A Catholic's rant

OK, I know this is strange, but this occurred last year:

Several acquaintances of mine at high school were talking religion and stuff at lunch. We were about to do something on the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent. So this girl, right, she usually does better than me at history, et al, she says that the Reformation was Christians against Catholics. I say to her, ‘Okay, Frances*, Catholics are as Christian as anyone else. The main common belief for any Christian is a belief in Christ’s divinity’ But she says, “No they’re not.” I say, “Well, you are talking to one, young lady, and he says he is Christian.” She then replies, “Well, you people worship Mary and the Pope.” I ask, “Who in creation told you such nonsense?” She responds, “My minister.”

Now, I found that hard to believe, since I know her minister is a rather intelligent man, having heard him speak of theology once. Myself, I think it’s her parents who fed her this wonderful information, which is so rather ironic, since they’re Mexican, and id’ estimate her grandparents were Catholic.

It really gets on my nerves when people can’t get the facts straight, and instead rely on the ignorant wonderful information spewed by their parents.

If you are at peace with your relationship with god, ask yourself why what other people think should be important. Do you think you can set the world straight somehow? Is it your job to try? Why?

Indeed. I've run across a few people who thought Catholics worshipped Saints, and Mary. It's rather bizarre, and sad, that the Church is divided so much.

She might not have gotten it from her parents either, it may be her own thoughts formed from her observations, people don't always have to "get it" from somewhere, they might have construed the thought themselves.

Example: When I was in Rome as a kid, me and my family went and visited St.Peter's and lots of other Catholic sites. I was left with a feeling that Catholics prayed to saints and worship Mary along with jesus, I was outraged (yes, even as a kid I had such strong feelings about faith), I thought Catholics to be heretical. Of course I didn't know the word heretical at the time, but the word describes what I thought they were.

Btw, I don't feel this way about Catholics now. Well, some few Catholics in 3rd world countries may worship Mary and have a sort of "pagan" take on Christianity, treating the saints as semi-gods and such.

I guess, Sahkuhnder, that I no longer give a damn. I'm just annoyed. Needless to say, the fact that we were learning about such issues makes it more of a jab at stupidity in general.

I here ya aussieboy. Sometimes we have to face anti-Catholic biases that these people have and instruct the ignorant. Sometimes instructng the ignorant can be tireing and draining, eventhough it is part of our virtues.

Feed the hungry
Clothe the naked
Shelter the homeless
Instruct the ignorant
(There are others that I have forgotten  )

To all: I can tell you a fact that Catholics do not worship Mary nor the Saints. We ask for their insercession for us (IE we ask them to pray on our behalf).

Given the amount of ignorant bs thrown by the Catholic church at others, I'm not about to feel sorry for it.

When I get some old git in Rome threatening my Prime Minister with eternal damnation if he choses to enact legislation which largely reflects the values of my country, I get annoyed too.

i was told this as well by my ministers. it doesn't really help when you invoke mary and various saints in prayers or deem the pope infailable either. :p

Evangelicals think that Catholicism is as good as idolatry, so it's no wonder she has this opinion.

Sometimes Evangelicals have a misguided view on Catholicism :-/.

A moment of self-reflection can be good for the soul. You don't like facing people biased against your beliefs, and consider those people "ignorant". Ask yourself, how many lifestyles and beliefs are you biased against? (I can find links if you would like...)

Do you think those people like it when they have to face your anti-XYZ bias? If you feel it is your duty to point out and/or condemn faults as you see them in others then you have forfeit your right to complain when it happens back in reverse to you.

If you wish to live your life in peace and let others live in peace then you can complain about the noise.

If you wish to live your life as a moral crusader pointing out the flaws in others then you should expect no sympathy when the same is directed at you.

Give the man a cookie...

to be fair, we also found Paul Cellucci's (the former US ambassador) meddling quite annoying. We're like that with external influence.

Often times people make ridiculous claims about Catholicism and Christianity in general because, well, quite frankly, they don't have any idea what they're talking about. But, they want to be right, so...
It's really quite a problem, considering I go to a Catholic High School and have only one or two atheists friends, whom happen to believe the same thing the girl in your story believes.

Edit: Removed, felt it holds no weight in this thread. Plus I felt that this thread is just asking for trouble so I am going to avoid it.

Indeed. The new guy seems alright though.

I am not going to post any further in this thread because thread is just asking for trouble and reeks of troll bait :(.

@ CivGeneral -

Honestly CG, come now. First you claim "I never seen a non-religious person in real life" and now you are going to stick with the "I'm not biased in any way or against anyone" story? (recently removed by you) Do you really need me to drag out all of your numerous posts that say otherwise? What does the bible say about not telling the truth?

P.S. - Why is it "just asking for trouble" or does it "reek of troll bait"? The Yankee has already viewed this thread and let it live. If there is some specific post you have a problem with then just report it as such. As an alternative there is no shame in admitting when you have misspoke.

The moral of this thread is...Not to discuss religion over lunch!

:)
