A Tribute to the 20th Anniversary of Civilization 4 - A Casual Player's Tour of Earth 18

Not sure where i saw Asia. Europe has the best cities. You can settle Africa but I would rather have a captured European capital.

You are waiting for a huge AI stack that is not coming. Your power ratio to China is 1.7. They likely have no stack. Take the 155 gold with 10 turns peace.

Not sure why you have 30-40 units just sitting in 2 cities doing nothing. Delete or use them.

The game is pretty much won really in terms of cities you have. Russia may have 12 cities but many are junk. You can pretty much take down 3-4 AI with catapults and phants.

If you are saying either delete them or use them, then you really believe the game is won!

Next post is incoming, but it might be a bit incoherent.

Game 1 Session 17 T205 475AD - Alexander's End

In the previous Session, we made peace with Rome, France, and China and started a war with Greece, but our report included none of the details and lost all of the notes. Here is where we busted into Anatolia.
Spoiler :

T192 Anatolia.JPG

We estimate 13 Turns to Engineering and we have been running our turn sets based on either technology or major events.

T198 China built the Mausoleum. I suppose this is fitting. It must be the Mausoleum dedicated to their first Emperor.
T199 We captured Byzantium and renamed it Istanbul. Truly fitting, it was very well defended and cost us 6 units to take.
RIP Catapults 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. RIP Axe 15 who lost a 99.4% battle.
Spoiler :

T199 Byzantium.JPG

T202 RIP Galley 1. While under siege, Athens build another Galley to take out ours. Fortunately we landed two Catapults and did the damage.
T202 Louis built the Great Library.

T204 France and Mongolia went to war with Spain. England went to war with China.

We estimate 7 Turns to Feudalism.

T205 We completed the Siege of Athens. Alexander is no more.
Spoiler :
T205 Athens.JPG

It is too bad in a way, in that this map belongs to Alexander. We shall see when we get around to playing him.

Athens came with a Great Priest, Great General and the Parthenon. For some reason, we did not record it when it was built, most likely in the last Session.

Here is our status:
20 Cities
18 Workers
1/2 Scouts
4/6 Warriors
20 Archers
12/17 War Chariots. They are still proving relevant even at this late date.
4/6 War Elephants
12/23 Catapults. So far we count 11 lost. 877 hammers to take out the Greeks. Worth it? The Romans will be even more expensive.
1/2 Galleys
2 Triremes
1 Great General. Noobechanezar did not live long. Maybe Belisaurus will do better.

Body count:
76 Warriors
40 Archers
13 Axes
11 Chariots
7 Swords
7 Spears
4 Phalanx
3 Galleys
2 Scouts

Rome has access to Longbows and taking them out will be a lot more costly. Since we took the noob play on Feudalism before Civil Service, we are about 20 Turns away from Maces. We have not yet decided if we will upgrade our Axes. We might have to, since Rome will have their Legions and Longbows. Maybe we should try beating Feudalism out of Rome.

Here is the ecological disaster forming in the Congo. We have started.

T212 Music 60x27 = 1620. We got the Great Artist we were looking for.

T212 we captured Zara in another expensive battle. It took 6 Catapults, because they had 14 units stationed, including 4 Longbows.
Spoiler :

T212 Zara.JPG

Here is what we are up against for the rest of Rome.
Spoiler :

T212 Rome.JPG

We will lose the battle for the Mediterranean. We hid our Trireme. This means we will lose our Fishing Boats and will have to rebuild them. Compared to 6 Catapults, 1 Axe, 1 Archer to capture Zara, this is a minor addition to the cost.

Here is our status:

The Fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453 marks the end of the Medieval Era to me. In this game, we are very early compared to this date.

The Romans are putting up a fight with a couple of surprise legions and a blockade of the entire Eastern Mediterranean with 6 Triremes.

T213 The Romans showed up at Istanbul and we had to retreat some units to deal with the incursion.
T214 China built Chichen Itza. On the positive side, China is not Russia.

