a thought on terrain mods and overmodding

I'm not trying to hurt anyones feelings and i'm doing a crumby job of avoiding it. All that I'm saying is there has got to be some other picky people out there that make mods besides just me. Personaly i can't even play RAR and enjoy it, i wish i could! I go crazy and start deting units left and right and "tweaking" it to fix my tastes until i just get sick of modifying that and i make my own! I don't mod because i love it, its fun but i prefer playing good mods. But i couldn't find very many that i liked enough so i learned how to do it myself..

Your right, 3 months is not long, but its a good amount of time. I'm not done anyways.
 
You know what...my mod has plenty of new units and techs and stuff and I have re-done all the terrain graphics to make them smaller. I have no civilopedia entries for any of my units and my pediacons are resonable facimilies of the units they are suppose to represent. I just wish I had know I had made a bad mod before I had so much fun playing it. Maybe you could post yours when its done so I can go back to being bored with the lack of depth in the game...

I understand your point, kevincompton. But I also see that this thread is simply a waste of time. Sure, some units aren't all that great, and you don't like certain mods. But honestly, can't you complain about it in the RaR thread if at all? This is just a bash-fest. I think this should be moved to the off-topic forum, if still on the site at all. C&C isn't here for you to bash other people's works, it's here to talk about creations and customizations (hence the name). I'm sorry if your intent wasn't to insult anyone and I'm just a big jerk, but you had me at the profanities and the insulting of both CFC members and fantasy mods.

Go back and look at Dom Pedro II's 4:43 p.m. post. Notice his self-effacing humor; his ability to laugh at himself and to not take himself too seriously. We can all learn from that. :D

There is no "right" or "wrong" or "good" or "bad" in modding. Modding is about personal preferences. Personally, I'm looking forward to hearing more specifics about your mod, kevincompton. Overall, your modding ideas may not be my cup of tea, but I bet there will we one or two ideas that I may want to "borrow" and use myself. That's what I did with the Warhammer mod. I don't play the mod all that often, because fantasy is not my favorite thing, but I liked several of embryodead's ideas and incorporated them into the mod I am putting together for myself.

Exchanging ideas about a game we love ... no, that we are obscessed with ... is what this website is all about. At this website, it makes no difference how old you are, what color you are, where you live, or what your first language is. If you have an idea to share about Civ, you are welcomed here.

So, why don't we just put everything behind us and get back to the fun of sharing ideas on this game to which we all are addicted? Let's celebrate what we have in common and vigorously, but POLITELY, debate our differences. And we can leave all the ad hominems and name calling to the presidential candidates! (After all, they are much better at it than we are.). :)

I've modded too, and most people would probably hate the things I made, but I like it.
And when and if I would post it, it would only be to share it, not to make sure that other people will like it.

Aaglo, what bad graphics? Your ships are what make my scenario worth the effort to create.

As for those of you I've upset. I'm sorry your upset but I will not apoligize for making this thread or what I'v stated. This is not a bash, its a contreversial opinion up for anyone to react however they like. I just thought i'd share my tastes in a mod to see if enyone thinks like me or disagrees and what would be said. Debate is what makes things diverse, holding ones views.

I agree. I don't like overdone mods with units that are not perfect, therefore i mod the way i like by not putting in the kitchen sink as a form of artillery. I've seen a possum on one site as a unit to add, I kid you not.

I'm not complaining or saying everyone sucks. All that I'm saying is "I like mods so...heres why..." "I do not likes mods so...heres why.."

I started modding because the mods did not meet my tastes. So I make mods to meet my tastes. I don't demand anything of anyone. All I ask is the question "who sees it like i do?" "If you don't agree, why?"

I cussed no one out i have given nothing but respect so accusing me falsely is absolutely dispicable Odintheking. Does this come from an anger that i don't like fantasy mods? Check your attitude at the door of this thread. Embryodead has done all he could to inslut me and ad homenum. If it were not for the filter his words would have shown up!

Was his reaction appropriate?
Is Odinthekings accusations appropriate? I think not.
 
i hope that, for your sake, your scenarios don't have bugs/glitches, whathaveyou.

also, there's no need for overly-negative commentary regarding other cfc'ers works. it's simply not necessary. if you don't like it, don't use it/play it. constructive critiscism is one thing but bashing is something different altogether.

i sympathize for all of those that you singled out. it's completely unfair.
 
El Justo, show some Justo. I'm not singling anyone out. This is constructive criticism if you take it that way. Count on my scenario having glitches, even firaxis has glitches. I'm not boasting perfection nor am i requiring it of anyone else. I'm simply... you know Eljusto? Read before you talk. My last post says it all and i won't repeat myself for your sake.
 
Could someone tell me why you would want to make a mod that makes the game worse? Its always a risk when modding, in fact i would venture that 95% of all mods and scenarios created and posted on this site are overdone and not tasteful...

...RAR at least did not use terrain graphics, but a good mod is not *dumping* every unit graphic ever made into some Civ stew....

And this is not a direct attack on me personaly? Wheres the moderator action here? I have been harrassed by the moderators about my sig about posting in the wrong forum by mistake over and over. I have completely complied in the past but this is clearly discriminatory. Embryodead began with the lude comments.

Count on mine being boring for your tastes. I wish there was another creator that would post "oh heres my mod, its like what your describing" But no i get a bunch of fantasy enthusiests that insult me and then get the moderator to warn me.

Gaudy: Showy in a tasteless or vulgar way.
 
I think it's not an attack towards you personally. It seems more like a statement towards the idea of this thread generally.

Kevin, just remember, that nobody's a master right from the start. Jeebus, just look at my earlier units. They're far from being 'good enough'. But still I posted them, because they were good enough for me then.

I see nothing wrong in overmodding. In fact I think it's fun to see how far from original civ3 some modders can get :)
 
Its my opinion. I'm not insulting you because i didn't say your gaudy. I said "people like gaudy mods." I can think that if i like. Now i'm done arguing with you. If anyone wants to post regarding what i have SPECIFIED IN THE FIRST POST(you have a mod, working on a mod that fits the description i requested), then be my guest. Otherwise consider it off topic and i won't respond.
