Hi guys, long time no see! To get to the main point of the discussion I was in need of some advice from internationally minded people on the question of defecting to North Korea. (wait don't go away, I am being serious) To make a long story short a few months ago I was thinking of ways to get rich while doing little work when I read an article in Time about a soldier who defected during the Korean war and now is a movie star in North Korea (he only plays villains but apparently he is popular among the people) and I was wondering, would they do this for anybody. Like could I go to DPRK embassy and get a movie contract or would they tell me to screw off? Could someone who knows a bit about North Korea go over the possibilities with me?

Wait, wait, did you say defect to North Korea? :dubious:

Although it sounds weird, yes. It seems like I would be an important person there (or at least respected) and I think that such a life could work out very well for me. (and for the DPRK as well, we could easily work together for mutual benefit)

Why would they take an American in 2008?

I believe you are deluded if you think you can pull that off and succeed. I think your chances - and life - would actually be better if you simply moved to South Korea and tried your chance there.

But as in everything related to acting, it requires both luck and patience (not even mentioning talent :) )

Because their popular American actor is like seventy now and they need a new one. I imagine they could use me for propaganda purposes in some other ways too, though I am unsure what.

It could work , but first you'd have to join the US military and hope they start a war against North Korea, and then after defecting you can only hope that the USA doesn't win.

Meh... you'll never know 'till you try!

You wouldn't want to spend the rest of your life asking yourself "what if..." do you?

Good luck. :goodjob:

Thanks for the encouragement but I was more looking for concrete advice, like where an actual embassy or such would be, I don't think they have one in D.C.

I too want a glamorous film career in North Korea! And I know where the embassay is, and have already made contacts to meet at the border. Kim is awaiting my arrival this evening.

So long, sucker!

But I'm not sure North Korea has an embassy in the US... the US does not have one in NK.

If its the same guy i'm thinking about. I think i saw somewhere (60 minutues) that he was actually becomming quite ill because of too much smoking and drinking. If he hasnt called it the night already, i dont think its long before. So there should be an opening possistion there for you soon.

I was sort of wondering if there was something closer to the eastern seaboard though, I don't want to have to fly to Switzerland or China only to be told to give up and go home.

This is my favourite thread ever.

"He who will not risk, cannot win."

But anyway, you could call one of those embassies, or you could hit up their UN delegation in NYC.

Really though, if you are needing help with this sort of information gathering, I don't see how you'll make it in the rough-and-tumble NK movie biz.

I look good, act American, and am willing to live in North Korea as a NK citizen, one would think that would make me a hot commodity.
