Game 1 Session 25 T256 1110AD - Can Rome be Saved?
This run was a double mulligan. The first one we were trying to take a picture and hit Windows instead of Function and this version of Windows does not like it when we tab out of Civ 4 and we have not figured out how to keep it running. The rest was downhill, fixing micro and then making a final effort to save Rome.
We can call the last part cheating or we can call it lessons or we can call it a gambit.
This session is only 4 Turns, but full of action.
T253 We spotted the French stack of 10 units right at the gates of Rome.
We also spotted the German stack from the opposite direction we were expecting.
The Russians build one stack per turn. They still have 10 Cities. Based on the picture, we have 22 Cities arrayed against our 32. It is probably more like 24 Cities. We are not sure if there is a display bug for the Vassals. It might be safe to assume we have the entire world stacked against us.
T254 Some Knights arrived at Zara. So there is a better chance Zara is saved. The big question is if we can save Rome.
T255 We captured Lagos and 3 Mali Workers.
There was a German stack of 12 that was in a forest, but really only defended by a single Spear. We managed to wipe it.
There was also the French stack threatening. We had odds on the first defender and we had more attackers than defenders. So we attacked and along with the counterattack, it was bloody.
T256 Izzy made peace with Khan. We can guess who she is plotting against. She has had troops on our border for a very long time.
We finished off the French stack. Then we forgot to take a picture of our nearly wide open fronts.

Here is the Russian Front. They build a new stack every turn.
Here is the soft underbelly.
Here is what is left of the Niger River. The display says 2, but we believe they have 3 cities left.
It was short round, but it was huge for us. We captured another city. We destroyed 2 stacks. And we appear to be up 3 units.
We might be able to get off the defensive. However, we also have a feeling that Izzy is going to attack.
We are dealing with the nightmare of a two front war in Europe and we might do well to consider some variation of the Schlieffen Plan. We will delay as long as we can, then drop a 10 Turn Truce on Russia and focus on Europe.
Another plan we picked up on by looking ahead is to sign a truce with Fred and make Cathy capitulate. I am not sure how to get that information out of BUG. When we talk to her, she will not capitulate because she is afraid of our enemies. This might be the information we are looking for.
My preference is the Schlieffen plan, especially since Rome looks more secure.
As an aside, going back to the bold counterattack on the French Stack against Rome, our backup plan was to dump peace on Fred if the counterattack failed and that would have saved Rome as well.
Turns are starting to take a very long time, especially when we lose a session like we did the first time. We might have to give up a bit on micromanagement. Or we can save for a longer Session.
