A confession: I am older than dirt and I have been a Civ Fanatic since Civ1. It has been my experience that each and every new Civ release has been an improvement over the one it replaced. It is disheartening to hear all the negative spam from people over a game (Civ5) that they have not even played.

For my part, I shall remain confident in my faith that Civ 5 will follow suit and give me many hours of enjoyment as all the other Civ releases have. I will remain assured that the brilliant community of modders will make further additions to enhance my already satisfactory gaming enjoyment. I will not be looking for ways or reasons to cancel my preorder. The money I spend on Civ is not enough to worry about when compared to the hours of enjoyment returned.

I have a friend I've known for 40 years and lives a good distance away. Some of our most cherished memories over a lifetime of friendship has been those nights we play Civ 4 together. We always ally against the computer and try to create some sort of themed scenerio for every new game we begin. His health has taken a turn for the worse lately but I do hope for the best. We are both looking forward to Civ 5 with great enthusiasm.

With Civ, there is so much more to consider than just dollars or pounds. There is community and life teeming all around the core game itself. And as for me...I will still look forward to the excitement I feel exploring an unknown continent...or seeing the first Spanish ship enter my harbor...or hearing the hostile sound of native drums in the distance.;)

I must admit, I am puzzled by all these people who goes completely bananas over the most trivial thing, and feel that the changing or removal of certain mechanics is a personal betrayal. But then again, perhaps the Internet exaggerates these emotions.

That's exactly how I feel. They've never let me down and I've little reason to expect otherwise, especially considering I enjoy the idea of each change that they've made.

I hope your friend gets better and the memories continue.

It's just few loud people, the vast majority is counting the days to Sep 24th (or 21st).

This.

Don't let the vocal negative ones get you down. Every game has its haters, and they are "gonna hate".

I have been playing Civilization constantly since Civ2 and have been playing most (not all) of Sid Meier's PC games since 1990. There is a lot of trust in Sid and the Civilization series but there two things that give pause: 1) in my opinion, Civ3 was not a good game and certainly not as good as its predecessor; and 2) there have been two noticeable "failures" recently - Pirates! (no replayability) and Railroads!. As I said in another thread, if Civ5 turns out to be so different of a civ game, then there's no reason not to keep and play Civ4 and Civ5. And if Civ5 turns out to be a clunker like Civ3, then there's always Civ4 to fall back on.

A very nice post Reacher52.I see you've only posted 17 times since 2003.I sure the other 16 was as high a quality as this one was.Don't be a stranger and do post more often :) Hope the health of your friend gets better.

Great thread and I agree. I have a lot of faith in Firaxis to deliver the goods. Everything looks amazing so far. Can't wait.

It's kind of amusing, sorta. People lose their mind over something they haven't even experienced. But it's not like life is lacking for extremists of various kinds. ;)

For sure, the changes feel pretty much perfect and it's nice to read/see/hear interviews with Shafer explaining things and have them make total sense.

I've followed so many games from development to Gold its embarrassing. One common thread in all communities is that a certain % always feel the game will be a miserable piece of crap. ALWAYS, and ESPECIALLY in games that are sequels. Since it can not be escaped, I just accept it as a fact of life. Its also why I don't post as much on pre-release forums.

Anyway... I share the same faith that Civ5 likely won't be a let down. Civ has had a very respectable 3 out of 4 releases. Civ3 is the lone exception, being so awful I generally pretend it didn't happen, which explains why I generally call Civ4 "Civ3" and will likely call Civ5 "Civ4".

Yeah, I'd say Civ3 was the exception--it really is the only "clunker" of the Civ series, and I say that with the caveat that had it been the ONLY civ game ever released, I'd probably be happily playing it and thinking it's awesome. And it did get improved quite a bit by the Conquests expansion.

Otherwise, Civ has been a reliably strong game series, and I see no reason as of yet to think otherwise of Civ 5.

I have "faith" that Civ5 will be an excellent game-& better than Civ4 in several respects (1upt being a fantastic example), but I am concerned that my overall Civ5 experience will not be as positive as it has been for Civ4, because I feel that they're removing too much of what made Civ4 such a great game!

Aussie.

We are truly brothers in this faith, amigo.

ciV will be a good game. Whether it will be great is another story altogether. Time will tell. Modders will fix most of the problems thankfully.
Still excited about the game coming out though. :)

Oh I've gotten so cynical, I thought the title of this thread reflected yet ANOTHER rant on the removal of religion of CiV. This is exactly how I feel about this upcoming sequel: I'm confident that the changes will reinvigorate the series and add some new strategies that weren't even possible in CivIV. Although it's somewhat ironic that you mentioned Spain (I don't believe it's going to be included in vanilla CiV...), I understand and don't expect every feature/civ that was in CivIV and all of its expansions to be included: the focus is on delivering new gameplay, not a glut of new features. 17 turns left!

Well I couldn't help it, here's post number 16:
I like playing Isabella of Spain...Hang out till your citidals come then combine theocracy, citidals and a barracks to create siege weapons with three city attack promotions right out of the gate. Very rarely do you lose one of those monsters when you assault an enemy's walls. Upgrade to conquistadors with cannons and see the defenses fall.

Isabella also being spiritual can change civics as needed to make her siege weapons or to go to war. ;)

Clearly, he really likes the Spanish Civ :)

I have to admid, I was about starting a thread complaining about all the silly complainers.. but mine wouldnt have been as positive minded and pure of heart as yours. So I just didnt do it because it wouldt stop it. So thank you Reacher52 for saying these words. Have a nice time with Civ5 :) Ohh, that last one is for everyone else, too :)