Game 1 Session 21 T236 910AD - The Russians Attack!

We put two sessions together.

T224 Catherine declared a war against us! We are now fighting Russia for Europe, Roman Carthage and Mali for Africa.
We spotted a single Horse Archer and a Chariot approaching Istanbul and a stack of 3 over the Caucasus.

T226 Rome and Spain declare a peace so they can focus on us more.
RIP Mace 2, carelessly left in the open after a close fight with an Axe.

T227 Rome vassaled to Russia, making the alliance against us official.
RIP Archer 9, promoted to Longbow, lost a 92% battle.
We found Russian stacks, totaling about 8 units.

T228 We won another naval battle in the Mediterranean. Now the Carthaginians only have 2 Triremes left to block us.
We spawned Khalid in Muscat. Carthage is defended with 4 units. We came with too few units and this will be a disaster.

T230 India Mongolia War. We voted to stop trading with Roman Carthage.
Carthage is now defended with 5 units.

T231 We won yet another victory in the Mediterranean and we have taken control from the Roman Carthaginians.

T233 Catherine declared war on Asoka. It also turns out she can also build War Elephants.
War Elephants do not have much of a counter. We believe we have an advantage in numbers.
Carthage now has 6 units.

T234 Isabella built Kashi. This saves us the trouble of building a shrine.
T235 Louis built Hagia Sophia. This saves us more trouble.
We sieged down Kaffa. Is it bad luck to say we sieged Kaffa?

Mansa is a distraction. His starting land was horrible. I would of taken out the French (Mids and Glib) and Spanish. You need a lot more units to do any real harm to the Russians.

At some point you just need to move to cuirs or rifles and start teching.

You could really use an island city for 2c trade routes. Merc is killing you commerce wise.

On 27 cities pretty hard to lose this with such a huge tech advantage here.

Mansa - I was going to leave him alone for longer. Then he peace vassal to Russia and Russia started a war with us. Most likely, he is only producing a few units. The distraction was sending one to southern Africa which is completely undefended and having to scramble to get units there. Combined with Carthage, this was more of a nuisance. I suppose we could have increased the size of the garrison a bit and deal with units as they came along.

French and Spanish - Russia declared war just as we finished off Italian Rome. The decision I made at the time was to move units to invade from Istanbul and leave the Axes behind in case the French or Spanish decide to start a war.

Russia's Never Ending Divisions - Well we are two cities into the invasion and they appear to be throwing everything they have at it. They also have Elephants. It is possible they were getting them from Carthaginian Rome, which is no more, and Mansa, who renounced them. I wish I kept a more detailed count of units destroyed. Maybe we can focus espionage and look for a strength advantage.

Madagascar Cities - The invasion of Greece and Rome slowed down the development of Africa.

Mercantilism - It has been a couple years since I played and I forgot about that detail. I was wondering why the economy tanked. We made the change 4 Turns ago.

Game 1 Session 23 T246 1010AD - Fall of Moscow

Well we are not the Mongols and it is not the year 1237. We missed by a couple hundred years.

T241 we got our opportunity to switch out of Mercantalism.
20% +12, +154 = 166 Slavery-Mercantalism

On the positive side, we have not seen any Elephants in a while. This is good, because we really have no counter to them. Pikes might have a slight edge, but they will lose to Maces. Speaking of, we have not been seeing those from Catherine.

As another positive, the two fronts should get easier. After we clean up the Africa front, the Barbarians will show themselves again, with Medieval technology this time.

Here is our status:

You adopted a different religion no one has. Instant -1 to -3 Diplo hit with most ai. Albeit looking at the game it probably hardly matters with all other negative diplo hits. +5-6 from religion can really healp over time. Same for shared resources.

I would take capitulation from Mansa.

Settle 2-3 island cities.

