until the end of the Great War, has once more reestablished its cultural identity. They have rallied in crowds against New England’s colonial government, calling for a new order. Infantry forces stationed in the city soon fired upon the crowds, leading to a bloody slaughter in the center of Abyssinia’s former capitol. The city’s university has been shut down as New Englander forces restore order to the colony. (-1 Stability in Abyssinia)

PERSIA SIGNS ECONOMIC AGREEMENT. Tehran, Persia. The Persian government, hoping to resolve the crisis which erupted following nationalization of the nation’s oil last year, has signed an agreement with both the Virginian Empire and the Russian Federation. They have agreed to return control of the various oil fields and rigs to the Virginians and Russians who previously possessed them but at a cost. The Persians have been promised to receive 35% of all profits made from the oil production of all companies which have possessions upon their soil. The people have also been pleased by an agreement which will make sure that Persian authorities monitor labor in the various companies for abuses of the people and workers who worked for the foreign corporations.

IMMIGRATION SWELLS IN NEW HOLLAND. Sydney, Republic of the Netherlands. The rise of the war in North America has begun to dramatically enlarge the standing population of the Dutch colony of New Holland. Refugees or people simply looking for a better life have been leaving from nations like the Virginian Empire and Republic of New England for the open and free lands of Dutch New Holland. Though some requirements have the mostly English speaking people needing to learn Dutch, this problem has been solved by the immigrants as they simply move into the countryside, evading any feeble attempts to centralize authority by colonial leadership. The Boers have been outraged by this turn of events as more and more immigrants continue to arrive on New Holland’s shores, sparking the largest immigration trend globally since the late nineteenth century. CHINESE ELECTIONS CHANGED. Lanzhou, Republic of China. The emergency elections which had been held two years ago following the death of Dong Feng Rong have had a lasting effect upon the Republic of China. The 1934 elections have caused the change of the original six year schedules, with the new elections not being held this year, but rather in 1940. Further elections will be held every six years following, from 1946 and onward. The change from the originally scheduled elections has angered some, who had hoped for elections this year to remove the believed to be ultra-conservative president currently running the nation.

URBAN REVOLT. Changsha, Republic of China. The land reform and ever changing lifestyle of the average Chinese has led to dramatic disappointment and unrest in central China. The promise of change and a new order in China have led many to believe that these will come instantly and have moved to the growing cities of the nation in the hopes of receiving the help they believe will arrive. The promises of the radio and government proved hollow and relentless poverty still remains in the slums of the larger cities of inner China. The republican government has done what they can, but much still remains in ruins from the war. The poor people brought into the cities either find bare bones work or no work at all, living in incredibly harsh conditions. Several revolts against organized authority broke out from these slums, as the great cities of central China rose in outrage. Over a hundred cities, towns, and villages fell to the rebellion, and martial law was quickly declared. Faced by deserting troops and furious citizenry, the military fought a minor war throughout the year to restore order. Heavy casualties were suffered in the retaking of cities and damages were harsh for the average Chinese. The government has expressed concern for the people of China, particularly in the wake of this recent unrest, but has assured the nation and the world that order has been restored. CHINA EXPANDS RADIO CENTERS. Peking, Republic of China. The Chinese government, despite the rising revolt in the hinterlands, has continued to extend its influence across the nation. A large number of former radio receiving centers have been expanded into larger community centers to act as an improved gathering place for the people of Chinese towns and villages. Several of these have been added to populous urban regions as well now, including both Peking and Lanzhou. The new centers include space to play for children as well as various other facilities and even electricity for much deprived Chinese farmers and peasants.

UNREST RISING IN BURMA. Rangoon, Republic of New England. Concern has been raised in various colonial halls throughout Southeast Asia as reports of civil disorder continue to grow in New Englander Burma. Anti-New Englander posters and propaganda have been finding their way into increased production as the nation seems to begin to awaken against the colonial government. Though no violent action has taken place, authorities in the region have plead for action from the government back in Boston. (-1 Stability in Burma)

KYUSHU IN REBELLION. Fukuoka, Portugal. Portuguese authorities have struggled to maintain control over the Japanese island of Kyushu which has begun rising in revolt against the colonial authority. Warriors from the hills and cities have begun fighting Portuguese colonial garrisons, winning several minor battles against the European power. The Japanese of the island have terrified the white merchants and populace who have fled for safer ports, though trade continues uninterrupted. The Portuguese government has deployed a large army to the island to maintain imperial control. King Miguel III vowed that under no circumstances will “squinty eyed apes be allowed a true state” in Japan. (-2 Stability on Kyushu, -1 Infantry Brigade)

The Six Admirals
Type: Moving Picture
Genre: Historical Drama
Producer: Beria Productions
Running Time: 101 minutes
Summary: This is a film about the six great admirals who served with various nations during the War of the Second Union, coming from Russia, New England, France, England, Denmark, and the abortive United States of America. The admirals knew each other personally from education and experiences before the war and soon found themselves fighting each other in a brutal, globe-spanning conflict. The film documents the first ever filmed naval battle, using state of the art sets and background artistry. Most important were the great battles at the mouth of the Thames as the French held their ground against the fleets of the world. The movie has been met with much success globally and despite its Russian origins, has been uniquely honored as a source of national pride for a variety of European and North American nations.

