A super friend declared war on me!

Hello!

What's that? It's completely illogical : a super friend of mine is declared me war! I gave him everything (ressources, technology, money), he's my best friend since the beginning, he feels "friendly" on me since the beginning. The others players were always in war with us and suddenly my best friend accepted a war pact with my opponents against me !

Completely illogical... why? and how could i change it, except selecting "always peace" option?

Thanks!

I had this same thing happen to me a few games back. I'm not really sure if Friendly or Pleased status with an AI player makes them not declare war like I thought it did.

It makes them LESS likely to declare war for sure, increases the chance for them to accept a request, and increases the chances they will vote for you at the UN. But I'm not sure if it goes beyond that. I'd be interested to hear from someone who has cracked open the game mechanics!

No AI will start planning for war with you while friendly some won't do this at pleased as well.
Now "start planning" is not the same as "declaring war" - i.e. once an AI decides to start planning a war it will send some units (build them first if necessary) your way and declare only when they reach your territory. This means that while the war plan is in effect it might take dozens of turns until it is actually executed. During this time the relations may change even to friendly but the war plan will not be stopped so you can see declarations of war by friendly AIs.
The OP more likely described a religious war caused by a vote in the Apostolic Palace - in this case all full members of the AP are forced to declare war on you no matter your relations and they might even have voted against it...

But does AI plans the war 150 turns? Or they have not redded out things each other.

 They should not continue the plan for 150 turns - I did see that once when an AI wanted to attack me (we where on the same continent) but due to suddenly closed borders with the neighbor in between it had no land routes so its army could not reach me - it never abandoned the war plan though (you can see that if attacking someone else is reddened out with the reason "we have enough on our hands right now" - which means they have a war plan in effect, either they are at war or are planning for one.
I am not sure what you mean with reddened out though.

The AP is the most likely culprit. However, another possibility is if you happened to have Vassals. When determining how much another Civ likes you, it averages you, your teammates and your Vassals together. So they might have been Friendly with you, but if you had a Vassal that they disliked, your "average" relationship value would have been lower - allowing them to declare war.

I tried again, saving the last year before my friend declared me war, reloading each time : nothing worked! He declared me war anything I do!

I even made peace with the opponent X, made a protection pact with my best friend, gaving him every resources i had, every technology, all the money : this time it gave something weird : my friend declared war on me, all my opponents declared me war in same time (yes! even the X opponent!), so my best friend declared war to everyone! What's that? Completely illogical too! I have only two negative points with him and 15 positive points! All the opponents hate my best friends!

It's a bug, I'm sure of that... But I installed the latest patch.

You replied so fast, thank to you all!

please upload a save then we'll have a look.
reloading won't help - if it is not an AP vote but a war plan by one AI it might be in effect for dozens of turns prior to the actual declaration and just reloading from a couple of turns prior to that won't do anything...
But more importantly we forgot:

I've seen AI abandoning war plans. I had a situation where a coastal city was about to be attacked by Huayana capac's largish SOD. I had 4 rifleman and 2 cavalry fortified in the city. Luckily one of my airships caught the incoming fleet during a 'routine recon' mission. It seemed like this was going to be a sneak attack. the fleet was about 2 or 3 turns away from landing on my shores. luckily for me I invented Assembly line one turn before the fleet would reach my shores. Naturally I upgraded the rifleman to infantry and the next turn, I see Capac's fleet outside my borders but they never declared war. They just went back. :)

This is pre 3.13.

Conclusion: AI is smart enough to change war plans midway.

I fully expect it this way (my experience was before Blake got his hands on the AI code in Warlords) - in BtS I have seen the AI much better in most ways...

Happened to me 2X. Pre-patch with Random Events on. Since the patch I can no longer play Vs. my friend with Random Events on. Since then, no attacks from +15 friends. My conclusion... Random event - quest for resource on another civs plot triggers your "friend" to declare war. Btw, I was attacked by a huge pre-preppared force.

here is the saved game

I'd like to be in peace with Zara Yacob all my life! ;o)

thanks!

ok it is indeed a resolution by the Apostolic Palace forcing everyone to war with you, curiously Catherine has enough votes herself to pass it forcing everyone else's hand.
The only way to get rid of this nuisance is to gift whomever owns the AP Mass Media to obsolete it