CR2 for trebs.Would of been better. The issue is time getting units to Russia on such a big map. This is why you want Cuirs. Russia will take peace. Albeit I'd want the city west of Moscow to stop culture pressure.

Mass capitulation here is the quick win. Albeit with Americas not touched that could take a while if you don't meet land area.

Game 1 Session 22 T252 1070AD - Germany Joins the War

We probably should have taken the capitulation and work on a faster win.

T247 Germans and Mongols make a peace. France vassal to Germany.
T249 RIP 3 Maces. We traded 2 for a Longbow and 1 for a Crossbow. Not a great round.
T250 RIP Elephant, traded for a Chariot and a Sword. RIP Trireme, taken out by Mansa's Caravel. We no longer have a naval advantage.

T251 Captured Gao and Mansa is down to 4 Cities. We know where 2 of them are and have a good idea on the other one.
We should check if we have enough units to finish this, because he will slowly get stronger if we are not reinforcing.
We also captured St. Petersburg. We had brutal luck on RNG. We lost 3 consecutive battles at 76% and one at 99.5%. At least we did not lose our General.

Russia. Germany. France. Mali. Most likely no special units are involved. Mali still has access to Elephants. They also vassal to Germany. So Germany will have access to Elephants, for a while. Russia might still have access to Elephants, because Siberia is such a big place. There might be trade from India.

For Domination Victory, we are looking at:
28/41% Population
14/51% Area
To obtain it, we will have to fight the land war in Asia. We can take prisoners if we want, but we only claim half of their land area.

For Religious Victory, we are looking at:
6 Conversions among our Enemies. I forgot to list them.
3 Conversion in the New World.
To get to the New World, we will have to obtain Optics and send Missionaries to the New World.

We are not moving in this direction right now. We are currently researching Printing Press for the economic boost. We are likely to research Education, then Nationalism. This should keep us busy for about 30 Turns. We still have not gone Gunpowder, Military Tradition.

Here is a look at our distraction Mali Front. By the time we get there, there should be 5 or 6 units. We believe this is their source of Elephants.
Spoiler :
T252 Mali.JPG

ADDIT - Looking at this map, Mali land is indeed terrible. I thought the Niger River included a Flood Plains Gold Mine!

The Russian front is still vast. We have visibility into a lot of their cities, but have no idea where they relocated their capital.

The appear willing to settle a 10-turn truce if we want it. That would give us a lot of focus against Germany.

ADDIT 2 - Looking at the technology, We have Paper and Banking and the Mali have Optics. It is strange the other Civilizations are so many more techs behind. While we were pursuing this war with Mali, why were they not arming our foes? We should be dealing with a technology deficit.

Game 1 Session 25 T256 1110AD - Can Rome be Saved?

This run was a double mulligan. The first one we were trying to take a picture and hit Windows instead of Function and this version of Windows does not like it when we tab out of Civ 4 and we have not figured out how to keep it running. The rest was downhill, fixing micro and then making a final effort to save Rome.

We can call the last part cheating or we can call it lessons or we can call it a gambit.

This session is only 4 Turns, but full of action.

T253 We spotted the French stack of 10 units right at the gates of Rome.
Spoiler :

T253 French.JPG

We also spotted the German stack from the opposite direction we were expecting.
Spoiler :

T253 German.JPG

The Russians build one stack per turn. They still have 10 Cities. Based on the picture, we have 22 Cities arrayed against our 32. It is probably more like 24 Cities. We are not sure if there is a display bug for the Vassals. It might be safe to assume we have the entire world stacked against us.

T254 Some Knights arrived at Zara. So there is a better chance Zara is saved. The big question is if we can save Rome.

T255 We captured Lagos and 3 Mali Workers.
Spoiler :

T255 Lagos.JPG

There was a German stack of 12 that was in a forest, but really only defended by a single Spear. We managed to wipe it.
There was also the French stack threatening. We had odds on the first defender and we had more attackers than defenders. So we attacked and along with the counterattack, it was bloody.