Travelling in History

Genre: Historical Fiction
Producer: Dansk Film Productions
Running Time: 109 minutes
Summary: A historian called Harold Rasmussen is walking around Skt. Bendts Church in the town of Ringsted when he stops in front of Valdemar I of Denmark's tomb. Suddenly, something hits him on his head, and when he wakes up, he finds himself in the year 1152, the year when Valdemar I ascended to the Danish throne. As he slowly gets used to the fact that he has somehow travelled back in time, he realises that he has the chance to make Christian Denmark a world superpower thanks to his knowledge of the future, but soon becomes distraught between his own national pride and his wish to conserve history as it is while rebellious nobles start a struggle with King Valdemar I for power, with Harold at the center of this conflict.

NEW FILM FESTIVAL TO BE OPENED. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. Copenhagen, center of human cultural developments such as the Mulling-Hansen Prizes and the International Olympics Committee, has launched an ambitious new awards program. A government sponsored film festival was opened this year, inviting motion picture makers from across the world to attend. Though not as prestigious for recognition as the Odessa Film Club Awards in the Russian Federation, the festival has collected cinema reels from across Europe. Attendance was rather low, however, and the quality of shipped film has further shown that sometimes film reels do not travel well.

SERIAL BROADCASTS GAIN EUROPEAN POPULARITY. Munich, German Republic. Futurists and creative thinkers have developed a new series of popular pre-film programs for cinemas. The new “serial broadcast” means several fifteen minute episodes of a continuing plot, usually updated monthly. With the first inspired by the vigilante Hooded Justice and several others, the broadcasts have proven wildly successful. The success of the Danish film, Traveling in History has led to a number of scientific fiction broadcasts, called “The World of Tomorrow.” These short films detail aspects of human life which will emerge by the dawn of the twenty-first centry.

1936 OLYMPICS. Providence, Republic of New England. The 1936 Olympics have proven to be the least attended and least successful events in the history of the competition since the first games in 1912. The ongoing war between the former United Nation States of America and the International Socialist Cooperative Group have sparked a dramatic change. The members of the ISCG were barred from participation in the events, being prohibited from arriving in Providence due to matters of New Englander state security. The Co-Axial Pact protested these actions and the actions of the “warmongering UNSA” as just cause for a boycott. Only limited amounts of athletes broke the rules of the boycott, arriving from Tennessee and the Republic of Italy. Due to the absence of much competition from around the globe, the Russian Federation dominated most events, winning the largest amount of gold medals that any nation has won in a single year’s events. Various other athletes who have been kept at the sidelines from the success of Co-Axial and ISCG nations have also risen to the top, bringing honor and glory to their respective nations.

THE AXIS GAMES. Paris, France. Instead of participating in the International Olympic Games, the Co-Axial Pact held the Free People’s Sporting games as an alternative for their athletes. As part of the boycott process of the Olympics, the various nations have determined to still give their athletes something to do. Realistically, though it is said to be a competitor to the larger events program of the Olympics, most athletes consider the awards given to be inferior to the International games, and some athletes from the larger nations of the Co-Axial Pact are believed to have competed under the banners of smaller countries in order to achieve more prestigious medals. Nations which competed with the games were France, Tennessee, Georgia, the Republic of China, the Korean Empire, and Italy.

AMERICAN CUP CANCELLED AGAIN. Columbus, Virginian Empire. The outbreak of a major war in North America has once again caused the leaders of the American Cup program to cancel the season. The full military drafts which have been declared in the chief nations of the events has caused the collapse of several of the best teams, and the outbreak of possible civil war in Virginia and the ongoing conflict in Canada have led to a rise in tensions along new borders. Many fear this could be the death knell of the American Cup, as propaganda has claimed that it would be the first casualty of a victorious communist takeover.

EUROPEAN CUP. Vienna, German Republic. The European Cup enjoyed a successful year as it began garnering some fans from across the Atlantic Ocean, who kept up with games and scoring through radio broadcasts. The Cup has been extending radio coverage of games, providing new outlets for fans of the sport of football to keep up with the ongoing seasons. This year, the season was hotly contested as more teams than ever proved themselves capable to the challenge with new line ups of players and organizations. The European Cup organization as a whole has nearly doubled in size, as the second wave of teams from the Russian Federation and its protectorates began to enter. The final game of the year came as one of these teams, the Tsarityn Football Club played against the Vienna Football Club. The Vienna team managed to win a victory on its home turf, winning the game with three points to Tsarityn’s two. The growth of the game has led some sports speculators in Europe to consider the separation of the current organization to accommodate the changes brought by Russia’s full entry into the game.

@milarqui: I’m sorry, but unless you have something specific that you can improve upon regular subs, I really see no purpose to your new design. “better weapons and armor” is great and all, but it’s not enough to justify the creation of an entirely new submarine unit. Whatever slight improvement it might have would not be worth my time or your effort to create.

@SoldierChild: The radio you described already exists, though it is only a recent development slowly spreading across the world. The 20 EP was put into Scientific research spending.

@Arsonist: if you’re looking for “high explosives” I’d recommend Army tech, not Scientific.

However, that is indeed what you have done to the Citizens of Persia whom live and work in this region. And so, Good Sirs, we come to it at last.
