I offer you the game General, the latest version 4.6 (freeware). This is a turn-based strategy with a strong AI. If you are a fan of strong games with simple rules, you will like it. We are waiting for you in online games!

This game is from the category of casual, was released in the early 2000s. It has a minimum of graphics, and relatively a lot of text. The rules are simple, but at the same time interesting.
The time of one game is 30-60 minutes, which makes it comfortable to play online.
The game has an extensive help explaining all the rules and nuances of the game.
There are several countries on the map, you are the head of one of them. Develop science and economics, train generals and create an invincible army. Lead your country to victory over the rest.
The rest of the countries are controlled by AI, each computer country also has a goal to win the game.
The winner is the one who captures the entire map.
Briefly about the rules of the game:
All countries get the same territory and population at the beginning. Several moves are all developing, and then they try to capture neighboring countries.
The economic model is very simple - the entire territory of the country is used for sowing grain. Of the grown crop, part is used again for sowing, part for sale and receiving money. The larger the territory, the bigger the harvest and the richer the country.
The scientific model contains 6 directions. The urban scientific level increases the population density - more people per unit area of the country. Demographic level increases population growth. The agricultural level affects the yield. The cost of grain sold is affected by the financial level. The strength and endurance of soldiers is affected by the military level. The effectiveness of scientists who study all this is influenced by the scientific level.
At the beginning, the population of the country consists only of peasants who sow the territory with grain. Population growth also goes to the peasants. And scientists and soldiers are already training from peasants (of course for money). The country essentially needs money for several purposes - hiring and maintaining scientists (for the development of science), hiring and maintaining soldiers (for the defense of the country and the seizure of territories), and hiring generals (soldiers are fighting under their leadership).
Generals you can pump to your liking, this is the main feature of the game.
The main factors of victory are a large and strong army, a high military level, and strong pumped generals.
It is possible to achieve this only with the comprehensive development of science, competent tactics and strategy.
Try to start playing on the smallest map for 5 countries. If you can win, move on to bigger maps. When you learn how to play, welcome to online fights.

Apologies for not replying sooner; somehow this didn't register in my Alerts.

I've given it a go and it's one of those "easy to learn, hard to master" games. It calls to mind a streamlined Age of Civilizations II with a cleaner UI. AI plays to win and you need to min-max your research or you'll fast lose to attrition. For a 5-MB package it's a deceptively deep time-sink.

My only major complaint is the auto-scrolling help text; it would be better if the player can peruse it at leisure.

Thanks for the feedback! The auto-scrolling help text is a short version of the help, its display can be disabled in the game settings. It is included in so that beginners can view it during the game. For in-depth acquaintance in the game menu, you can call the full help.