T256 Izzy made peace with Khan. We can guess who she is plotting against. She has had troops on our border for a very long time.
We finished off the French stack. Then we forgot to take a picture of our nearly wide open fronts.

Here is what is left of the Niger River. The display says 2, but we believe they have 3 cities left.
Spoiler :

T256 Nigeria.JPG

It was short round, but it was huge for us. We captured another city. We destroyed 2 stacks. And we appear to be up 3 units.

We might be able to get off the defensive. However, we also have a feeling that Izzy is going to attack.

We are dealing with the nightmare of a two front war in Europe and we might do well to consider some variation of the Schlieffen Plan. We will delay as long as we can, then drop a 10 Turn Truce on Russia and focus on Europe.

Another plan we picked up on by looking ahead is to sign a truce with Fred and make Cathy capitulate. I am not sure how to get that information out of BUG. When we talk to her, she will not capitulate because she is afraid of our enemies. This might be the information we are looking for.

My preference is the Schlieffen plan, especially since Rome looks more secure.

As an aside, going back to the bold counterattack on the French Stack against Rome, our backup plan was to dump peace on Fred if the counterattack failed and that would have saved Rome as well.

Turns are starting to take a very long time, especially when we lose a session like we did the first time. We might have to give up a bit on micromanagement. Or we can save for a longer Session.

Game 1 Session 26 T1266 1210AD - The Reverse Polish Schlieffen Plan

We are fighting Germany's Nightmare in Europe - a war with two distant fronts. To the east we have the Russians. We are also expecting the Chinese to attack. To the west, we have France and Germany.

We named our plan the Schlieffen Plan, because it resembles the Schlieffen Plan. We will direct our attacks westward, expecting the Russians to take longer to mobilize for an attack. We will attempt to push France out of the war and that will give us the energy to push eastwards.

We called it the Reverse Schlieffen Plan because we are reversing this plan on the Germans. We called it Polish, because our position to the east of Germany resembles Poland. Also around this time, Poland was a very powerful country. We also called it the Reverse Polish plan after my calculator, which is Reverse Polish.

T257 England built Notre Dame. All cities on the Isle of Britain will have a +2 happiness bonus. We were hoping this would get built on the main continent. We are also losing hope in the prospect of an extra long Golden Age from the Mausoleum, which is deep in Chinese territory and our current plan is to run two consecutive Golden Ages.

T258 Somebody founded Taoism. It was most likely the English, because they have the technology.
We wiped out another stack and spawned the other Monty in this game.
We captured Freetown. Mali is down to two cities.

T261 We captured Riga. This appears to be the other German stack.
Spoiler :

T261 Riga.JPG

T262 We captured Dakhla. This is such a junk city, we will not bother to post a picture of it.
T264 we captured Berlin.
Spoiler :

T265 The French unloaded a disaster on our advancing troops as we left a single pathway open for their Horse Archers to hit our Siege.
T266 We also captured Paris.

We estimate T272 for Nationalism.

T266 Finally, we captured Douala, the last Mali stronghold. This is a big threat eliminated that we could and should have eliminated about 20 turns ago.
Spoiler :
T266 Douala.JPG

We now have a bunch of Divisions we can move back to the eastern front. The Russians have been fairly quiet, but the Chinese have a massive stack nearby. There are more units than we can count. We have lots of Knights and those should be able to do quite a bit of damage to Catapults.
Spoiler :
T266 Chinese.JPG

We might be two turns from Nationalism and we would like to build the Taj Mahal and start a Golden Age. Most likely, our plan will be:
1. Take out Spain while we have the chance and that will complete the claim on Continental Europe.
2. Settle out the war with Germany and Russia.
3. Pop one more Great Person. Scientist. Merchant. We do not care.
4. Pop a Golden Age.
5. Build the Taj Mahal. Extend the Golden Age.
6. Continue the wars after the two Golden Ages.

We should also check on who we can vassal.

