A question: religious units

I'm pretty sure you don't need channeling I to cast spells. As far as I'm aware, the channeling promotions only exist to restrict spell levels, so that adepts can't use lv2 spells because they don't have Channeling II.

25% desert defense doesn't seem overpowered though, because desert already has a penalty. That would just allow it to be treated like normal terrain.

I'm guessing Varn gosam conquering the map is more to do with the 15xp out of the gate, than anything else.
 
Channeling I is a prereq for casting the level 1 spells, in addition for being a prereq for the first level spell sphere promotions. Channeling II and III are only prereqs for getting the higher level spell sphere promotions, and are not needed for actual casting.
 
Might be more than just the defense bonus in the overpowered column there...

Loyalty isn't particularly useful and forts still need to mature to get good. But combined with nomad and mobility one they were pretty good. But I still needed some higher teir units to take citys. Paladins, Teutorix, Valin and Sphener in this instance.

I am away from FFH atm, but does that mean Govannon gives channeling I too? so passive XP gain for all in that stack?
 
Yes, Govannon gives channeling 1, but no that does not mean free xp. Only units with the bFreeXp tag get xp from channeling promotions. That pretty much means that the only units that don't already have channeling I that would benefit from this would be disciples.
