Spoiler :

So I finally got my barbarian challenge. Note first that I overcrowded a Standard Map (Terra Incognita) with 38 City States, and the standard number of Civs all on the Old World. Even then the savages got to thrive with a few encampments, spawning like rabbits.

During the early game I had hoped to turn the odd Encampment and get a free Brute (who get an awesome bonus when attacking now!), but they kept a worthy challenge by always having a couple Warriors hanging around and constantly threatening my worker inside my dominion. Gladly I didn't lose any of my units (then neither did they get too experienced with Defense XP out), but even when I was fielding three armies I couldn't overrun those troglodytes.

Right after my first setback--losing a warrior--my breakthrough came with a Settler. I managed to use my remaining military to escort him over along the northern coast, and finally he got into the settling spot (and what a spot!) stacked with a bold warrior. But the barbarians had brought in an archer (while I was still building my first), and in a supporting fire flanking operation they broke my defending formation, capturing the settler!

Luckily, his own attacker was now too weakened to keep a tight hold on their newly acquired ransom, so my remaining warrior rescued the settling folks without a pinch. Passing the turn saw an insurmountable fear that they could try a desperate even odds attack at my last warrior, but by now they knew their place.

I settled Hamburg, a city born out of resistance against raging barbarians, and quickly bought lands of Marble and Sheep to keep the greedy Indians out, and the rest is history.

Mods used:
My own Savage Lands: Increased Barbarian Activity
rspeer's Terra Incognita mapscript
zappara's Historic City States
Solver's Hebrew Civilization
Dale's Hardwood strategic resource

p.s. Wish me luck on my 50% roll against the barbarian Encampment!

Please share how your perfect game played out as well! Let's make this a positive thread ;)

By the way, I'm playing on Emperor and was quite behind in score (around 30). Getting the second city brought me closer to my (cheating) peers.

i just play settler level (i know im a wussie), i hate the barbarians so i dont know why u would want more of them haha.
i tried to play on a higher level, but the barbs are too brutal and i HATE to lose, i get all upset and frustrated. i have horrible sportsmanship :)

Aw c'mon, barbs are such a treat ;)

Yeah, everyone has their playstyle, that's why mods are so great. Me, I love to see barbarians hanging out all about the map.

Try playing on a higher lever but turn off barbarians ("No Barbarians" in Advanced Setup), so you'll be getting better and better. You definitely need more of a military the higher the level, not only against barbs but to protect and even assert yourself against other civs.

Great stuff :) <3 Mods - personally I'm happy with the core game and am looking to mods to extend the experience with new features instead of balances and tweaks, but it's lovely to see the mood lifting as mods start to surface.

Absolutely, mate! It shouldn't take too long for most complainers to notice their solution is in the dark corner of these forums (C&C) I'm now working on a mod to add features to City States.
Keeping an eye on your hilarious AAR.

Try Chieftain or even Warlord for a bit more of a challenge, it's not too much different. You can turn off Barbarians in the advanced options during game setup, too. (I like em, though... every camp I find is effectively just a pile of gold waiting to be collected. What's not to love?) :goodjob:

well im playing napoleon right now and his warriors arnt that good. its taking me 4-5 turns to kill 1 single barb camp. is that normal with him?

I don't think his warriors are any different than anyone else's warriors (foregoing all attempts at lame jokes regarding the French here) - and on Settler, they should steamroll most barbarian camps, assuming those camps only have Brute units in them, not spearmen / archers / etc.

Terrain bonuses may play a part (attacking units on hills or in forest is tougher) and they're probably fortified for an additional defensive bonus, but sometimes you can bait them into leaving the camp to come and attack your own fortified warrior unit and beat them that way.