We also have the Pyramids. If we are still on the war path, then we should go Police State. If we are settling peace, then we should go republic. Is Democracy worth it yet?

Game 1 Session 28 T289 1345AD - The Race to the Taj Mahal

We actually looked ahead and made sure that we could do it. It was actually tense. Based on this run, we were ahead by two turns with all of our modifications. The Chinese were researching Nationalism on Turn 292 and building the Taj on Turn 291. For the next time, we will be starting sooner and not cutting it so darned close.

The Political Situation:
6/18 Dead Empires
Persia
Arabia
Greece
Rome
Songhai
Spain

3/18 Chijamong Conglomerate
China
Japan
Mongolia

3/18 Aztec America Inc
Aztec
USA
Inca

3/18 Unaligned - We intend to change this.
Germany
India
England

3/18 Us
Egypt
Russia
France

We have a Golden Age to navigate and a Taj Mahal Race to win. We made some modifications in Aden and got it from 77 production to 85. We topped out at 90 by changing the Sheep to a mine. We reintroduced Mercantilism.

T280 We declared war on Germany, because we had a bunch of units on the border and I was tired of pressing space again and again. Normally, we would not declare war during a Golden Age, because we are often busy building infrastructure.

T282 We also had a bunch of bored units on the Indian border and declared war on them as well.
Spoiler :

T282 India War.JPG

India had a Galley heading towards or Taj Mahal defended by a single Warrior. This would have been a very embarrassing mulligan. However, we had very good reason to believe they were not carrying units. That Galley started inside our territory and got kicked out when we declared war.
Spoiler :
T283 Mulligan.JPG

T284 We got another General and we captured Helsinki. We lost 6 units, but got Germany to capitulate.
Spoiler :

T285 One city was enough to get India to capitulate and join the winning side of the upcoming war.

T287 We managed to get a Great Engineer! Depending how long the game lasts, we will save for Mining Incorporated.
We spread Islam into England.

We have another 10 Turns of Golden Age and I prefer to build a bunch of infrastructure with it. We also have 33 Cuirassiers, which seems like a healthy quantity. If we can find a safe road to travel, then we can run across the continent and attack the Chinese. Here is what their land looks like. I forgot to mouse over where I think their stack is. Last time we saw it was about 20 turns ago and it was pretty terrifying.
Spoiler :

T289 China.JPG

Our options are the Silk Road or the South Road. Or both. They will choose one of them for their stack.

We are also making some attempt at the religious road. Our list is:
China - Check.
India - Check.
England - Check.
Germany - Missionary on the way.
Russia - We can easily send a Missionary.
Mongolia - We have Open Borders.
France - We can easily send a Missionary.
Mexica - We can put one on a boat.
Murrica - Same.
Inca - Same.
Japan - This is a question. Can we sneak a Missionary into their waters? Or do we have to do it the old fashioned way?

Game 1 Session 30 T308 1440AD - Blunting the Spear

Knowing a big stack was incoming, we pulled back from Beijing and they redirected southwards to Uzbek. This was not as strongly garrisoned and they recaptured. We got some bad dice, losing 3 75% battles with our Cavalry. We also did quite a bit of damage.

For some reason, we are spamming buildings while fighting a major war instead of building units. We might be at a critical power level.

No save on latest bit. Your 19% short on land so you need about 25 cities. So take out China and capture whatever you can.. Settle all the tundra and desert. That could give 8-10 cities. Consider razing and resettling cities to speed up the end game/

Consider settling South America too and that might get you over the line. If Aztecs have vassals it will take forver for him to cap. There is land south of India/Persia too?

No point taking capitulation with China as you need the land.

I have no idea why you are spamming buildings. Beyond land percentage the game is won.

Not sure what value each 10 turn updates offers here.

Forgot to include the save. I worked out about 500 Tiles. How did you get 19%?

Aztecs have vassals. I called them Aztec America Inc.

The turns take that long to execute now, about 30 minutes.
